0:00 in life you purchase your electronics your groceries your clothing whatever
0:04 else you need you take off the packaging you throw it in the trash can and once a
0:07 week someone comes to take it all away it's like magic once it's gone you never
0:12 have to worry about it again unfortunately for us the same cannot be
0:16 said for deleting files on a computer storage drive for one thing usually
0:22 deleting a file just moves it to the recycle bin which has no sanitation
0:26 technician who comes and removes it every week it's simply a different
0:30 folder location where files are stored indefinitely the file is still there and
0:35 anyone with access to your computer can find them
0:38 silly Linus once it's in the bin i can just
0:42 empty the whole thing with one click and my computer tells me hey this is a
0:46 permanent change and that file will no longer be accessible on your computer once you do that and you would be
0:51 correct mostly the file is no longer easily accessible on your computer but
0:55 there is a huge difference between whether a file is easily accessible and
1:00 whether it has actually been removed on
1:03 both magnetic and solid-state drives the bits of data that make up your photos
1:08 music tax records and whatever else are naturally kind of scattered around and
1:13 the way your operating system knows where to find all the pieces is on ntfs
1:18 formatted drives anyway through the reference to it in the master file table
1:22 so back to deleting stuff removing a file from the recycle bin only removes
1:27 the master file table reference that points to the pieces that make up that
1:32 file puzzle and registers the space that
1:35 it used to take up as empty this gives the operating system permission to go
1:41 right over it but that does not mean that right after you clean out your
1:44 recycle bin the file is gone not by a
1:47 long shot in fact there are many programs that are dedicated to
1:51 reconstructing deleted files some of which can do so even after a drive has
1:57 been reformatted and using those programs right away like right after an
2:01 accidental deletion or reformat before lots of the data has been gradually
2:06 overwritten has saved many a person's bacon from costly or upsetting loss of
2:11 data but sometimes you want to get rid of files permanently from a storage
2:16 drive like if you were going to sell it or donate it in that case how do you do
2:20 it well there are a few tried and true methods that we'll highlight today the
2:25 first one is to delete all the data on the drive then fill it up to capacity
2:30 with new random data over and over again
2:33 this method really wipes your whole drives make sure you have any important
2:37 family pictures transferred to a new drive before you go ahead and do that
2:41 the second is physical destruction of the drive
2:47 both fun and effective but obviously you won't be able to donate that drive
2:52 that's more for if there's very sensitive data on it that you just need
2:56 to get rid of speaking of things that are fun and
3:00 effective con i'm sorry i mean uh today's sponsor fractal design which
3:05 what we can't do the humiliating thing here we have to leave
3:10 okay well let's see how this goes so we're here in the park where
3:14 apparently today's whoa today's humiliating thing is for me to be spun
3:19 around instead of talking about fractal designs
3:22 you know scandinavian design minimalistic cases and their power
3:26 supplies and their cooling products and fans i guess fans are also cooling
3:29 products but basically the point is i'm supposed to spend time like super dizzy
3:34 and then run through a gauntlet of my co-workers who are all armed with
3:39 hopefully not spikes because they could have changed the pillows out for anything while i've been doing this what
3:44 do you think am i dizzy enough i love you okay here we go
3:54 oh
