0:00 the Windows 10 fall creators update is here and with it comes a bunch of mixed
0:05 reality stuff like paint 3d and the
0:08 mixed reality viewer along with some new
0:12 partner developed hardware to support these mixed reality experiences and that
0:19 is what we're checking out today the acer Windows mixed reality headset
0:24 is the first of a wave of compatible headsets all of
0:30 which have similarly brutal names but just what is so mixed about it and at
0:36 four hundred dollars can it compete with incumbent vr
0:40 heavyweights like the htc vive and oculus rift
0:52 the meteor xr series from roseville features a black exterior with white
0:57 interior accents a detachable five and a quarter inch bay and more check it out
1:02 at the link below okay first things first the acer Windows mixed reality
1:07 heads you know what i'm just gonna call it armor looks more like a mixed reality
1:12 play set its glossy plastic finish can
1:15 best be described as power rangers-esque and its overall feel
1:19 is less premium than either the rift or
1:23 the vive i mean nobody ever looks cool with clunky
1:26 headgear but this one is probably among the uncoolest that i've
1:32 seen yet and it has some issues with fit as well
1:36 the padding around the goggles plugged the nostrils of almost everyone in the
1:40 office who tried it and the headset's sole adjustment point which to their
1:45 credit is super easy to use tightens the headband without pulling
1:50 the goggles themselves closer to your face
1:53 so it's designed this way so that you can
1:57 flip the goggles up which is great for taking a quick look
2:01 at the real world or having a conversation with a colleague but the
2:05 result is that the bottom edge of the goggles is further from your face than
2:09 it needs to be making it difficult to get everything perfectly in focus
2:14 let's talk screen now compared to the rift and the vive armor uses a
2:19 significantly higher resolution screen
2:22 2880x1440 this results in a noticeably
2:26 sharper image and reduced though still noticeable screen
2:31 door effect with that said don't get too excited unlike the rift in the vive
2:36 armor uses an lcd display instead of an
2:40 OLED display so even just wandering around in virtual
2:44 space there is noticeable smearing behind even moderate speed objects with
2:49 the effect most noticeable against contrasting backgrounds almer's biggest
2:53 claim to fame though is its inside out tracking so what this means is that the
2:58 system's awareness of its position is all done in the helmet itself
3:04 rather than having it rely on a constellation of motion trackers placed
3:08 strategically around your desk this means that setup time
3:13 a significant pain point with other solutions now takes just a couple of
3:17 minutes but this does come with some drawbacks
3:21 if the controllers are moved beyond the field of view of the front-facing
3:25 cameras they may glitch out for a second while they recalibrate
3:29 and well traditional
3:32 outside-in tracking will always be more accurate especially if you're using
3:37 three or more satellites so this
3:40 combined with the lcd display already
3:43 disqualifies armor for gamers and probably high level content creators on
3:48 the subject of the controllers let's take a look at them you can actually
3:52 save a hundred bucks if you don't want them but a lot of the experiences
3:56 definitely worked better with them they're designed by microsoft so you can
4:00 expect other upcoming mixed reality headsets to use them and
4:05 overall while they won't win any ergonomic awards your thumb rests sort
4:11 of between the trackpad and the joystick rather than on either of them and the
4:16 handles don't taper toward the end for some reason the build quality is okay
4:22 and they're small light and pretty simple to use i'm actually genuinely a
4:27 little annoyed though that they use double a batteries rather than charging
4:30 over usb that said the fact that the Windows home
4:34 button takes you to a literal Windows home definitely delights me
4:39 okay then i'm glad to hear you're delighted Linus
4:42 but so far all you've shown is a vr headset isn't
4:47 this the acer Windows mixed reality
4:51 headset how does armor let you interact with both the real world
4:56 and the virtual world at the same time
5:02 that is a long and wonderful question
5:06 it doesn't
5:10 no no there's there's no funny
5:13 punch line here it just doesn't
5:16 and i'll be honest with you this confused us a little bit too in fact
5:21 truthfully i i probably wouldn't have requested one of these from acer if i
5:25 had fully understood what it was or more
5:29 accurately what it wasn't so after some
5:32 digging it appears as though Windows mixed reality is more like
5:37 aspirational branding for a platform
5:40 that will eventually support ar vr
5:44 and mr tools like the microsoft hololens
5:48 then it is a description of the actual products that are labeled with it today
5:54 so despite the name headsets like this one are pretty much
5:59 last year's hardware with a higher resolution display
6:02 on next year's platform which makes it
6:05 kind of hard to understand why exactly someone would buy them back in april
6:09 when acer first announced this product pricing was going to be the big
6:14 advantage but then oculus hardcore used that facebook money to
6:19 kill that when they slashed the price of the rift which even includes headphones
6:24 and a bunch of games at the same price of 400
6:28 so should anyone buy this then
6:32 okay actually maybe inside out tracking
6:35 makes armor way more portable than other
6:38 flagship vr systems since there's no satellites to cart around and then stick
6:43 on tripods and then plug in the wall and then calibrate blah blah blah no it's
6:49 basically plug and play and there will be lots to play the theater experience
6:54 is legitimately better thanks to the intuitive navigation and higher pixel
6:58 density and by the end of the year wmr
7:01 will support steamvr so assuming your gaming rig has the horses you'll be able
7:06 to play most of the same games as everyone else with some tracking and
7:10 pixel response compromises so all told
7:13 then auburn isn't a terrible product
7:17 and for the person who needs portability it or samsung's upcoming OLED competitor
7:23 is a much better experience than a phone-based google cardboard or whatever
7:30 but for an enthusiast like me i mean i
7:33 was already a little disappointed when it didn't have the next-gen vr feel that
7:38 i would have expected over a year after the launch of the rift and the vive
7:43 and then when it didn't even begin to deliver on the promise that was right in the name
7:49 and didn't manage to undercut existing offerings enough to be a budget
7:54 alternative i mean that was just the cucumber icing
7:57 on a gluten-free cake so i'll be waiting to see what's coming from oculus and htc
8:02 in the coming months but before that happens i'll be telling
8:06 you guys about ting ting is the mobile
8:09 carrier that is focused on customer satisfaction that's right if you're on
8:13 ting you can actually pick up your phone which for some reason isn't in my pocket
8:17 i have this in my pocket here it is you can pick up your phone and you will get
8:21 put through directly to a person and you don't pay a premium for that kind of
8:25 service you actually pay only for what you use both minutes and data and the
8:31 average ting bill is just 23 bucks a month per device
8:34 if you're stuck in a contract and you switch to ting they'll cover 25 of your
8:38 cancellation fee up to 75 dollars and they've got lowered mobile data rates
8:42 data's just 10 dollars per gig beyond the first gig
8:46 so head over to Linus.ting.com try their savings calculator which will
