0:00 You might use a VPN for any number of reasons
0:03 from accessing region blocked content
0:05 to logging into your school's library from off campus
0:08 to obfuscating your IP address
0:10 when you're legally downloading backups
0:14 of your movies and games.
0:15 But did you know that a VPN can be used
0:18 to potentially save thousands of dollars
0:21 on your next airplane ticket?
0:23 We are gonna show you guys how in just a few seconds,
0:26 you can completely stymie the airlines algorithms
0:30 and get the best possible price for your next trip.
0:34 Oh, and by the way, it works for hotel and car rentals too.
0:38 Now, full disclosure,
0:40 this works with just about any VPN of your choosing,
0:43 but we will be using Private Internet Access VPN,
0:46 one of our sponsors here on the show.
0:48 So if you like what you see,
0:49 you can check them out at the link in the video description.
1:00 To demonstrate how airlines and flight booking services
1:03 show different search results
1:04 depending on who you are and where you're from,
1:09 we're gonna do a test where we book a flight
1:11 from London to Denver and see if we get different prices.
1:16 So the first thing we're gonna do
1:18 is our regular old search as if we live in London.
1:21 So if I type, show my location into Google,
1:25 it's telling me I'm in London.
1:27 Now, if I go to the Expedia UK site
1:29 and book a flight from LHR to DEN
1:32 for September 11th to 15th and choose business class,
1:35 the cheapest result I get is a direct flight
1:38 from Iberia Airlines for 5,935 pounds.
1:44 That's over 7,500 US dollars.
1:47 Pretty steep.
1:49 Okay, so now let's see if we can get a better price.
1:53 The first thing that you need to do
1:55 is clear the cookies from your browser.
1:57 Remember that cookies are messages
1:59 that web servers pass to your browser
2:02 as you surf the internet,
2:03 creating a record of your activity online.
2:05 Travel sites use cookies to help them drive ticket sales.
2:11 So if you search for a flight,
2:12 but then you leave without buying,
2:15 the cookies will tell them that,
2:16 and then the next time you search for that flight,
2:19 they might increase the price that you see
2:21 by maybe a small amount, 10, $20.
2:25 At that point, human psychology compels you
2:29 to buy the ticket right now out of fear
2:32 that the price will continue to go up.
2:34 Fortunately, we're not gonna have to worry about that.
2:35 Unfortunately, you can get browser extensions
2:37 that help you delete cookies as you go.
2:39 We're using auto cookie delete,
2:41 which clears all the cookies generated by a tab
2:44 as soon as you close it,
2:45 or it can dump them automatically as you browse.
2:48 Cool.
2:50 Next, we're gonna use our VPN
2:52 to make it look like we're browsing from somewhere else.
2:55 Now, there are differing theories
2:57 as to what the best location to book flights from is.
3:01 I've heard that booking from the US
3:03 always gets the best deal.
3:05 I've heard that booking from a less affluent place
3:07 like the Midwest instead of the coast,
3:09 or a less affluent country like India instead of Germany
3:13 is the way to go.
3:15 And then there are those who swear
3:17 that booking from the destination country is the best,
3:20 or even that it's the local currency
3:23 of the airline itself that matters.
3:26 Naturally, the only way to test these theories
3:28 is to run your own experiments.
3:30 And this is where your choice of VPN makes a difference,
3:35 because there's an amount of VPN that has servers
3:37 in lots of different locations all around the world.
3:42 So you can see that PIA has a decently long list here,
3:45 including some countries with multiple servers within them.
3:48 So, since we're flying from London to Denver,
3:51 I'm gonna choose the Denver server.
3:54 So now I'm going back to my browser,
3:57 making sure my cookies are cleared,
3:58 and now when I tell Google to show me my location,
4:01 you can see that it thinks I'm in Denver.
4:03 Going back to Expedia, and searching for the same thing,
4:05 or the same flight again, bam!
4:07 There's that same nonstop flight from Iberia Airlines,
4:11 this time for 49.16 US dollars instead of 7,700,
4:17 a full $2,800 cheaper.
4:22 That is all there is to it.
4:25 If you travel a lot,
4:26 obviously the savings can end up adding up pretty quickly.
4:30 For us, booking from the destination
4:32 definitely looks like a winning strategy,
4:34 but let us know in the comments below,
4:36 after you've tried it,
4:37 if you've had success with some other way.
4:40 Regardless of all of that,
4:41 having a good VPN is definitely worth it,
4:44 especially considering that this is only one
4:47 of the many things that a VPN can be used for,
4:50 and they're cheap.
4:51 PIA can be had for as little as $2.91 a month.
4:56 So be sure to check them out at the link below.
4:58 You only have to save $2,000 on a flight,
5:01 like once, to pay for an entire lifetime of PIA.
5:04 So guys, let us know if you disliked this video,
5:09 you can hit that button.
