0:00 So this is the place we're staying in Singapore with some of my wife's relatives.
0:04 It's absolutely beautiful. We're talking, like, talking parrot, teak wood stairs, just gorgeous interior.
0:13 Actually, it was designed by the owner and then built on this lot here in Singapore.
0:18 Everything about it is just amazing and beautiful, except for one thing.
0:23 The Wi-Fi is awful. I was getting disconnections all over the place.
0:28 I was getting slowdowns. I couldn't even send hangouts messages half the time.
0:32 So being me, I was like, okay, so what's your Wi-Fi solution?
0:37 What's wrong with your internet? Because the speed test is fine.
0:39 It's 50 down, about eight up, which should be plenty for all of that stuff.
0:44 And he shows it to me and I go, oh, okay.
0:49 So these guys are using the ISP provided modem, switch, router, access point combo unit.
0:58 The structure of this place is pure, like, foot-thick concrete.
1:03 And then they've got a repeater down on the landing for the second story that is supposed to provide better coverage downstairs.
1:12 Awful solution.
1:14 So it's time for us to figure out some kind of a networking home makeover while we're staying here.
1:21 What the crap am I doing back here?
1:32 It's like I traveled through time to tell you guys that Intel's new 750 series SSD
1:37 utilized the NVMe standard providing speeds never seen before on consumer storage drives.
1:42 Click anywhere to learn more.
1:45 All right, so we're here at the famous Simlim Square where I'll be trying to find some better wireless gear
1:52 and just kind of generally checking it out because I've heard a lot of stuff about this place.
1:56 Number one is that it's an awesome place to find pretty much anything electronics and computer-y.
2:01 And number two is that it's a great place to get scammed with everyone giving different sorts of advice.
2:07 But apparently Mobile 22 PTE Limited and Gadget Terminal PTE Limited have had a fair number of complaints
2:15 as of the last period here, so I should watch out for those guys.
2:19 Important notice.
2:21 Yeah, let's head inside.
2:23 They have everything here. That last place had, like, an entire rack of machetes.
2:28 I wish they'd had this place when we lost our microphone in Taipei.
2:32 I wonder if I need one of these.
2:35 Probably not.
2:36 I think there's five or six stories?
2:38 They got all kinds of fun stuff on the second floor.
2:41 RC stuff, some more computer-y type stuff, and ladders.
2:47 Lots of ladders.
2:49 I guess if it's an entire, I mean, Singapore's what, eight million people?
2:54 So you're gonna have a third of the population of Canada all within driving distance of this place.
2:59 What do you need online stores for?
3:01 Whoa, look at this.
3:02 It's like a sea of technology.
3:05 Okay, so I think we found our first networking gear shop.
3:08 Hello.
3:09 Hi.
3:10 I am looking for some wireless stuff.
3:14 Oh.
3:15 Lunch.
3:16 Yeah, yeah.
3:17 Okay.
3:18 Do you know what time?
3:19 Maybe 10 minutes, 20 minutes?
3:20 About 20 minutes.
3:21 About 20 minutes?
3:22 Yes.
3:23 All right.
3:24 I will come back in 20 minutes.
3:25 Okay.
3:27 Thank you.
3:28 Okay.
3:29 Thank you.
3:30 Hi.
3:31 Yeah, I'm actually looking for, let's see, I think it would be about a 30-foot Ethernet
3:35 cable.
3:36 White?
3:37 Oh, you only have bulk for white.
3:41 So, the third floor looks like the place to be for getting the networking stuff we need.
3:46 This is her shop where I was told to ask them about the fasteners and white cables.
3:53 Oh, look at that.
3:55 You're bringing everything.
3:56 I need a 10-meter white Ethernet cable.
3:59 No, only Cat 7.
4:00 Only Cat 7.
4:01 Okay.
4:02 How much is that then?
4:03 It's a little overkill.
4:04 Oh, nice.
4:05 It's like a flat one too.
4:06 That's actually kind of awesome.
4:07 $20 is a lot for a 10-meter Ethernet cable though.
4:08 Yeah.
4:09 Yeah.
4:10 It's a lot for a 10-meter Ethernet cable though.
4:11 Okay.
4:12 So, another question for you, do you have any fasteners, like adhesive, like sticky
4:19 fasteners?
4:20 Maybe you can make a bit more.
4:21 If this fits, I will buy this.
4:23 Deal?
4:24 Yep.
4:25 Still good.
4:26 Okay.
4:27 So, I need, let's say, three packs of that.
4:28 This one, left one.
4:29 Last one.
4:30 You already made the sale and now you don't have enough of them.
4:36 Okay.
4:37 Well.
4:38 Last one.
4:39 I...
4:40 Oops.
4:41 I spilled them all.
4:42 Fifteen?
4:43 Okay.
4:44 Okay.
4:45 I'll make it work.
4:46 So, I want this and this.
4:51 $28 for our Ethernet cable and our fasteners.
4:57 All right.
4:58 So, let's head up to the fourth floor.
5:00 Maybe we can find some more wireless stuff there before we head back to the shop on the
5:04 third floor.
5:05 Wow.
5:06 Three laptop stores right in a row.
5:08 More laptop stores.
5:09 Okay.
5:10 More laptop stores.
5:11 Too bad I'm not shopping for a laptop.
5:14 All right.
5:15 Well, these guys are more like my speed.
5:17 I need a 128-gig SSD and I need a two-gig stick of DDR2.
5:22 $99 for my SSD and $46 for my RAM.
5:25 I think I can do better on the SSD, but I'm not sure about the RAM.
5:28 Thank you.
5:29 Two-gig stick of DDR2.
5:30 $55.
5:31 $55?
5:32 To DDR3, cheap.
5:33 Yeah.
5:34 How about the 128-gig SSD?
5:35 $105.
5:36 $105?
5:37 Memory 1.
5:38 $105.
5:39 $105.
5:40 $105.
5:41 $105.
5:42 $105.
5:43 $105.
5:44 How about the SSD?
5:45 $139?
5:46 Looks like we're back to the first store.
5:49 You guys win.
5:50 Everyone else's price sucks.
5:51 Okay.
5:52 DDR2?
5:53 Hello.
5:54 $800.
5:55 DDR2, $800.
5:56 Perfect.
5:57 Yeah, I come all the way here to buy computer hardware, right?
5:59 You want to be in the video?
6:02 $145.
6:03 All right.
6:05 Everyone else gave me really bad prices, maybe because I'm white.
6:09 We got our RAM and SSD, but we still need our networking stuff.
6:14 Like all of these laptops are broken.
6:22 Why do you keep them?
6:23 Just in case.
6:24 Oh good, yeah, this one does include
6:26 both the PoE adapter and the unit.
6:30 So in fact, I won't even need a PoE switch.
6:32 That's excellent.
6:33 Another option would just be to get like a Nighthawk X6
6:36 and call it a day.
6:37 You know, repeat things.
6:39 Yeah, I don't wanna use a repeater.
6:41 529, these things are like 300 bucks where I'm from.
6:45 That's ridiculous.
6:46 Yeah.
6:47 I will have to, I will have to come back.
6:49 No problem.
6:50 Okay, another network specialty looking store.
6:53 Cash price, 378.
6:55 378, wow.
6:59 Maybe this place has stuff.
7:01 At least it's not a laptop store.
7:03 Okay, there's nothing in there.
7:05 What's pricing on the AC66U?
7:08 243.
7:09 243, okay.
7:11 Not bad, so far you're the best option right now.
7:14 245 for an AC66U, I'm gonna have to,
7:18 no PoE, I have to get power to it somehow.
7:20 This is ridiculous.
7:22 Like I promised your uncle one cable to the pillar,
7:26 not like two cables to the pillar.
7:29 So you know what I think we're gonna do?
7:32 Oh, I don't like this at all,
7:33 but we're gonna go get one AP Pro
7:37 and we're going to hope that the coverage is good enough
7:41 from right in the center.
7:43 And if it's not, then we're gonna need another one.
7:47 Whatever they have there.
7:48 I want to buy it.
7:49 The first study cafe.
7:51 This place is like a maze.
7:53 I can't even find the stores we were shopping at before.
7:57 AP Pro, 389.
7:59 AP Pro, 408.
8:01 Ah, we just saved 20 bucks.
8:03 Do you guys have a UniFi AP Pros in stock?
8:07 Okay, well, I don't have much more time to shop,
8:10 so I don't think we have a choice.
8:11 Yep, let's do it.
8:14 Well, overall, I'm not happy about it,
8:15 but at least they waived the 3% stupid credit card.
8:17 I don't know.
8:19 It's a pretty hard surcharge after I asked, what, three times.
8:24 All right, so we're back.
8:27 Let's unpack our spoils and get started here.
8:30 So there's actually two projects
8:32 because there was some complaining
8:34 about the desktop computer upstairs.
8:37 So for that, we need an SSD and a stick of memory.
8:43 So we got that.
8:45 And then for the Wi-Fi, we need our new UniFi AP Pro,
8:48 our CAT 7 cable, and then these cable management tabs here.
8:54 So let's get started, shall we?
9:01 This is so not a CAT 7 cable.
9:04 Well, I guess it could be CAT 6.
9:06 So what's the easiest way?
9:10 Well, this door gets to be open a crack from now on.
9:13 Is that gonna be a problem?
9:14 That, my friend, is how it is gonna be to get good internet.
9:21 Go right down here so we get a nice clean line.
9:25 Okay, so I'm not sure about ideal.
9:27 There's no location.
9:28 Part of the problem is this structure is all concrete.
9:31 Concrete, concrete.
9:34 It doesn't look like I'm gonna have a choice.
9:35 So either I think I'm gonna do that pillar on the second floor
9:40 or I'm gonna run it to mount on this thing.
9:44 What I might ask is, what's the priority?
9:46 Because if the priority is the downstairs,
9:48 then I might be better off to go here.
9:59 That's what you get for having bad Wi-Fi.
10:06 So one of the reasons we had to,
10:07 spend so much on our access point was PoE, power over Ethernet, so that I don't have to run those
10:12 two wires. And what I like about the ubiquities anyway, is that they come with an injector in
10:18 case you don't have a PoE switch. Do these two pronged ones work here? Oh, you have an adapter.
10:24 Oh, handy. All right. Did not count on that. So we might need to use some kind of adhesive backing
10:30 and I didn't get any extra. Oh yeah. I also need to steal one of your Ethernet cables. Okay.
10:44 Now let's go plug this guy in. See if we got power. I might have to go switch those things
10:57 around. I always get it wrong. Any light? Oh, there it goes. All right. Now we got to get the
11:07 console fired up. Okay. So to configure the thing, we need to install the ubiquity controller
11:14 software. So let's fire up this ancient Dell Optiplex 760. This is actually the computer
11:21 I'll be upgrading and get it set up. Once we've got the controller set up, it doesn't actually
11:26 ever need to interact with the controller. So I'm not worried about that. We just need to get it
11:33 set up the first time. Who says text don't, you know, work out. No wonder they want this computer
11:41 upgraded. I can't even do anything in an internet browser. Even the mouse movement is slow. Oh my
11:50 goodness. This computer needs more than just a new SSD and some RAM. The most up-to-date browser
11:59 or something. All right. So per the usual, the ubiquity software is super easy to get set up. So
12:05 all we've got to do now is manually set up our channels, manually set up our widths.
12:11 During the setup wizard, I was able to set up the SSID and everything. So what's left now then
12:19 is to have a look at the surrounding area. And you can see that this is why I thought it was so
12:25 important to have five gigahertz. Cause actually from the, from the outside,
12:29 from the backyard, there's a bunch of stuff in here. So stuff on channel six, seven, um, their
12:35 old Wi-Fi was on channel one, actually both the X, the repeater and the original access point were on
12:41 one. So they're just talking over each other, but on five gigahertz, basically empty. So actually,
12:49 the only thing we can see right now is the one that I just put in. So we're going to go ahead
12:54 and we're going to play around with positioning a little bit. We're going to make sure that from
12:58 everywhere within the house, we've got a lot of stuff in here. So we're going to go ahead and
12:59 set this baby up. All right. So here in the back corner, we can see there's a couple on channel 36
13:07 from this neighbor, but our strength is still not that bad on five gigahertz. Naturally, this floor
13:15 is all very good with the access point right in the middle. Even five gigahertz can punch through,
13:22 you know, one concrete wall. Okay. Actually should be workable. All right. So way at the back is
13:29 actually quite a lot of work. So we're going to go ahead and set this baby up. All right. So here
13:30 at the back, you can see what I was talking about with 2.4 gigahertz being completely congested and
13:46 five gigahertz basically being our best bet to not be completely interfering with absolutely
13:51 everything else. Yeah. You won't be FaceTiming back here. Ooh, Russian girls. So now that we've
14:03 determined the location we want, I'm just going to go ahead and set this baby up. All right. So
14:05 I'm going to throw a little sticky note on here that has the admin password and all that good
14:11 stuff. Actually, I'm going to put it on the mounting plate. Then I have double-sided adhesive.
14:19 That's the best solution I was able to come up with. I got two different kinds. So I'm going
14:23 to hedge my bets and I'm going to use half of each. While what I wanted to do to have it on
14:31 the bottom stair. Nope. Okay. This one. I'm going to apply pressure about 30 seconds.
14:38 Okay. Um, I do want to leave this like some kind of a knot here, actually. If the adhesive fails,
14:51 I don't want it to come crashing to the ground. So this is where my cable management tabs from
14:56 upstairs come in. Straight lines are good. All right. How many times do I have left? Oh, nine.
15:02 So that is nine feet. Okay. So we're going to go every foot. Okay. Okay. So I think we're done now.
15:21 Okay. So I think we're done now. Our connectivity was pretty good to begin with. Now, this is all
15:21 because we're trying to figure out how to set up and put it back. The hardest part is getting everything
15:21 All right. So that is nine feet. Okay. So we're going to go every foot. Okay. So I think we're done now. Our
15:21 Okay. So I think we're done now. Our connectivity was pretty good to begin with. Now, our
15:23 Our connectivity up here is the only place in the house
15:26 where it's really not as consistent as I'd like,
15:29 not as good as I'd like, but I think we found a solution
15:32 because it's only very rarely that someone
15:34 is gonna be using something like a phone up here.
15:36 This is actually the worst performing device
15:37 in the house for Wi-Fi.
15:39 That laptop over there, that old laptop,
15:41 gets 40 megabit from the position on this desk right here
15:44 on our range network.
15:46 So that's what we ended up doing.
15:47 We made two SSIDs, speed and range.
15:52 Speed can saturate the 100 megabit connection
15:55 that we have here at this location
15:57 from anywhere downstairs, pretty much.
15:59 And then range is able to,
16:01 even on our worst case scenario device,
16:03 give us about five to 10 megabit up here.
16:06 Not too shabby.
16:08 Then what we did was we reconfigured
16:11 the existing access point as more of a failover.
16:13 So we called this one attic.
16:15 And so if range on a particular device
16:18 is not working well up here,
16:19 can connect directly to that one.
16:21 Then we like to have it
16:22 left the range extender downstairs.
16:23 And with a little bit of repositioning,
16:25 I'm able to get 20 megabit
16:27 at the very bottom floor with that one.
16:29 But we're just gonna leave that unplugged
16:31 unless our Ubiquiti access point fails
16:33 or something like that.
16:34 So now we have not only better speeds
16:37 pretty much throughout the house,
16:39 but we also have a failover system
16:41 in the event that the access point dies
16:45 or something like that.
16:46 So not too shabby.
16:49 Is it the ideal solution?
16:50 No.
16:51 What I wanted was a 24 seven controller running
16:55 and two access points,
16:56 one at the top, one at the bottom.
16:58 Then I think I could get anywhere from 50 to 100 megabit
17:01 anywhere on the property.
17:03 That would have been great.
17:04 We weren't able to do that because you know how things are.
17:07 So this is not a bad solution overall.
17:11 What madness is this?
17:12 I'm back in the studio.
17:15 Crunchyroll must have bent space and time
17:19 to bring me back anyway.
