0:00 so let's get this out of the way first what this video is not is a
0:04 comprehensive review of Steam OS what this video is is my Impressions from
0:10 having used the Alienware steam machine which was provided free of charge by
0:13 Dell as a gaming console for the last little while so expect a mishmash of my
0:19 thoughts on both the hardware and the software and what they add up to in
0:24 terms of the user experience
0:35 fresh books is the super simple invoicing solution that lets you get
0:39 organized save time and get paid faster
0:42 check out the link in the video description to try it for free let's
0:46 start with the hardware there are going to be no surprises here if you've been following Steam OS through its long and
0:51 arduous birthing process over the last two years because this is pretty much
0:56 the same piece of kit that Alienware first unveiled as a living room console
1:00 running Steam OS almost 2 years ago then
1:04 when it became apparent that valves Steam OS and steam controller teams were
1:07 operating on oh I don't know say valve Time released a few months later as the
1:12 Alienware Alpha running Windows with a living room friendly game launching UI
1:17 and an Xbox 360 controller to presumably to recoup some of the hardware
1:22 engineering costs that went into it so
1:25 yeah it's got somewhat dated but actually not totally incapable hardware
1:29 for cas ual games and even older AAA titles like BioShock Infinite at low to
1:33 medium settings my model is equipped with a haswell-based core I3 dual core 8
1:38 gigs of RAM a 1 TB hard drive and an 860m 2 gig is equivalent custom Maxwell
1:44 based GPU Alienware is touting the steam machine as upgradeable like a PC as well
1:50 but I'd say that's a little misleading you can add RAM and a larger drive or
1:54 SSD but the motherboard and video card are both non-standard so if you bought a
1:59 Mac out config today there would be no upgrade path with the graphics card
2:04 being the biggest concern here since it's the same all the way from the 449
2:08 price point to the 749 price point not
2:11 the way that stepup options usually are handled on a gaming machine but a
2:16 necessary limitation with this kind of Highly customized form factor on that
2:21 note I'd say industrial design-wise Alienware did a really great job it's
2:26 not as small as an NVIDIA Shield Android TV or anything like that but the overall
2:30 look is very subtle and if it wasn't for the glossy plastic I'd be giving full
2:33 marks here the black housing features a couple USB 3.0 ports an alien head
2:39 shaped power button and Steam logo on the front the color of these backlights
2:43 by the way can be changed or disabled altogether around the back you'll find
2:46 the power input HDMI 1.4 output HDMI
2:50 input note though that this is a pass through only not a capture card an
2:55 optical audio output note also that there is no analog audio output a bit of
2:59 a head scratcher a land port and two more USB ports this time of the 2.0
3:04 speed variety a fifth USB port is on the
3:07 inside for the wireless receiver that supports up to four steam controllers
3:12 the unit is quieter than a spinning optical drive at idle and underload when
3:17 oh I don't know you might be playing a game say for example with sound it was
3:21 significantly louder than that but in audible over the background music and
3:25 ambient sounds of any but the quietest games like limbo speaking of games in
3:30 addition to the console you'll get a couple of games in the Box as well as a
3:34 steam controller although I'm going to leave the long-term use functionality
3:39 focused review of this puppy to Luke who is working on that right now in the
3:44 meantime let's get into my experience using Steam OS when you run the initial
3:50 setup you are prompted to connect to a network uh prompted to run some updates
3:55 if applicable and then to create or log into an existing steam account text
4:00 entry with the touchpads is actually pretty clever but my account name has an
4:04 underscore in it so I actually had to go get a keyboard to plug in to log in
4:10 because the onscreen keyboard has two tities for some reason and no underscore
4:15 strike one then at the home screen my controller started tweaking out with the
4:19 vibration motor going crazy and overriding my keyboard and mouse inputs
4:23 so I actually had to hard reset the system and then finally upon reboot I
4:27 was prompted to update the controller firmware which fixed the issue so far
4:32 not a great experience strike two next I headed to my library to download some
4:37 Linux compatible games where I was surprised by a couple of things number
4:42 one while the game count that valve
4:45 keeps throwing around is utterly meaningless I mean there were over
4:48 10,000 total PlayStation 2 games but come on how many of them were worth
4:52 playing there are some pretty decent
4:55 indie games like Super Meat Boy and papers please and while mostly somewhat
5:00 dated way more AAA grade games than I
5:03 expected like BioShock Infinite Borderlands 2 and Borderlands the
5:07 Pre-Sequel Witcher 2 civilization 5 and Metro last Light that run on Linux the
5:12 valve titles that are supported we can kind of take for granted here but those
5:16 are good too but the thing that really stands out is that third-party developer
5:19 support for Linux has improved in the last two years to the point where if you
5:24 bought a steam machine just for playing native games it would be pretty hard to
5:28 get bored and speaking of things that are hard browsing and buying games I
5:34 searched valiantly in the store for a Steam OS compatible tag until finally
5:38 near the bottom I was like Hallelujah steam machine tag only to realize that
5:43 that tag is to buy a steam machine come
5:46 on valve here's a request for this feature from five years ago instead of
5:52 being able to just see all the Linux games in one place I have to check every
5:56 product page individually and look for the small little OS support icon and
6:01 then buy it and the worst part is that nothing in the checkout process prevents
6:06 a newcomer who doesn't know about this from buying incompatible games I mean I
6:12 I know that steam allows refunds now but preventing issues like this is a lot
6:17 better than fixing them after the fact strike three once I got gaming though
6:22 things got a little smoother again for Native games launching them is Fast and
6:27 the performance is fine as long as you don't over estimate the capabilities of
6:30 your hardware and you account for the constantly shrinking but still
6:34 significant Linux performance penalty and there's more good news for the games
6:38 that are not Linux compatible if you have a capable Windows gaming box
6:42 Elsewhere on the house logged into the same Steam account and your home network
6:46 performs very well the Steam OS interface allows those games to not only
6:50 be run remotely using steam and home streaming but also even installed
6:55 remotely and usually as long as you don't have a UAC popup to deal with or
6:59 something like that without ever actually getting off your butt and
7:03 putting down your steam controller and going and looking at that
7:07 computer but lonus hold on a minute if I wanted to stream games over my local
7:11 network steamlink can do that for 50 bucks why am I spending 500 plus dollars
7:16 on a full PC for this exactly great
7:20 question and I wish the answer was something like well it's got all these
7:24 other great capabilities but it doesn't
7:27 and to address the Linux Army that is undoubtedly charging to the comments to
7:31 inform me that there's a checkbox to enable the desktop Linux experience so
7:34 you can sudo it up I know but I don't
7:39 care that's completely irrelevant to the target audience for this product the
7:43 audience that isn't already just running a normal steam client on Linux for even
7:49 better customizability the audience for whom overscan settings are apparently
7:53 called resolution the console audience I
7:58 mean for people who just want to veg on the couch in front of their gaming box
8:03 honestly I think even issues like the default Gamepad mapping for Tomb Raider
8:08 being an unusable disaster that required me to go Source One of the thankfully
8:13 surprisingly usable Community created ones are going to be a
8:18 showstopper and these people really don't want to hear that they're going to
8:23 need an external capture PC to stream to
8:26 Twitch and that this alleged game console doesn't support all but
8:31 ubiquitous features like being able to Netflix and chill or well okay arguably
8:36 actually watching movies is not a prerequisite for that so I guess you're
8:40 good there but but when it but what it can't do without an add-on app purchase
8:45 or the requisite Linux ninja training is just playing Netflix or Hulu or stream
8:51 most content in general while YouTube thankfully works the built-in browser
8:55 makes it a frankly fairly rubbish experience in if I did want to watch a
9:00 YouTube video I would expect pressing the steam button on the controller would
9:04 indicate that I would like to mute that video and switch to another task now but
9:08 no it just keeps playing in the background and that's just one of the
9:13 many annoying things about the
9:16 experience hopefully more tightly integrated native apps arrive in the
9:20 future to make the experience more complete but I have a hard time seeing
9:25 where developer support is going to come from unless valve can figure out how to
9:29 sell some consoles which at this point I
9:33 think is just plain not going to happen
9:36 because right now a steam machine is a
9:40 Super Nintendo without Super Mario World it's an Xbox without Halo it's the Wii
9:45 without a gimmicky game in the box that lets you flail a weird dildo and watch
9:50 graphical representations of you and your roommates poning each other at
9:54 bowling so while valve is a smart company and I'm sure someone over there
9:59 has after very careful consideration
10:02 decided that exclusive content doesn't align with the core purpose of this
10:06 entire freaking project a desire to unshackle Gamers from their dependency
10:11 on closed systems from the likes of Microsoft or Sony and drive Linux as a
10:15 more open gaming platform that doesn't change the cold hard truth that this is
10:21 a different market and your Noble philosophy is not going to sell consoles
10:27 great exclusive titles sell cons conses and Steam OS has nothing that doesn't
10:32 run on the regular steam client it manages to deliver none of the core
10:37 benefits of the PC the versatility to run anything through a web browser and
10:41 any app you could possibly want wide compatibility nearly Limitless gaming
10:45 experiences with VR surround endless peripheral choices Etc and manages to
10:51 deliver none of the benefits of a console plug andplay ease of use
10:55 exclusive titles familiarity to Casual users and I guess just can't see who it
11:01 would appeal to other than Tech heads with enough disposable income to toss
11:05 out a random extra box that doesn't really do much under their TV and even
11:09 for them wouldn't they just have an extra $100 then for a Windows license it
11:14 looks like to me that steam os's biggest competitor aside from Steam link which I
11:19 mentioned before is steam itself running
11:22 in Big Picture Mode a much more sensible option for Ballers who want to dether
11:27 that living room gaming experience from their desktop one in case Little
11:31 Sally wants to make a PowerPoint presentation or whatever while they're
11:34 gaming on the TV something that steamlink cannot do because it has to
11:39 display exactly what is on the screen of the computer so if I had to place my bet
11:44 today and it's not the first time I've said this I'm with Razer and NVIDIA on
11:48 the Android gaming bandwagon that is a
11:51 platform with a massive install base and developers who have a track record of
11:55 releasing software on it and expecting to make a good return on the their
11:59 effort as much as I hope I'm wrong and as much as this isn't alienware's fault
12:04 or any of the hardware Partners I'm pronouncing the Steam OS platform Dead
12:09 on Arrival unless there's a seemingly impossible philosophical change at valve
12:15 but you know what doesn't require a dramatic philosophical change to
12:18 appreciate fsp's hydrog g750 power
12:21 supply it features 80 plus gold efficiency with a zero dbel zero noise
12:26 mode depending on the load on the power supply for that 135 mm fluid Dynamic
12:31 bearing fan it is fully modular and it has ecaps that are made in Japan with a
12:36 focus on reliability they're using what they call a server grade design with
12:41 copper bars joining the main board and the daughter board to increase
12:44 conversion efficiency and it comes with three hydr G sticker choices to match a
12:49 variety of build color themes something I wish more manufacturers actually did
12:54 because it can be like everything's matching except there's like your power
12:58 supply sticker and I mean the case industry has gone as far as to make
13:01 cases that cover the power supply so that you don't have to worry about that
13:05 but still there are very very few that feature that so it's nice to see those stickers anyway if you want to learn
13:09 more about that power supply check out the link in the video
13:13 description so that's pretty much it guys thanks for watching if you dislike
13:16 this video Hit dislike if you disagree
13:19 with me about Steam OS hit dislike too if you uh like the video though please
13:23 do hit the like button it does make my self-esteem go up and I think there's
13:27 other things you can do too right yeah get subscribed and maybe even consider
13:30 supporting us by buying a cool shirt like this one uh giving us a monthly
13:34 contribution through our Forum you get a cool little supporter badge or by
13:37 changing your Amazon bookmark to one with our affiliate code instructions for which are up there now that you're done
13:42 doing all that stuff that pretty much wraps it up I think I forget the rest of
13:46 my outro so bye
