4:59 year that's pretty sick so this is this is incredible for a number of reasons
5:04 number one is so compared to the US that
5:07 is what does that work out to was about 70,000 US schools so there's yeah about
5:13 70,000 us element schools like five to six times as many elementary schools
5:17 actually pretty nuts and that's and that's at Pro probably around $400 to
5:21 $3,000 per printer so that's actually a freaking lot of money yep metric but ton
5:26 of money but um and obviously the Source
5:30 here is 3dprint.com so it's going to be pretty
5:34 positive about that so it's going to be like yeah really pretty everything
5:39 possible is good yes cool this was posted on the Forum by Victoria Secret

5:47 agree with everything that they're saying 3D printing is going to be a life
5:52 skill for the kids of the Next Generation in the same way that us being
5:56 able to use a printer is a like life skill and you know we take we take it
6:01 kind of for granted that you know anyone in the anyone our age knows how to you
6:08 probably maybe install a printer driver
6:11 at the very least use the you know the print properties dialog to select the
6:16 printer that they want to print from and not fix the printer hopefully change you
6:20 know landscape to Portrait or something like like you're going to have these
6:24 rudimentary skills and then least some of them yeah so to like my kids being
6:31 able to configure they're going to laugh when you know I don't know how to you
6:36 know preheat the I'll show you how to
6:39 set up the printer although you'll probably be fine and you know what it's
6:42 not even it's not even I mean by the time these are rolling out in homes I I
6:46 highly doubt we're going to be dealing with the same filament based 3D printing
6:49 Technologies there there's some other way cooler stuff out there and as
6:54 pricing comes down on that stuff as patents expire over the next you know
6:58 sort of 10 to 25 years as they're apt to do there's
7:02 going to be some really exciting really cool stuff available in the home and
7:07 younger kids are going to completely take for granted that this technology is
7:11 readily accessible and easy to use we we did that for a bunch of stuff though
7:15 unless you don't give them any access to
7:19 it I see where you're going with that this is where I'm going with this if
7:25 young kids don't have access to 3D printing technology and aren't playing
7:28 with it because that's what it's all about that's what learning is about when you're a kid what did you do with a
7:33 printer when you were a kid you printed out aski art or like a picture of your
7:38 face that you scanned on the flatbed scanner that you were also learning how
7:42 to use or like okay like my buddy whose
7:45 dad had a color dot matrix oh Dam whoa
7:50 Bo I know if I've ever even seen a color boy so color color. Matrix so like we

8:00 remember how the pages used to F according style so we had like these six
8:03 page long Color Prints of our names that we could put in our on our walls that's
8:07 cool like that's the kind of thing that feels stupid to us as adults because we
8:12 take that technology for granted especially top Matrix because we played
8:16 with it as kids so I sit there and I look at that going well if 3D printing
8:20 is the future of Rapid manufacturing and the future of being a maker and being
8:25 able to design things and innovate it might be the future of just like owning
8:29 a home and China and stuff is setting up
8:33 their entire next generation of children to understand this technology and and
8:38 take it for granted the same way that we take the things that we had for granted
8:42 then um you got to kind of look at that and
8:46 go you know hey are we are we investing
8:49 our money correctly right now and Obama kind of agrees with the lus side of
8:54 things where he has said apparently in a State of the Union Address that he uh
8:58 well not I don't have any NE necessary quotes but apparently he said that 3D
9:01 printing is very important yep he's he definitely talked about the importance
9:05 of 3D printing um even and I think the point it was mentioned in the article on
9:09 3dprint.com but he even brought it up in
9:12 a State of the Union Address uh something to do with bringing manufacturing back to the us and this is
9:17 going to be really important and all that stuff um but yeah I think that I I
9:22 think that we are underestimating the importance of 3D printing because it's
9:25 so expensive but China's going ahead and they're getting ahead of the curve
9:28 they're going yep we're going to get everyone educated about this while it's
9:32 still really expensive so when this stuff starts to hit the mainstream and we're going to be part of accelerating
9:37 accelerating it to the mainstream when it hits the mainstream our population is
9:41 going to know how to take advantage of this technology and compete better
9:44 against their Rivals I mean imagine if everyone on your Workforce knew how to
9:49 use a 3D printer and if they had a great idea and they could kind of just bring
9:53 it to you and all it cost is you know your 10 bucks or 20 bucks hey who the
9:57 heck knows how big of a thing they're printing however much filament they're
10:01 using um if we get a 3D printer I'm
10:04 having like filament rations cuz I am sure that there are there are and I
10:10 mainly Taran Taran would print endless Lego yeah like end well I can't even
10:15 call it Lego like Lego Lego knockoff yeah Teran go yeah I

11:10 86 PPI 86 PPS per inch which gets people like
11:17 me pretty peeping excited PPS per inch
11:20 PPS per inch it's like rip and peace and
11:24 that's very important that's how people rest forever
11:30 um so basically we've Luke and I have
11:33 kind of talked about how on phones in
11:37 particular um this whole 5 and 1/2 inch
11:40 thing I mean this is rumored to be showing up in devices as soon as late
11:45 2016 early 2017 and we've talked in
11:49 depth about the difference between 1080P and 1440p on a device like this and how
11:55 there isn't and moving to 4K is just
11:59 using up more computational resources
12:02 for no apparent reason other than to have a a bigger batter spec than the
12:08 next guy and this this is one of those things that I admire about Apple I talk
12:12 about this a lot I hate on Apple a lot when they do stuff that's really stupid
12:16 but I also oh man we'll talk about the watch
12:21 later apparently it's okay whatever we'll talk about the watch later um but
12:25 but I also have to give them mad respect when they just Buck the industry Trend
12:30 and do the correct thing Apple was correct to move the smartphone industry
12:35 towards high resolution displays high density displays they were also correct
12:40 when they said you know what it's actually fine the way it is and a high
12:45 contrast display with good pixel response times and accurate color and
12:49 all these things that actually matter to the experience that's more important
12:53 than us just cranking uh pixel density
12:56 for for for no tangible benefit it and
13:00 you're going to get better battery life out of that you're going to get better performance in games when you're running
13:03 at a lower resolution um especially if there's no reason to be running at a
13:07 higher resolution I don't necessarily agree with what Apple does with that
13:12 extra power savings where they just make the device thinner instead of putting
13:15 like a nice wonk and battery in it um but I have to respect them for doing the
13:21 right thing versus doing the thing that gives them a more impressive spec sheet
13:26 but I'm going to throw something at you
13:31 my butt is who cares about putting this
13:34 in phones this is going to be all about
13:38 yes okay you have the same butt as me dad hmd mine's a little smaller yes um I
13:46 we don't really know yet where the perceivable stoppage is going to be for
13:49 VR because I haven't really looked at a 4K screen in VR before I don't think
13:54 many people have no um so there's that so like it we might already be there it
13:58 might be like 1440p to 4K might not really be you've seen 1440p though I
14:03 have and it feels like there could be more but there's other stuff that they could do to fix that too part of the
14:07 problem with a lot of demos right now is they're mainly Tech demos so you'll
14:11 people aren't working on that but at the same time not interacting with it which
14:15 is a huge problem yeah exactly and there's people really highend in VR that
14:19 have said that they want to see 4K screens so I'm kind of leaning towards
14:22 we do need that so I'm excited for this because of that not even remotely
14:26 interested in it for folks I mean have I I I'm you're going to have to correct me
14:30 if I'm wrong here but haven't we even heard 8K as sort of the Magic The Magic
14:35 where it's going to be enough number yeah we're so we're so far away from the
14:39 GPU power to drive that though yes and
14:43 and because you need the minimum FPS minimum FPS is so important for VR it's
14:48 ridiculous because if people are like I want to end up doing VR benchmarks
14:52 eventually and what I might even be interested in reporting is just minimums
14:57 interesting just because that drop is going to be where people get motion
15:01 sickness that drop is exactly what you're going to notice all the time
15:05 we're going to have to we're going to have to start doing the benching completely differently like we're going
15:09 to have to go out to an HDMI splitter
15:14 and we're going to have to go to a capture PC because uh methods like fraps
15:18 simply don't capture instantaneous FPS well enough yeah so we're going to be
15:22 interesting we're have to have a look we're going to have to explore yeah exactly we're going to have to explore
15:26 how we're going to Benchmark stuff for the VR space but that's
15:29 not coming now I guess so that's
15:33 fine yeah anyways anyway so yeah it's
15:36 it's exciting it's apparently an exop panel um which doesn't actually tell us
15:41 a whole lot about how good it is that's just the Indian Gallum something
15:46 something something zinc oxide or I think something along those lines that
15:49 just tells us a material that Sharp's using for it because I've seen exop
15:53 panel displays that look great and I've seen exop panel displays that look good
15:57 but not as good so um yeah that doesn't tell us everything that uh that we need
16:02 that we need to know uh what I'm really what I'm really interested to see though
16:05 is does that mean that we're going to get 8K you know 11 in monitors right
16:12 that's the same pixel density this is one of those things you know what maybe
16:16 an engineer can explain this to me if anyone out there is a display engineer
16:20 you hit me up on Twitter or something not during the show because if you look
16:25 at my Twitter feed during the show it's redonkulous um but but hit me up and let
16:29 me know if I'm a complete idiot because I think aside from yields being
16:34 exponentially lower um so it should be
16:37 it should be something something two two
16:41 whatever they're called two Powers low two Powers worse uh because you've got
16:46 four versus one so so you D you've doubled it twice in terms of your odds
16:52 of having a defect because you've you've quadrupled the size um so aside from
16:57 that when we have the technology is
17:00 there any reason why we can't make if we can make a 4K display that's 15 in is
17:06 there a reason that we can't make an 8K display that's 30 in that's that's kind
17:11 of what I would like to understand a little bit better and there's probably a
17:14 reason yeah I'm just obviously an idiot like why did why did Apple have to do so
17:20 much work on the backlight of the retina
17:23 iMac um to get the brightness high enough when they've got already when
17:27 we've already got pixel densities like that on phones that are also super thin
17:32 and also have
17:36 backlights so yeah some someone someone can someone can school me and I'm always
17:40 more than happy to be schooled speaking of getting schooled uh coolax gaming

18:07 of discussion in the forums about you know the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4
18:11 being the savior of AMD looks like they're not the savior of anyone um
18:17 unfortunately uh you know all this all this talk about sort of you know AMD
18:22 being a great sort of performer at the value end and that kind of stuff is true
18:27 but unfortunately that that doesn't do a
18:30 whole lot of good for their bottom line as a company I mean you you see a lot of
18:33 people kind of going oh Intel charges so much Intel's a profitable company if AMD
18:39 could charge you let me see what what percentage their loss was I let me have
18:44 a look hold on hold on so oh no that's
18:48 the non generally accepted I think they had it broken down
18:52 by yeah Computing and Graphics so Computing and graphics on revenues of
18:57 $532 million lost 75 million so AMD processors AMD
19:05 CPUs and gpus need to be 30% more
19:09 expensive for AMD to be even making like a 10 to
19:12 15% profit on it so you got to ask
19:16 yourself if you're an AMD supporter if they jacked their prices 30% tomorrow
19:21 would you still buy it can they be competitive with the technology they
19:24 have today and that's something that
19:27 many folks in the IND industry have been kind of looking at AMD and wondering
19:32 where is the light at the end of this at the end of this tunnel I mean they have
19:35 a new Apu coming but we've heard that
19:39 story every time they've had a new Apu coming that's supposed to be the new the
19:43 new savior it's going to be way faster it's like that's great you know who else
19:47 is coming out with way faster apus Intel
19:50 um which is a real problem for and there that yeah I mean that Intel doesn't call
19:55 it an APU because apparently they think that that ging is irrelevant um for
20:01 whatever reason Intel just kind of didn't go yeah we'll support calling
20:04 this an APU but Intel's building CPUs with more and more and more powerful
20:10 gpus all the time you look at die shots of the latest Intel chips it's like you
20:15 got so if if you got a quad core CPU for example or dual core CPU you got like
20:20 your CPU over here and like your GPU over here it's actually pretty crazy
20:25 Intel is building apus they're they're stepping up quite CU for a while there
20:29 it was no contest at all yep and now it's oh yeah Intel was like such a joke
20:34 the one thing that AMD still really Lords over Intel on the integrated
20:38 Graphics side is drivers yeah and uh there was a really great post I want to
20:42 say it was on Reddit from a guy who uh who interned at NVIDIA for a while and
20:47 he was talking about just how broken games are and how the only reason
20:52 any of it works at all is the years and
20:56 years and years of expertise that the driver teams at NVIDIA and AMD have just
21:04 fixing this stuff over and over and over again and just just going in and fixing
21:09 just fundamental completely basic stuff
21:13 at game by game by game by game and the
21:17 fact that they have that entire backlog of fixes means that a new company that
21:23 tried to you know let's say let's say
21:26 qualcom decided they wanted to build a desktop GPU or let's say Intel decided
21:32 they wanted to build you know code name
21:36 let's call it rarily or rarly or whatever something
21:41 like that let's say they wanted to build a graphics like a graphics core
21:46 um it would be nearly impossible for them to catch up to teams of dozens of
21:52 people working for literally years on
21:55 literally just that yeah fixing broken game c look at GTA 5 there was a
22:00 specific like the name of the driver was GTA 5 for both teams driver that came
22:06 out yep AMD has a beta GTA V driver and
22:09 NVIDIA has a GTA V dver and this is with
22:13 what by most accounts seems to be a pretty good
22:18 Port yeah straight up development yeah
22:21 like they actually did work to make the PC version it's really smooth different
22:26 we have our video coming out soon different yeah actually you've been hard at work on that haven't you there's a
22:31 bunch more more benchmarking numbers than we normally have and with a call
22:35 out at the end for what else you might want to see for future gaming benchmarks
22:38 I'm trying to take gaming benchmarks away from just graphics card showdowns
22:42 and we're going to try and make it like a how does this game really you just
22:45 gave away everything cuz what other what other what other thing what other
22:50 component of the system affects game performance but we didn't fully explore
22:54 it so I'm wondering exactly what they want to see sure they'll tell me in the
22:59 video it's cool I don't mind spoiling it they'll get it soon yeah no I I already
23:02 had some ideas so okay all right just just spoil it cuz I'm sure they're going
23:06 to be giving us a bunch of crap GTA is pretty freaking good I what I did was I
23:10 checked uh cores I recently released cores for gaming so I did like a course
23:15 for GTA V part of the GTA V video and like half the comments under the video
23:19 or why didn't you test this game why didn't you test that game you know what just calm your panties we tested quite a
23:24 few games now we tested GTA 5 all right we're adding that to the sleo things so
23:29 we tested it with two cores two cores hyperthreaded four cores four cores
23:33 hyper threaded six cores hyperthreaded and eight cores hyper threaded ballin
23:37 I'm not going to should I spoil everything should we do 36 cores hyperthreaded at some point oh for
23:43 anyone who doesn't sorry uh we you it's okay I'll talk about this after you go
23:47 well am I spoiling it more or should I make yeah you guys should watch the
23:50 video okay so for those of you who don't follow on Instagram and Twitter and
23:55 where I've been posting some of this stuff Intel confirmed
23:59 we are getting two and I feel terrible
24:02 right now because I've completely forgotten the model number CU I I don't
24:07 actually really keep here we go I don't really keep up on the like
24:13 $4,600 processors that much they're sort of out of my price range if you know
24:18 what I mean but we we are getting two
24:22 2699 V3 18 core processors the these are 2.3 GHz
24:31 base frequency 18 core processors and if
24:35 you do a little bit of funny math it does not work this way if I ever see any
24:41 of you guys doing this to calculate the relative performance of a CPU I am
24:45 giving you guys so much crap about it because it is not the right way to do it
24:50 but you're doing it right now I'm doing it right now but if we went 2.3 GHz
24:54 which is the minimum I don't even know what it's going to Turbo at normally
24:58 times 18 that gives us an equivalent raw
25:02 sort of processing I know I shut up I
25:05 know 4.1 gigahertz if if and you have to
25:10 you have to admit this is right it has 45 Megs of
25:14 cash okay like that's more cash than my
25:19 first computer had RAM like my first
25:22 computer that I owned was like a Pentium 90 with 32 Megs of RAM it has 50 % more
25:29 RAM than my first computer so any anyway
25:32 uh if you had a program that scaled linearly scaled perfectly if if you did
25:38 if if you did huge if if you did it
25:41 would be the equivalent of having a 40 GHz CPU in your system which is bananas
25:46 ridiculous it requires ddr4 server RAM did I mention we're getting two of them
25:50 so we're putting two of those in super
25:53 mic Pro and ASUS are are battling it out for who's going to have the motherboard
25:57 in our system I'm kind of tempted to just ask them both to send them and then
26:00 if the super micro one's good and has 10 GB onboard Lan which is a big deal for
26:05 me cuz we're going 10 gbit in the uh in the new office if it's good and it's
26:09 good then maybe the super micro wins it but the ASUS one is ASUS and there's
26:15 that trust there I've never really used super micro products extensively in the
26:19 past although it's server stuff I mean I
26:22 use super micro stuff it's really solid I haven't used it as much as a Seuss but
26:26 JJ made some compelling Arguments for some extra features they have in the ufi
26:30 I know it's JJ but JJ also isn't just
26:34 full crap I'm not saying he is was saying JJ could make compelling
26:37 Arguments for anything and they would probably be true
26:41 but that's the thing is JJ finds the
26:45 value JJ finds the way way

28:18 Premiere and to a greater extent After Effects have a feature called render
28:23 Farm feature whatever you want to call it scw screw you you can make a render
28:26 Farm okay so they Port render Farms
28:29 which basically allows you to take a folder and that designate that as a
28:33 watch folder so then what you do is you drop a project file into that folder and
28:39 any any render Farm machines are going to watch that folder and they're going
28:42 to go hey that's a project I haven't rendering I better go render that now so
28:46 the idea is that even though everyone here has like pretty powerful
28:50 workstations still need them six Core Extreme editions uh 32 gigs of RAM all
28:55 that stuff certain projects and bring
28:58 them to their knees like Ed was rendering out a project the other day
29:02 that he had to disable his Quadro for some reason and only used the Titans in
29:08 order to render out this project and then he was he was he was saturating his
29:14 1 GB land connection as well so there is a reason that we're moving to 10 GB land
29:19 on all the workstations properly this time and uh and that we are building
29:25 that 24 SSD raray server that's going to
29:29 be for everyone to work off of at the same time and then this render farm
29:32 machine is so that no matter what those guys are rendering out no matter what it

30:33 are you completely insane you don't have a centralized you're using Thunderbolt
30:37 Thunderbolt is not a proper solution for
30:41 professional use that's like prosumer and being marketed as professional use
30:45 I've I've never been a proponent of Thunderbolt for like video editors and
30:51 creative professionals that's that's local storage that's just like USB with
30:57 like old tin foil wrapped around it's like it's like a dressed up still it's
31:03 it's it's like fire wire it's the addition Edition it's USB cable yeah
31:06 it's new fire wire it's I don't I don't view that as a way to work especially in
31:12 a team environment where you want to be able to share resources like the fact
31:16 that now we have a PCI Express SSD in
31:20 our current server that everyone can put their caching files on has sped up the
31:25 workflow dramatically whenever someone needs to load someone else 's project
31:29 instead of storing all those files locally on their own machines or on a USB drive or some stupid thing like that
31:35 they fire the file up just like that they can open up the project instead of
31:38 waiting for the uh for the audio to conform or whatever else the case may be
31:43 so I'm really excited at about the
31:46 potential to centralize all of our data
31:50 and all of our processing as much as we possibly can um so I want to go back to
31:56 actually the topic that we were talking about before anyway that's just kind of teasing the the 36 coreon thing that I'm

32:30 it's not really that so going way this
32:34 is like such a cool chart have you seen this yes yeah fantastic so it goes all
32:38 the way from Q3 2003 and you know what I
32:41 love about the timing of this my first graphics card was a 9600
32:47 Pro I had was it a 9600 XT I had something
32:53 from back then so this was the first discreet graphics card that I ever
32:58 bought with my own money so this is like the entire history of as long as I've
33:01 been paying attention so while we go through here actually maybe I'll point
33:05 out all the cards I've ever owned because that might be kind of fun but um
33:08 basically it shows the market share percentages for AMD versus NVIDIA
33:14 historically across all these years so if you look the only time AMD was ever
33:20 ahead of NVIDIA was in like just after
33:24 what I would consider to be their golden age when they were Rising you know the
33:27 9500 non-pro you know IM memory
33:31 configuration soft modding days so uh
33:34 back around the time of the x800 series x850 series they had a really strong
33:40 period here when NVIDIA completely crapped the bed with the 50 uh 5000
33:44 series so that that kind of that kind of took you can see that these things take
33:49 a little while yeah to even kick in too because NVIDIA came back with 6,800
33:54 which were very good cards and that's still it's amazing how slow ception is
33:58 to catch up to the actual products in the market anyway that's neither here
34:01 nor there AMD was ahead for a period of
34:05 looks like about a year and then since
34:09 then it's actually been kind of frightening I mean even at times when
34:13 AMD has had very very compelling products like I personally really liked
34:18 the 3870 thought that was a great product and if we go back and we find uh
34:23 find where that launched so here's the X2 which we put yeah 3870 right here AMD
34:28 was limping along with 37% market share
34:31 at that time and that was when 3870 was up against um up against I guess
34:38 90 80 8,800 cards so the 8,800 you know
34:41 what curiously I can't find the 8800 GT on this stupid thing which is like the
34:46 most important card that existed within this era I'm not even going to lie
34:50 that's the only thing I've been looking for yeah it's I don't think I found GTS
34:54 yeah yeah I found GTS I found 9800 GT which is the same card yeah um but
35:00 anyway that's neither here Norther there so anyway you go along and you kind of
35:03 go AMD's been doing okay you know 35 to
35:08 40% market share this is what's happened in the last couple of
35:12 quarters that is some terrifying stuff right there what incentive does NVIDIA
35:18 have to continue to improve anything when they have 76% market share because
35:22 let me tell you guys the way business works is you invest in areas where you
35:29 see growth for your company which is why
35:32 uh was what was it the W show in Japan yeah W in Japan all did I even talk
35:36 about this on the show or did I just talk about this to the Omron guys the investment that NVIDIA has been
35:42 doing and like the fact that Elon Musk went to one of their conferences because
35:45 they've been working on Tegra for cars yep a huge Focus for them has been stuff
35:50 for cars because what are they going to do sell another 24% more widgets be a
35:55 monopoly and all of a sudden have to deal with a bunch of antitrust nonsense
35:59 and Monopoly Monopoly laws like that
36:02 there isn't even really any incentive for them to to to push any harder
36:06 against AMD like at all they don't they don't want them to just go out of
36:10 business tomorrow I'm fairly certain that would be bad um so I forget where I
36:15 was going with this right so is it any great mystery that in spite of AMD
36:20 having cards that on paper look pretty
36:24 good for the dollar um that they're doing poorly people refuse to buy them
36:29 so everyone out there collectively is not buying the cards and that's why
36:33 that's why AMD is in the situation that they're that they're in today um let's
36:39 go ahead and uh I I do want to do that thing though why don't we uh why don't
36:42 you and I each pick out pick out all the all the cards that we had over the years
36:45 my problem is some of the earlier ones were not my computer specifically they
36:51 were like family computers I can just do it then my first dedicated computer had
36:54 an 8800 GTS okay which here quite a bit
36:58 later all right well yeah I I had earlier cards like I had a 9600 I think
37:03 XT but those were in family computers so my first card was an all-in Wonder 9600
37:08 Pro yeah sick from there I upgraded to
37:12 an x800 Pro so I think that's right around
37:16 here from there I went to an x850 Pro
37:20 which uh should be somewhere in here even if it's not listed there from there
37:24 I went to an x850 XT Platinum Edition so
37:27 so there there oh no uh it's an 850 XT
37:31 Platinum Edition yep there it is X uh from there I went to a 7800 GT from
37:39 there I had a 78 I had two 7,800 gtx's at one point I picked them up off a guy
37:44 who was selling them for way too little I ran in my system for 3 days and then I
37:48 was like afraid to hold them anymore because I literally didn't have that
37:51 kind of money at the time so I needed to flip them I just bought them so I could
37:56 like game like that have the experience
38:00 and I got rid of those things right away you make money off it though yeah yeah I
38:04 made money um so then I went to I had uh
38:08 what was it yeah I didn't go from I
38:11 didn't upgrade the 78 you know what I had a 6800 GT for a few days as well I
38:15 bought a chain tech one back when like chain Tech
38:19 existed um I was kind of I was actually kind of a kind of an AMD guy like back
38:24 in the back in the earlier days like the cards that actually stayed in my rig
38:28 were generally AMD until I went to a 7900 GT and then I went to two of those
38:34 and then I went to 27950 GTS in SLI that
38:38 was my that was my SLI era from there I went to 28800 GTS 320 Megs from there I
38:44 went to two 8800 GTS 640 Meg cards from
38:49 there I went toay 8000 series for a little while I I stuck with the 8000
38:53 series for quite some time and then you know what I actually down dowed from a
38:58 full desktop okay and then I went with a small machine for a bit and I threw a
39:03 3870 in it cuz didn't you have I thought
39:06 you had that crazy 8800 GTX with the wrong cooler on it or something uh what
39:12 was that wrong cooler on it or was it the right cooler can't remember the crazy blower
39:17 one that was too tall oh oh that I don't
39:20 remember what the that card that wasn't a personal rig card okay yeah that was a
39:25 card okay um so then I went with a 387 and the reason for that was dtec had
39:30 their Fusion gfx which was perfectly
39:33 compatible with the built-in um like unisync that was already on the 3870 so
39:39 all you had to do was buy a GPU only water block and I had a liquid cooled
39:43 Silverstone Sugo sgo1 where I dremeled out the top of the case and put a 320 mm
39:48 rat on the top ran the tubes down the back and then inside through a couple of
39:52 holes that I drove that was a pretty cool little rig but the problem was that
39:56 it just was too l so from there I went
40:01 to let's see 3870 I want to say I went
40:05 to GTX 260 from there I had a 260 in my
40:08 mineral oil rig for a really long time four or five years then I went to two
40:13 260s then I think I stuck with that for
40:17 quite some time because not a whole lot came out for a while my wife actually
40:22 still has a 5870 Infinity Edition that was a really cool card like back then
40:27 six mini DisplayPort outputs are you freaking kidding me I mean the the tech
40:32 demos they did with it were stupid because that card I mean even old games
40:39 that card couldn't drive six 1080p displays and actually game not to
40:44 mention that gaming on six displays is dumb because you've got a bezel right
40:49 down the middle of everything no matter what it's just you either have like this
40:54 crazy long one right down the middle this way or you have a whole bunch
40:57 vertically and remember ifinity and portrait didn't exist back then so there
41:01 was no five displays in portrait so the card just like didn't make an ounce of
41:06 sense um so from there I want to say I
41:11 went to a single single
41:18 470 or something along those lines then I had a my next card was a
41:24 480 here it gets blurry because this is where I started uh this is where I
41:29 started being pretty heavy into NC Tech tips and so the line between what card
41:35 was in my rig and what card was on the bench was very blurry
41:39 so it's true uh so so personal like
41:43 personal rig card at that time I've got
41:47 to say was it a 580 I think I had a 580
41:50 at some point I had a 590 at one point I
41:53 know I know that um and then and then I
41:57 went Titan from there and so so you can
42:00 tell that I used to be one of those guys that was upgrading their graphics card
42:05 every single time something new dropped and something that I thought was really
42:09 interesting about this graph going uh going back to again actually I'm just
42:13 going to drop us on there one more time is look at all these
42:18 cards look at the density of cards and
42:22 then all of a sudden starts to thin out a lot 2011 hits and it just kind of went
42:28 away yeah it used to be really fun to
42:32 upgrade your graphics card every six months and like there's bigger changes
42:35 too huge changes like the the the the lack of density here is also important
42:41 in something that doesn't show in the graph which is the amount of improvement between the Cards compared to some jumps
42:46 previously yeah I mean the 5700 Ultra is
42:49 basically a DirectX 8 card let's let's not kid ourselves um the 5950 is like
42:55 barely dx9 barely NVIDIA abandoned that
42:59 thing so fast that Hardware was like bad
43:03 that was that that 5,000 series stuff was some bad hardware and then so you
43:10 you jump ahead to uh First Direct X1
43:14 card what was that the 8800 GTX if I recall correctly uh oh no it might it
43:19 might have actually been the 2900 XT who was first but I don't remember I don't
43:23 remember anyway so so that that era
43:27 that that is like that is huge differences in the way the graphics
43:31 cards work I mean that's that's going from a graphics card just being for
43:35 video games to a graphics card being for video games and even the beginning of
43:40 Cuda I mean look at all the Innovations what happens here and then now we have

45:30 things that are notable about this number one is the design looks an awful

45:41 you're right and you could make the argument that the Apple watch looks very similar to every other bloody thing that
45:45 strapped to your wrist and told you the time since the dawn of time itself um so
45:49 so you know like I get that but it really does look very similar ites if
45:53 you put the crown on it took away Theus logo you you could tell me that an Apple
45:57 Watch yeah I'd be like oh yeah it's not
46:01 gold that's weird they didn't spend enough money on it yeah exactly is it
46:05 the addition Edition or no so there's a couple cool things about this one um
46:09 number one is that actually it looks very classy um it looks as classy as the
46:13 Apple watch um not quite to my personal taste I actually very much prefer the
46:18 more utilitarian look of something like the LG watchr um and if I'm going to go
46:23 with something that looks a little bit nicer I don't I I like something a
46:26 little more Industrial looking and square like the like the Pebble Steel um
46:30 a lot of people have remarked that I'm back to the Pebble Steel not for any
46:34 particular reason other than that I dropped my G watchr charger and it's
46:38 proprietary and I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet so I broke it um so
46:42 yeah there's that really sucks and you know what going back to the Pebble Steel
46:45 after having been away from it for so long has made me realize they've made a
46:49 lot of improvements for one thing it's really Snappy now like it's like really
46:54 responsive now yeah um
46:58 and two as much as I really like Android
47:01 Weare and I'm going to go back to Android Weare at the earliest opportunity because I really like being
47:06 able to interact via voice for quick text responses and stuff like that um as
47:11 much as I like Android Wear I don't feel
47:14 like the way that it's integrated with
47:18 Android um really has that much of a value right
47:23 now I think that I think that Pebble in
47:27 spite of their proprietary third-party operating system is able to give me as
47:33 compelling a value if the hardware was better and I'm really excited to check
47:36 out the pebble time if the hardware was better they're able to give me a very
47:40 compelling experience even though you know they don't tie directly into iOS
47:44 the way that an Apple Watch would or directly into Android the way that an
47:48 Android were watch would let's not let's not get them too uh too stoked yet let's
47:52 just kind of stash it here for now but yes we will definitely be doing that uh
47:56 put that on Luke's shelf it's a replacement for the giveaway one um okay
48:01 so anyway 10day battery life so that that leads me really well into the other
48:05 exceptional thing about the Vivo watch so it's going to be a very Fitness oriented thing which I personally give
48:10 exactly zero cares about um but what I think is interesting is that it's not
48:14 Android oriented things not Android Wear
48:17 this time oh
48:20 so that's not to I don't know that I don't know that ASUS is like my sort has
48:26 the track record as far as building their own operating for systems
48:30 operating systems for things goes um but
48:34 I am a little bit more we don't like the
48:38 AI Suite thing so much but the ufi setup
48:42 is quite good that's true so that's a very
48:45 different I don't know it could be fine that's true so it could be fine I'm
48:49 reserving judgment but the point was if I hadn't gone back to the Pebble Steel

52:00 three other very important pieces of this as well I don't know if I told you
52:04 that those this is is this the it's more
52:07 oh it's just more ssds it's even more oh
52:11 so you can make one huge pile Oh my God

52:17 I'll try to stack them all now it's it's
52:20 more as he just said so now I'm going to try to stack them in the like space
52:24 saving way so I'm going to stack them like this which is really the density of
52:29 one even though it's two so I want to point that out real quick and then I'm
52:32 going to try and stack all okay now I play Minecraft with
52:39 ssds so this is actually a really
52:42 important part of the puzzle as well uh
52:46 now normally when you do an SSD raid array you reach the you reach an
52:52 internal bottleneck on your controller or PCI Express before you can actually
52:58 run out of you know SATA ports to plug
53:01 oh more and more solid state drives into because these things are so high
53:04 performance I mean each of these is good for in the neighborhood of half a
53:08 Gigabyte per second so you go ahead and
53:12 you throw 24 of them in an array and we're talking 12 gabes per second of
53:17 theoretical raw read and write speeds what what can handle that kind of
53:23 bandwidth so you're not going to be using your onboard SATA controller on
53:26 your motherboard or anything like that so we actually got not
53:33 one not two but
53:38 three LSI Mega raade 9271 8i uh SAS
53:44 cards uh although they'll be running in SATA mode with these particular ssds but
53:48 uh these are so we have three separate raid controllers so we can overcome the
53:53 internal bottlenecking of even a high-end Standalone RAID controller card
53:59 usually isn't really a problem once you get to the raid the the like dedicated
54:03 card it's usually fine it's usually just when it's on the motherboard that you
54:07 potentially have an issue with Magnetic drives yeah you're going to run into
54:10 bottlenecks pretty quick I mean you start adding more than three ssds to an
54:14 Intel onboard raid solution and you're not you're not going to be getting
54:18 that's what I'm saying ssds on onboard can still cap it pretty quick but those
54:21 you don't usually cap cards very quickly so this is going to be sick um this is
54:26 is going to be uh basically I think what I'm going to go with is a 20 tbte raid
54:32 six with a hot spare and then we actually had Kingston send 25 that's you
54:36 Shug when you said hot spare you know whatever hot spare SSD whatever um so
54:42 for those of you who don't know a hot spare allows the array to be rebuilt
54:46 automatically if one of the drives were to fail or drop out of the array for
54:49 whatever reason and then we actually had them send 25 so we're going to have a
54:53 cold spare as well so if Drive fails and
54:57 the hot spare kicks in we pull that out we throw in the cold spare and we have
55:01 now a hot spare that our cold spare becomes now a lot of people talk about
55:06 how raid is sort of dead and and this is a conversation that gets brought up a
55:11 lot raid is dead for certain applications and it's it's amazing how
55:16 many people saw our 100 terabyte server
55:20 and said why are you running raid I never said I was running raid never once
55:25 did I say I was running raid and there was another thing IED an Instagram
55:28 picture ofing testing on it why are you running Windows on a file server I'm not
55:33 running Windows on a file server I'm running Windows on the client so that I
55:37 can transfer files because our clients are going to be Windows yeah because
55:42 they're video editing machines like the the fact that people just
55:46 assume that anyway so the point is the
55:49 problem with raid they should make the internet the assnet assum net the assum
55:54 net it's short for assnet
55:58 GTA you can steal that in your next game if you want so the problem with raid
56:02 bringing us back on topic is that if you have a drive fail and you've got let's
56:07 say each of your drives is 6 terabytes
56:10 like that uh like that 30 drive or 27 drive system that we have downstairs
56:14 each of your drives is 6 terabytes there is every so often the the laws of
56:22 probability state that you're going to have a bit flip and you're going to have
56:25 data corrup op and once your drives reach a certain capacity the odds of if
56:31 that drive fails trying to rebuild that drive without one of your other drives
56:36 failing during intensive reading become
56:39 so great that you'll basic you're basically guaranteed to have your array
56:44 fail just from trying to rebuild it every time now in practice we have not
56:49 found that to be the case we have we have a large 3 terb Drive array with
56:54 consumer like not the like I have refurb drives in there I'm a bad person we're
56:59 doing it properly this time though I promise um and we have rebuilt that
57:03 array lots of times and in theory you
57:06 know the the theory crafting mathematicians on the internet ton of
57:09 times would suggest that three terab
57:12 Drive is far too big for even a raid six
57:15 and blippity blo blo and the point is we've been lucky or it's fine um but one
57:21 way or another we are running ZFS 2 this time around so we have three pools of
57:28 nine drives Each of which can sustain two Drive failures and then the way that
57:32 ZFS handles rebuilding Drive failures is
57:35 different in such a way as you don't have the odds of the dries failing etc
57:39 etc so um yeah we're kind of doing everything properly this time but
57:43 bringing it back to the ssds these are low enough capacity and high enough
57:47 speed that you can rebuild an array extremely quickly on them and these are
57:53 only for our like our actual daily work server we are going to be doing thanks
57:58 to all the io that we're going to have with these bad boys like I am expecting
58:03 multiple gigabytes per second of raw
58:07 performance from this array with all the io we're going to have we're going to
58:10 have another server uh like another Pool somewhere Elsewhere on the network
58:15 connected via 10 gigabit that is going to be doing we haven't decided exactly
58:19 how often but maybe hourly dumps from the SSD array that everyone's working
58:23 off of at the same time cuz it's going to have Mt iops I'm not going to go too
58:27 far into it cuz none of it solidified but with that new system that you and I were just talking about it can be like
58:32 way faster you think so like all the time really yeah well there you go so
58:37 we're going to have I don't know I I should just go straight up raid zero on
58:40 it then no I shouldn't that's really stupid 24 Drive raid zero is straight
58:45 stupid with that said my eight Drive raid zero in my personal
58:51 rig did it it it's it's it's is that you still have that right 100% fine yeah
58:55 exactly yeah but it's these are actually going to be used in a way that my
58:59 personal ring doesn't get used like they're going to be hammered so that's a

60:30 AOSP they can Fork their own Android and
60:33 you know what then they don't get the Play Store you know what then they don't
60:37 get to take advantage of the ecosystem that's business yeah I
60:46 mean yeah I mean Google's whole thing is

60:53 our services with it it's like here's uh I saw a really good example I think it
60:57 was in the comments on the blog here you know it's like if a shop is like you
61:00 know here's free ice cream if you shop in our store it's like well we don't
61:05 want to shop in your store so we just want the ice cream well that's not how
61:10 that works or or to go to the washroom you have to buy something yeah it's like
61:15 you don't have to use our washroom you can go make your own
61:19 bathroom which probably I don't recommend but anyway the point is couple
61:23 good quotes from here so the European commission has has asked questions about
61:26 our partner agreements these are quotes from the Google Blog it's important to remember that these are voluntary
61:30 partner agreements with that said they the word on the street is that they have
61:35 been kind of Hardline about how the partner agreements work and whether you
61:39 can make the secret Google Club thing
61:42 yeah the whole secret Google Club thing um so if the EU kind of blows that open
61:47 a little bit and we find out Google has been doing uncompetitive things and this
61:50 is a whole other ball of wax but right now Google is very much on the defensive
61:54 they're talking about how anti fragmentation agreements ensure that apps work across all different sorts of
61:59 Android devices whether it's a phone or a TV box or streaming device or whatever
62:03 else the case may be um our app distribution agreements make sure people
62:07 get a great outof the-box experience with useful apps on the home screen
62:11 right there so part of Google's requirements that you're going to have to have your your Gmail and your Chrome
62:16 browser and all that stuff right on the home screen something that doesn't
62:19 personally bother me like it's are we going to tell Apple they can't have
62:23 Safari on the iPhone I don't care Apple's going to be like right there
62:28 buddy we're going to put Safari wherever we want to and that is different and I
62:33 know please do not flood my inbox I know
62:36 apple is not entering an agreement with a handset maker to blippity bloopity I
62:41 get it but the point is that to control the end user experience and I don't mean
62:45 control I mean protect the end user experience because quite frankly the
62:50 kind of software that the handset makers
62:53 and the carriers will load on your phone if Google doesn't push Chrome and Gmail
62:57 down your throat is a lot worse um
63:00 historically I forget where I was going with this anyway the point is yes it's
63:04 different but I don't necessarily object to it as long as Google's applications
63:07 are better but that's where the whole
63:10 antitrust thing comes in and allegedly Google is using their position as a
63:15 dominant player to not allow anyone to try anything better and not you know um
63:21 not give smaller application makers a chance to compete yeah so we'll be I'll
63:26 be following this I'll be really interested to see if we end up with like
63:29 a version of Android with no Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger um or maybe
63:35 with Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger remember that was the result of the
63:38 Windows antitrust yeah I was like what did you even yeah that was a little bit

64:38 the street the battery has to be installed at 1.5 ft above the ground and
64:41 should have an open space of one feet on each side that's a third of a meter for
64:45 the uh Europeans um or half of a meter for the
64:49 first part the battery does not make any noise does not need any maintenance and
64:53 has no drippings that's good it has probably DPP for a battery that would be
64:57 horrible the battery includes an inverter so you can take your AC power
65:00 and charge the battery it's about 3T tall and 2 and 1/2 ft wide so it's about
65:04 1 meter by. five of a meter or four four
65:07 fths of a meter excuse me and looks good and the installer offered a choice
65:11 apparently between a 10 KW hour battery and a 15 KW hour battery pricing for the
65:16 10 kwatt hour is said to be in the $113,000 US range not too shabby if you
65:24 are really smart like uh this this strapping young man
65:29 yeah the one owner is apparently charging his battery at night when
65:34 electricity is cheaper in the area and then selling it back to his utility
65:38 company during peak hours for a profit estimated 12 to15 a month pretty much
65:43 covering the monthly amortised cost of the battery which you can buy on a
65:46 10-year payment plan yeah wow you put down about 1,500 bucks uh it will then
65:52 be about monthly $15 a month for 10 years something along those lines yeah
65:57 but then if you do that sell it back thing it might be nothing yeah which is
66:02 kind of awesome that's kind of smart yeah um yeah very very cool and I mean
66:06 just the idea of do we remember how long these are going to run your home no I
66:11 can't remember anymore I remember when we were initially talking about this and I can't do the 10 or 15 wat hour math

82:14 licensing agreements that are in place for television and or movie programming
82:19 so a popular usage model for vpns is
82:22 accessing us Netflix which is infinitely better than every other Netflix combined
82:26 with the exception of I've heard the UK is okay but I haven't I haven't really
82:30 used it much so tvz and Sky TV networks
82:35 claim that by offering VPN service call plus and bypass Network Services are
82:41 complicit in customers watching overseas content I don't really see how it's any
82:45 of anyone's business what you know if
82:49 you're a VPN company I I really I really don't understand I'm with call plus and
82:54 BNS here it's none of our business what our customers are accessing through the
82:58 VPN the entire reason they're using a VPN is for their privacy yes and
83:02 basically they're the only two it appears or at least they're the only two
83:06 major ones that refused to stop offering
83:11 that service to their customers apparently most of the other VPN services in New Zealand
83:16 complied um with the with the TV networks putting pressure on them to not
83:21 allow that to be done by their users very interesting
83:25 I mean this is something that is going to come to a head and this is something
83:28 that I I think the I think the TV networks are going to win this one
83:32 because you look they're going to keep putting pressure I mean okay the thing
83:35 is is that these are the same companies that control the licensing deals for the

83:42 going to be like Netflix is going to be like oh we can't stop it and they're
83:46 going to be like figure it out and that's going to be that I think
