0:00 so you've been waiting for AMD ryzen now
0:04 you've seen what it can do you're ready to do your best impression of Philip J
0:08 fry but wait AMD has left the keys in
0:13 the proverbial ignition and decided to
0:16 keep their frequency multipliers unlocked so could you potentially save
0:21 yourself a hundred bucks going for the
0:25 1700x instead of the 1800x and get the
0:28 same performance I always recommend that before you start
0:33 haggling with your local CPU dealer you
0:36 take her out for a test drive so let's do that then shall we Welcome to our AMD
0:42 ryzen 7 overclocking
0:54 Guide G fuel is the sugar-free energy drink formula that can help you maintain
0:59 Focus during long work dayss and gaming sessions use offer code Linus to save
1:04 40% for a limited time so since we don't have to spend
1:10 extra on a special unlocked CPU to
1:13 enable overclocking we can use any
1:17 motherboard with an AMD x370 or b350
1:21 chipset like our x370 based ASUS Crosshair 6 cool but what CPU should we
1:29 buy well AMD's own guidance indicates
1:32 that non-x chips aren't expected to
1:35 overclock as well so The Logical course
1:39 of action appears to be to just crank up
1:42 the clocks on a 1700x and save ourselves a cnote but is
1:47 it really going to be that easy in theory yes but it's complicated by the
1:53 fact that ryzen doesn't give you very
1:56 much control while you do have dead
2:00 simple access to change the multiplier and the base clock the means by which
2:05 the clock speed or frequency of a CPU is
2:08 derived both in the BIOS and in AMD's
2:11 ryzen master software you can't
2:14 simultaneously enable AMD's automatic
2:17 turbo functionality Precision boost
2:21 ryzen immediately locks to the clock speed and voltage that you set meaning
2:27 that if you want to actually match the potential of an 1800x your 1700x will
2:33 have to be able to do up to 4.1 GHz all
2:37 day long not an easy task considering
2:40 even the 1800x will only hit 4.1 with
2:44 xfr under certain workloads out of the box so let's get down to it then and see
2:50 if our 1700x has what it takes using our
2:54 usual ryzen bench and a 1080ti we'll Venture first into the BIOS for for the
3:00 greatest degree of control simply by
3:03 setting the multiplier to 40 and the vcor voltage to
3:07 1.375 we managed a stable overclock of 4
3:11 GHz over the 1700 X's stock 3.4 GHz base
3:16 frequency not bad for a CPU that's only
3:19 supposed to boost to 3.9 using
3:23 xfr sadly though we couldn't push any
3:27 further even if we cranked the voltage to
3:30 AMD's recommended maximum of 1.45 volts
3:35 we're not sure why this is exactly but even when we dove into more advanced
3:40 base clock overclocking we were only able to eek out an extra 100 MHz on the
3:46 CPU not really worth the time or effort
3:51 the same was true of our 1800x which tells us that at least for our chips the
3:56 limiting factor may be elsewhere
4:00 armed with this knowledge we now know the relevant voltages and frequencies we
4:05 need in order to perform an overclock first the CPU multiplier shown in our
4:10 BIOS as CPU core ratio this works in
4:14 increments of 0.25 and by default ranges from 22 to
4:20 63.75 You'll generally want to ignore
4:23 custom CPU core ratio but if you do use
4:26 it you'll be greeted by a multiplier called fi ID and a divider called did
4:32 which go from 16 to 255 and 8 to 48
4:35 respectively to be clear the only reason
4:39 you would want this kind of control is if you were base clock overclocking so
4:44 you can access it with AI overclock tuner but quite frankly we don't really
4:50 recommend it because it adjusts other sensitive system frequencies like PCI
4:55 Express for no realworld performance
4:58 benefit one useful thing you can do with
5:02 the AI overclock tuner is set what ASUS calls docp which is fancy talk for Dr
5:09 overclock profiles like Intel's
5:12 XMP now in the future you'll be able to use this to set your high-speed RAM to
5:18 the correct frequency and timings automatically which is key because ryzen
5:23 really does seem to perform better the higher you can crank the memory speed
5:28 and the lower you can get the timings
5:31 but bear in mind that most RAM right now
5:34 is tuned for Intel platforms so you'll need to shop for special memory to be
5:39 able to take advantage of this
5:43 and we actually didn't have a ton of success running even the memory that AMD
5:48 provided or one of these AMD specific memory kits any higher than 2666
5:55 megahertz so your mileage May
5:58 significantly vary as far as that goes
6:01 in any case it's likely you'll end up manually keying in your RAM timings to
6:06 get them as low as you can before hitting a wall moving on to voltages our
6:12 main concern is V cor shown here as CPU
6:16 core voltage by default when you set an overclock ryzen will snap to a rather
6:22 strange arbitrary voltage of
6:26 13625 as for what to set it to we found
6:29 that 1.375 is the sweet spot for overclocking
6:33 with high-end air cooling while ASUS recommends no higher than 1. 1425 with
6:40 strong liquid cooling drram voltage
6:43 defaults to 1.2 but most higher end kits
6:46 are asking for about 1.35 if you do adjust this you'll want
6:51 to tweak the CPU s so voltage whose
6:54 default is 0.99 turning this voltage up can improve
6:59 memory overclocking and for us did seem to help with stability you'll also want
7:04 to set your memory termination voltage in our case labeled VT DDR in Tweakers
7:09 Paradise to half of your Dam voltage if
7:14 you're trying out base clock overclocks then you can also find Sensi skew here
7:19 which you'll want to enable Force stability though again we really don't
7:22 recommend this pH okay so we're overclocked how
7:28 does it run well thanks to the Crosshair 6's am3 mounting holes we can test not
7:34 only our am4 based Noctua u12s and
7:37 Cooler Master hyper 212 plus but also our Corsair h100i all-in-one water
7:43 cooler so we can give you guys a good idea of what to expect pretty much
7:47 across the board for temperatures under Ida 64's stability test our hyper 212
7:53 plus managed 82° which I would consider to be acceptable while our Noctua ran at
7:58 83 .5 so that's warmer but it should be
8:01 noted that this was with a much quieter fan our h100i meanwhile managed to keep
8:08 things down to a cozy 74 1
8:11 12° if you want to compare these results to your own bear in mind that currently
8:16 AMD's ryzen X Series CPUs are reporting
8:20 temperatures a whole 20° higher than they actually are in some applications
8:25 we took our readings from AMD's own ryzen Master software though so they
8:30 should be accurate as for performance at
8:34 4 GHz our 1700x sits at the top of the
8:38 x-class rise and lineup for FPS per dollar at 1080p a likely Target for all
8:44 of you out there buying High refresh rate monitors games like DSX mankind
8:49 divided rise of the Tomb Raider for Honor GTA 5 and doom all showed close or
8:57 better performance synthetics like like 7zip PC Mark y cruncher cinebench and
9:03 real bench all showed the overclock mostly meeting or exceeding the 1800x
9:10 sometimes by a wide margin so combining
9:13 these scores and average FPS well it
9:16 gets extremely close to the core i7 7700
9:20 K's performance per dollar in many ways actually the
9:25 overclocked ryzen 7 1700x reminds me of
9:29 the XP 2500 plus it wasn't the fastest
9:33 CPU on the market but it was fast enough
9:37 for most uses and could be counted on to consistently overclock about as high as
9:42 AMD's topof the line and more expensive
9:45 3200 plus back then on top of that like
9:49 the 2500 plus it's priced just right for
9:52 a wide range of users consumers
9:55 prosumers and Gamers so in short while
9:59 some enthusiasts might have hoped that ryzen
10:03 would overclock like a bat out of hell and be a return to the Athlon 64 in X2
10:08 days with AMD on top of the performance Heap that isn't what we got but hey a
10:15 chance to relive the Athlon XP days
10:18 that's not too shabby either so thanks for watching guys if this video sucked
10:23 you know what to do but if it was awesome get subscribed hit that like button maybe consider checking out where
10:27 to buy your own ryen CPU and motherboard
10:30 at the link in the video description also down there is our merch store and
10:35 our community forum both of which you should totally check out
