0:00 whenever you click on an enticing Link in a web browser the website you're
0:03 looking at knows to send whatever the link contains to your computer and not
0:08 your neighbors because your computer sends its IP address kind of like a
0:13 return address on an envelope but as it turns out IP addresses only get you as
0:18 far as the modem you have in your house and these days most of us have tons of
0:23 things connected to our routers especially wirelessly phones laptops
0:27 tablets computers other people's phones
0:31 consoles CH casts oh and they're all
0:35 connected nearly all the freaking time
0:39 you don't really want to be thinking about it so how does your home networking equipment know to send those
0:44 questionable videos to you and not your
0:47 parents sitting in the Next Room well each device on your network has
0:52 something called a Mac Address yes even the PCS Mac in this case stands for
0:57 media access control it identifies which
1:00 device is which on your local network so
1:03 here's how they work when data arrives at your home from the worldwide internet
1:08 your router needs to decide which device to send that data to it does this by
1:12 keeping track of the Mac addresses of all the devices connected to it then
1:17 assigning what's called a private IP address usually starting with 1
1:22 192.168 to every device this is also why
1:25 you usually punch in those numbers to access your router's control panel
1:29 through your browser this is very different from a public IP which is what
1:34 the rest of the internet sees as being your IP address for your entire home
1:40 network and what comes up when you type what's my IP address into Google your
1:44 router keeps track of outbound requests such as when you click on a link so when
1:49 the data you want arrives at your router it attaches the correct private IP
1:53 address to the data packets ensuring that they got to your computer or device
1:58 since all those private IP correspond to the correct Mac Address now this might
2:03 understandably seem a little redundant since your computer now has both a
2:07 private IP and a Mac Address that can both individually identify it but in
2:11 reality you need both since although both the public and private IPS stay the
2:16 same throughout this process the Mac addresses on the data packets are
2:21 constantly being changed they only tell the data where to go for its next hop
2:26 when your data gets to the next device the Mac Address has changed in order to
2:30 tell it where to go well next since your data might go through numerous servers
2:34 and routers before it finally gets to your device Mac Address information is
2:39 crucial even though you have a private IP another upside of Mac addresses is
2:44 that normally they always stay the same with many devices having their Mac
2:48 addresses hardcoded into the firmware at the factory making it easy to spot a
2:53 malfunctioning device on the network if you're trying to troubleshoot and if you
2:57 want to protect your network by making it so that only devices that you approve
3:02 can connect many routers use Mac addresses to restrict access to known
3:07 devices very useful if you're worried someone might try to steal your Wi-Fi
3:11 password or even plug in physically isps
3:14 also use predefined Mac addresses to make it easy to provide you with the
3:18 service you paid for so that your neighbor isn't the one getting that
3:22 expensive gigabit connection that you're shelling out money for every month of
3:25 course they also use these to block access if you aren't paying your bills
3:30 however so type that as you will it is possible to spoof a Mac Address however
3:36 and you might want to if you're concerned about your privacy on a public
3:39 Wi-Fi connection or you connect a new device to your network that your ISP
3:43 might not recognize but be for warned that this might not make your ISP happy
3:48 depending on who they are actually who am I kidding it probably doesn't depend
