0:00 so today I'll be doing a quick unboxing of a new SSD from ocz this is the vertex
0:05 250 gig now the specs for the vertex 2
0:09 50 gig 100 Gig 200 gig 60 gig 120 gig
0:13 and 240 gig it's available in a lot of
0:16 capacities are pretty much the same now the biggest difference between the
0:20 vertex 2 and the vertex 1 is that the vertex 2 uses the new sandforce
0:24 controller it uses the sf200 and the whole vertex 2 Series unlike sandforce
0:30 controllers from other manufacturers and unlike the agility 2 Series has a
0:34 special firmware tweak that allows it to get better performance in wrs basically
0:40 okay it's a high performance design mlc flash memory trim support raid
0:43 capability all of those pretty much go without saying these days and it
0:47 includes a 3 and 1 12 in SSD adapter for desktops that's pretty neat let's flip
0:51 around to the back see what ocz has to say for themselves here now this is the
0:56 trick read up to 285 megab per second and write up to 275 megab perss with
1:02 sustained rights up to 250 megab per second that's huge because the sandforce
1:08 controller actually allows mlc flash to
1:11 write more data than you are actually
1:15 writing to the dis now I'm going to explain what that means it's basically
1:19 compressing the data let's say you've got 10 gigs of data you're going to just
1:23 write to your drive it's compressing it on the Fly which means compared to the
1:27 older indeling controller it's quite a bit more complicated
1:30 but it means that maybe even though it's writing 10 gigs of data and then it'll
1:34 read off 10 gigs of data it might might only write 8 gigs of data so that means
1:38 a your SSD will last longer because you're using fewer right cycles and B it
1:44 will go faster because you're writing that 10 gigs of data to uh in only 8
1:50 gigs so it'll go 20% faster and I don't have a knife today but that's okay you
1:55 guys can live while I just uh cut this
1:59 open with a pen wow they've really improved the resiliency of their plastic
2:04 on the packaging compared to previous vertex series drives there we go it's
2:09 finally off okay let's get this opened up so see we had to look at the specs uh
2:15 oh well it opens at the top not the side how
2:20 Innovative okay okay here we go so they've updated their um their included
2:26 foamy packaging thing to uh have like a slot in the back where they've stuffed
2:32 in a 2 and 1/2 in to 3 and 1/2 in drive
2:35 adapter so there it is it looks like that uh I I don't remember if I did an
2:39 unboxing on this at some point or not but it's fairly straightforward you just
2:43 um here I'll just pull the drive out really quick so you just use the screws
2:47 on the bottom of the drive strap them in like this and then you attach this to
2:52 your case using the 3 and 1 12 in Drive Bay holes okay so let's have a look at
2:56 what else they've included also some uh mounting screws so four screws to attach
3:01 the SSD to the adapter and then four screws to mount the adapter in your case
3:06 thanks ocz then they've also got a warranty card here installation guide
3:10 and warranty info let's see how long is the warranty on this
3:14 one H 3 years there you go threeyear
3:19 warranty awesome let's get the drive opened up here caution content sensitive
3:25 to electrostatic discharge open only at a static free workstation ooh
3:30 okay well hopefully that won't be a problem for us
3:34 today that open up okay so it looks uh
3:37 just like the old vertex drives actually this is kind of funny they have changed
3:41 the shape of the sticker but they haven't changed the shape of the outline
3:46 for the sticker in the top of the drive so it's a square cutout with a rounded
3:50 sticker in it now also they've updated the label with two rather than just
3:56 vertex excellent Improvement there as well your warranty is void if this is
4:00 removed or broken so you can't take the drive apart and then let's have a look
4:05 so we got our 2 and 1/2 in mounting holes here we got our 2 and 1/2 in
4:08 mounting holes on the other side and then at the bottom we have more 2 and
4:13 1/2 in standard mounting holes so this will fit and almost any laptop or 2 and
4:18 1/2 in adapter or uh case that supports 2 and 1/2 in drives here is our part
4:23 number so it is the uh 2 VTX
4:27 series okay and then let me see what else do we have here oh yeah we've got
4:32 our SATA 2 power and SATA 2 data now these drives do still run off of SATA 2
4:37 rather than the new SATA 3 but the reality of it is SATA 3 wouldn't really
4:42 contribute anything because the maximum performance of SATA 2 is 300 megabit per
4:48 second or about wait no it isn't 1.5 3
4:52 gabit per second which comes out to roughly and this isn't quite right 300
4:57 megabytes per second so at 285 2 75 for reads and writs this drive is still not
5:02 bottlenecked by the satat 2 interface anyway thank you for checking out my
5:06 unboxing of the ocz vertex 2 SSD
