0:52 ah that's better
0:55 if you guys watch this channel chances are you've got a fond memory of a
0:59 thinkpad whether you were trying to get need for speed 2se to run on your
1:03 parents work laptop or you were actually doing important things for yourself the
1:08 thinkpad was always up to the task with its rugged design and nipple for a mouse
1:15 but are those just rosy eyed memories or
1:18 were these actually fantastic machines
1:22 that would still hold up today well the 25th anniversary edition is here and
1:28 it might be everything i remember
1:32 and more speaking of remembering remember to
1:35 check out sennheiser's pxc 550 wireless
1:38 headphones they feature up to 30 hours of battery life noise guard hybrid
1:43 active noise cancellation and more you can learn more at the link below
1:55 rising out of its box the thinkpad anniversary edition is soaked in
2:00 nostalgia everything about it just feels
2:04 right the keyboard the track nub and
2:08 even the way it beeps at you when you press too many keys at once
2:13 the outer build quality feels exceptional dare i say it even up to the
2:17 old ibm standard and every surface is
2:20 sturdy while also surprisingly smooth i
2:24 o wise the modern minimalistic trend is
2:27 nowhere to be seen it's got Ethernet HDMI 3 usb 3 ports an sd reader and
2:34 Thunderbolt 3 so you won't be left stranded no matter what you need while
2:38 you're working just like an old thinkpad
2:41 on that subject let's meet the og device that we'll be
2:46 comparing it to we took a trip down to the local electronics recycler free geek
2:50 vancouver and picked up this sweet thinkpad 560x a model from before
2:58 ibm had stopped making laptops and sold that business unit and its trademarks to
3:03 lenovo at 20 years old this thing
3:07 well before we would even think about using
3:11 it it needed a really good scrub but after some love from a smooth
3:16 removing tool a new cmos battery
3:19 wow look at that duct cursor man and some old school Windows know-how
3:24 from Anthony it was ready to go so let's look at the specs of both computers the
3:29 thinkpad anniversary rocks a solid the last gen core i7 7500u dual core CPU
3:35 which is so much faster than the pentium
3:39 mmx tillamook in the 560x that there is
3:42 no meaningful way to compare the two it's got
3:46 170 times more memory with
3:49 128 times the storage and the only real
3:52 disappointment here is probably the GPU
3:56 10 series graphics cards have been out for about a year and a half now and the
4:00 gt 940 in here is better than nothing but it won't handle anything but older
4:05 games and maybe a bit of acceleration in photoshop or premiere
4:10 to its credit though the anniversary edition kept all of its components nice
4:14 and cool while remaining quiet although it can air sometimes on the
4:18 side of lower clocks for longer battery life and lower temperatures rather than
4:24 higher clocks with more heat and more power the keyboards on both feel almost
4:28 identical save for the very soft semicolon on the 560x and that's a good
4:34 thing since they both have amazing keyboards the keys have a super long
4:39 travel with this great tactile feedback
4:43 and the layout this might be a bit strange these days i might be wrong it
4:47 would be easy it's morning shut the [ __ ] up like it would be easy
4:51 to accidentally hit function s instead of actually saving your work for example
4:55 but it's nothing you couldn't get used to and pretty much every key you could
4:58 need is present i give it an a as for the track pad to its credit it
5:04 tracks well and is surprisingly smooth to the touch
5:07 but it is pretty small since most of the
5:10 vertical space here is taken up by the left right and middle clicks for the red
5:15 pointing stick between the g h and b keys
5:19 let's talk about that with how god-awful the track trackpads
5:23 were 20 years ago it is no great mystery
5:26 why people who actually had time-sensitive work to do preferred
5:31 these little nubbins but these days not everyone is going to
5:35 like a point even with the four nipple
5:39 options included in the box and it does take a little getting used to
5:44 but we would never take points off for
5:47 including it because for us the anniversary edition ended up being all
5:52 about options for certain tasks like highlighting text
5:56 or quickly switching between mousing and typing the track point was as the kids
6:01 say on point for casual one-handed operation while sitting back the
6:05 touchpad was generally preferred and for bigger movements the included touch
6:10 screen was a definite blessing
6:13 though i wish i could say the same about other
6:16 aspects of the screen what the balls lenovo
6:21 where is my dedicated brightness adjustment slider
6:25 this experience has been totally ruined for me ruined
6:31 yeah i'm just kidding the 1080p ips display with a matte finish
6:35 isn't cutting edge but it's still great for productivity and is definitely
6:40 better than the 560x's 800 by 600 hpa
6:44 display that has pixel response times in the hundreds of milliseconds it really
6:50 is too bad that its old owner didn't spring for the tn panel
6:54 so the thinkpad 25th anniversary edition also includes lots of options when it
6:58 comes to authentication with Windows hello added to its perfectly acceptable
7:02 webcam and speakers and a fingerprint reader to the right of the keyboard then
7:06 once it's unlocked assuming that you went for the option with a second
7:09 hot-swappable battery this thing will keep going almost all day
7:14 now unsurprisingly the thinkpad anniversary edition isn't the premiere
7:19 multimedia laptop on the market no high resolution display no amazing
7:24 speakers with dolby atmos certification and it sucks for games
7:30 but it is easily one of the best laptops for productivity and in many ways it
7:35 makes other devices these days feel like
7:39 decorations or toys with its excellent
7:42 keyboard pointing stick and battery life
7:46 now i don't know if it'll still be working 20 years from now
7:49 like our 560x but i also don't see why it would let
7:54 you down it's everything we like about modern notebooks with everything we
7:58 remember liking about classic ones so if you were thinking about pulling
8:02 the trigger i say go for it as long as you can afford one
8:07 or even get one since it's a limited production run
8:12 this episode was brought to you by tunnelbear the easy to use vpn app when
8:17 people are shopping for a vpn one of the features they look for is a kill switch
8:22 so before you connect to a network your device starts to send information about
8:25 itself and what it wants to do and it tries to establish connections with all
8:30 sorts of things and there are other devices out there that are trying to
8:33 connect to yours well a kill switch stops all of this from happening because
8:38 before you connect to your vpn all your traffic is unencrypted so in the few
8:42 seconds it takes to connect you've probably already broadcast your ip a few
8:45 dns requests or a search query well vigilant bear from tunnelbear stops all
8:50 of this behavior from happening by blocking all outbound and inbound
8:54 traffic so nothing leaks out before you're connected this keeps you private
8:58 throughout your entire connection time and it even kicks back in if your
9:02 connection goes down for some reason and you have to reconnect so for a free
9:06 trial of tunnelbear go to tunnelbear.com LTT we've got that linked below
