0:07 welcome to my unboxing and first look at the ds411 from sonology so I don't know
0:11 if you guys are that familiar with nas Brands but yeah sonology is like up here
0:17 in terms of the overall quality the user experience I've never used one before
0:21 I'm just going based on hearsay but I'm very excited to be checking this one out
0:25 and I will be using it so I have very high expectations for this particular
0:29 particular Nas enclosure this so this is a 4B let's go over the features first
0:34 great for file sharing duh it's a Nas okay web server cool so you can run a
0:38 small website off of it data protection and raid so this uh this enclosure
0:42 supports raid 0156 and 10 yes it supports raid six
0:48 very cool although with actually hold on hold on okay hold on hold on let's take
0:51 a step back let's take a step back raid
0:55 six in a 4B enclosure is actually kind of brain dead because raid six requires
1:00 two drives for parody and destroys your right performance whereas RAID 10 will
1:05 also require two drives for parody and will have fantastic performance so okay
1:09 maybe that's pointless but raid five is good because you only need one parody
1:13 drive so you can have better capacity than RAID 10 uh okay mobile access okay
1:18 using your smartphone or whatever else DNA media server fully compliant with
1:22 that surveillance server compliant oh cool okay PC backup is supported mail
1:26 server is supported compatible with Windows Mac and Linux no problem
1:30 Windows ads you know what I actually don't know what that means so feel free
1:33 to leave a comment on the video and let me know online photo sharing in a print
1:36 server okay cool and so this is basically all that stuff we just saw
1:40 except like with arrows interesting uh
1:44 the ds411 is slightly higher performance than the 411 J with these Nas units it
1:49 often comes down to the performance of
1:52 the network controller so most of them are gigabit now so that's less of an
1:56 issue it used to be that a lot of them were 1000 which is just way too slow um
2:01 in this day and age um and it also comes down to the performance of the processor
2:06 because um especially if you're running in a raid configuration such as raid
2:11 five which is going to be how exactly how I would want to run this enclosure
2:15 because raid five means you use okay so if you have three or four three terabyte
2:20 drives um jbod would give you 12
2:23 terabytes okay so stick with me here guys so jbod however jbod just a bunch
2:27 of discs doesn't provide any data redundancy so any protection from a data
2:32 from a hard drive failure so not ideal
2:36 raid one will give you only 6 terabytes
2:40 of storage but will protect you from up to two hard drive failures as long as
2:45 they're not both on the same uh on the same data mirror okay so there's that
2:50 raid five gives you 9 terabytes of data
2:53 and will allow for up to one outright drive failure so it's the perfect
2:58 balance um although you do have a bit of a performance impact uh RAID 10 gives
3:03 you oh I already talked about RAID 10 so RAID 10 gives you great performance and
3:06 raid five will impact performance negatively but uh right so that right right right
3:11 so in your ideal configuration which is raid five to get the most out of your
3:15 storage drives that you're paying good money for um the processor is a huge
3:20 Factor because the faster your processor is the faster it can calculate that
3:24 parody bit that's required for raid five
3:27 operation and for the redundancy that it provides so let's go ahead and take all
3:32 this stuff out and let's have a look at the unit itself so it's a 4bay NZ the
3:36 whole front is basically uh ventilated slits here uh you've also got uh
3:42 indicators for the four hard drives that it is compatible with land indicator
3:45 status indicator and a power switch is right at the front on the side you find
3:49 not a whole lot to write home about a sonology logo on the other side you find
3:53 a completely matching sonology
3:57 logo okay nothing exciting sorry uh 2 60
4:01 mm fans round out the back those look like low profile fans yep um hopefully
4:06 they're not too loud but I haven't fired it up yet so I don't know yet power in
4:10 gigabit Land Two USB 2.0 ports so that's
4:13 you know for your print server or whatever other functionality eat a port
4:16 so that's kind of neat okay maybe there's more of a point to raid six with
4:20 this thing than I thought if you want to run something else off of it a reset
4:23 switch so that's your hard reset and it looks like you got thumb screws to take
4:26 the whole sort of back apart now what I want to know is how do you actually
4:29 install a drive in here the bottom is on little feet which is sort of good and uh
4:36 ah included accessories power adapter other more different power cable
4:40 Ethernet cable screws to install drives
4:43 and apparently to install a lot of
4:46 things okay H welcome read this first
4:49 don't mind if I do what's in here probably a quick start
4:53 guide Vel lots of different languages that's
4:57 good uh except that I can't find English
5:00 come on help me English English welcome
5:03 there we go uh thank you for purchasing this check this for compatible hard
5:07 drives if you buy Reds you'll know that it's compatible um regularly something
5:11 something okay thank you for that that's actually the most useless read this
5:15 first that I think I've ever encountered um setup discs and warranty
5:20 information and whatnot so give me a second here guys I'm going
5:25 to have to try and figure out how to open this thing up yeah I totally nubbed
5:28 out on those fans those are standard profile 80 mm so the fact that they're
5:31 using two larger fans in the back of a 4bay enclosure like this is uh very
5:36 promising this should be extremely quiet so let's go ahead and load this in so
5:40 you can see it's rear loaded oh I'm sorry I never even showed you guys we
5:43 okay here here here hold on hold on uh we turn the okay apparently this comes
5:48 off now too that we've uh that we've removed the back piece okay then so it's
5:53 rear loaded so we turned it around see like that uh take off the four thumb
5:57 screws and this just drops down like this and then you can load in your four
6:01 drives just like that so I'm going to pull out these other sleds so you guys can see the back plane that's built into
6:05 there they're using a proprietary motherboard down in the bottom so let's
6:09 go ahead and uh actually let's check it out there you go Marvel controller over
6:16 there whatever this is sorry I'm totally in the way of the
6:20 camera here so nothing out of the ordinary pretty much there's all your
6:23 activity LED all of your activity LEDs there's the uh that looks like a PCI
6:28 Express for X interface or like some kind of custom SATA something depending
6:33 on what kind of a chipset they're using um whatever none of that's really
6:37 important the point is the non J version has the higher end uh the higher-end
6:42 processor and uh actually this is a really this is a really smooth uh
6:46 installation uh you can install Ah that's why it comes with more screws
6:50 check this out so besides installing the drives on the sleds and sliding them in
6:54 you can actually install yet another longer screw if you want even more
6:58 security like if you're going to you know ship it somewhere or something like that pre-installed and then you just
7:03 close it back up and you're good to go so thank you for checking out my unboxing and first look at the ds411 and
7:08 I haven't actually gone through the specs so we're not quite done and uh
7:11 there's no specs on here that we didn't talk about already so we're done and
7:16 right why did I say that WD Reds are the ideal driv so they have longer meantime
7:20 between failures um longer warranty they
7:23 have 24/7 phone support if you have any kind of a problem they have Nas
7:27 optimized firmware they also vibrate less so in a multi-drive enclosure like
7:31 this they're less likely to vibrate and interfere with each other and they are
7:35 validated by WD and by the nas makers to
7:38 be compatible so you don't even have to look it up on uh sy's website you'll
7:43 know that a red Drive will work in your Nas thank you for checking out my
