0:00 this video will blow your mind drop your
0:05 jaw and move your
0:09 bowels okay so maybe I oversold it a little bit this video is of the Fujitsu
0:13 scans snap 500 and it actually exists
0:17 not because I think this is the most exciting product in the world but rather
0:21 because we needed one for the office it's just a handy thing we use and you
0:25 lot told me I'm supposed to make videos about that kind of stuff so here we go
0:36 with its Factory tuning and data center DNA an Intel 730 series SSD is an
0:41 amazing choice for gamers and performance enthusiasts we actually have
0:45 a network scanner already one that was a lot cheaper but our business is growing
0:49 and our needs are changing so between walking back and forth only being able
0:53 to scan directly to two PCS maximum it's lack of double-sided scanning and it's
0:58 an ability to handle oddside paper without resorting to the flatbed we
1:02 wanted something faster and more flexible so in the Box for the 500 we
1:06 find a usb3 cable Fujitsu software Adobe
1:09 Acrobat 11 standard a carrier sheet more on that later and the scanner itself
1:14 resplendant in an improved black finish that makes it not look straight out of
1:17 the 90s like the S500 that I overviewed last time around on ncx Tech tips
1:22 software setup is also improved from last time it's much faster to install
1:26 but one big issue that remains is that if you don't want to use the included CD
1:31 you have to jump through a bunch of Hoops to download the handy management
1:35 utilities I really wish Fujitsu would come up with a different way of doing
1:38 this physically Fujitsu is going for a
1:42 so easy it only requires a one button approach here so you unfold it from its
1:47 compact storage mode and you'll find well just one button on the front
1:51 labeled scan on the back it's got a Kensington lock a power jack a usb3 port
1:56 a Wi-Fi toggle switch and a WPS button for easily adding it your network
2:00 wirelessly to scan to multiple PCS or
2:03 smartphones running iOS or Android but that's about it so the make or break
2:09 feature of this scanner is going to be how well the software works so let's
2:13 move on it took me a while to get used to this one button concept and the
2:17 different ways that you can use it so first up you can have the software
2:20 create a scans snap folder on your computer that temporarily hold stuff so
2:25 you can email it out or archive it from there and then that folder will just
2:29 automat magically clean everything up after a set number of days that's good
2:33 for certain types of work like administrative work but the way that I
2:37 like to use it better is to have it look for whatever device or window is active
2:42 then Target that with the scaned file so if card minder their business card
2:46 manager is up on my screen it'll it'll go to there if organizer their scan
2:50 document organizer is up it goes to there and if nothing's up this one's
2:54 great you press scan it scans to the computer then prompts you with a whole
2:58 bunch of different options for what it can do with it some of them are useful like Dropbox and Google doc scanning
3:03 While others are unfortunately less useful with the email option being down
3:07 to Outlook expressed by default in Windows 7 and up and thirdparty add-ons
3:11 to change to Gmail the one I tried being aixa being imperfect at best but the
3:17 good news is you can configure whichever ones you want to appear and leave the
3:21 others speaking of configuration options all the usual ones are there so DPI
3:26 settings go from normal to better to best to excellent
3:30 I mean really uh you can pick color or black and white single or double-sided
3:34 you can automatically remove blank pages prompt for more pages when you're done
3:37 scanning or not and then we start to get into some of the more exotic stuff it
3:41 can use ultrasonic scanning to detect an accidental double page in the Auto
3:45 Theater it can autor rotate your finished documents to keep everything
3:49 easy to read once it's scanned and there's even an option to convert
3:52 everything to searchable PDFs with the included acrobat software so then you
3:57 can use the organizer to search for any relev scan documents very easily in
4:03 theory most of these features work really well but in practice they're not
4:07 perfect I mean on A4 paper auto rotate
4:10 I'd say is 95 plus% accurate but with things like business cards and receipts
4:15 that's probably closer to 75% the text
4:18 detection for business cards and searchable PDFs is also a little bit hit
4:22 or miss with documents I found that searching for stuff off the top of my
4:26 head usually yielded the thing that I was looking for but the mode that lets
4:30 you highlight text and then apply those keywords to documents didn't work that
4:34 well for me and business cards were all over the place whenever they're oriented
4:38 Wrong by the software text detection it doesn't actually pick up any of the
4:43 pertinent information and organize it correctly at all and even when they are
4:47 oriented correctly it missed a lot of stuff I mean to be fair the speed and
4:51 image quality are good and business cards don't follow very standard
4:55 formatting but I still don't think that's an excuse for not tracking down
4:58 basic stuff like the phone number one high point here though is that the card
5:02 minder application once you've entered all of the missing data and cleaned
5:06 things up a little bit is really great you can just press a quick hotkey and
5:09 bring up business cards extremely quickly it's a lot better than having
5:13 Stacks like this just lying around like I have in the past so since we're on the
5:18 subject of good stuff the document feeder is really great I didn't need the
5:21 included carrier sheet which flattens out and protects fragile documents at
5:25 all it does a great job with slightly ripped or even crinkled paper and on the
5:30 other end of the spectrum I accidentally put in my Star Citizen card a plastic
5:34 card in it when I was scanning business cards and if I hadn't been constantly
5:39 refilling the hopper to do more business cards in one batch without stopping it
5:43 probably wouldn't have even gotten stuck in the output try and jammed but even
5:47 then the scan ended up looking fine I was able to pull it out and I was able
5:50 to keep going just like that the one thing I was able to deed it with fairly
5:54 often was very very small receipts like
5:58 taxi receipts or weird shaped business
6:01 cards other than that I was really impressed by the document feeder and the
6:05 impressed keeps coming last time around the mobile app experience was terrible I
6:09 couldn't even get it working this time it pretty much couldn't have been better
6:13 remember that bit about just scanning at
6:16 whatever is open when you press the button after a short simple Setup Wizard
6:21 you can get docs on your phone in two ways you can load a document then Press
6:25 scan in the app on your phone and boity Presto it's on your pH phone or you can
6:30 use the quick menu to scan it to the PC like normal then press mobile when the
6:35 menu pops up it'll wait for you to launch the app on your phone then push
6:39 it to you over Wi-Fi in a couple of seconds without you even interacting with the app on your phone then if you
6:44 want to go back to PC scanning mode when you're done you just close or even
6:48 minimize the app on your phone and everything is back to normal within about a second very cool it completely
6:54 changes the way we scan things around our office because usually we just need
6:59 something temporarily to email an NDA to someone or something like that and now
7:04 anyone with the password can scan something directly to their phone by
7:07 just walking over to the scanner pressing scan on their phone and boom
7:11 done five stars right there but of course all of this comes at a cost the
7:16 is500 is super expensive especially given that scanners have been commodity
7:21 items for like 10 years that makes it a really tough sell for the average user
7:26 but with features like quick paper jam removal
7:31 user replaceable parts for a longer Lifetime and a pretty amazing community
7:34 building new mods and features all the time for a business user even a smallish
7:39 one it's basically a no-brainer I mean check out this little hack to use the
7:43 highlighting keyword feature to automatically censor names on a legal
7:47 document how much manual Crossing out would that save pretty cool anyway guys
