0:07 welcome to my unboxing and first look at the Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD so moving
0:13 right along to what makes the 840 Pro special Three core MDX controller now
0:18 this okay so this is a part of what makes Samsung special on a bigger level
0:22 is the fact that Samsung is the only one
0:26 who actually designs and manufactures their own s SD I was about to say STDs
0:31 they design and manufacture STDs no they don't do that um they own ssds from top
0:36 to bottom everything from the controller
0:40 they design and manufacture it to the RAM they design and manufacture it to
0:44 the flash which they design and manufacture to the firmware which they
0:48 design and code and replicate
0:52 manufacture um everyone else is relying
0:55 on someone else on a hardware level or on a software level
1:00 next thing here is they're using toggle ddr2 Nan flashmemory toggle DDR 2.0 Nan
1:06 flash memory okay lpddr2 SD RAM cach
1:09 memory AES 256bit encryption is built in
1:12 which basically means that they take whatever password that you've created for your SSD Reiger it 14 times and make
1:19 it pretty darn difficult to crack so you can set that up on a BIOS level to make
1:23 sure that whoever gets your computer is not actually going to be able to access
1:26 any of your data they'll still be able to format the drive but they won't able
1:30 to actually read anything on there without some pretty serious hacking
1:33 tools next up we've got their magician software which is basically a toolkit of
1:37 software that allows you to do performance optimization so you can
1:40 manually trim the drive you can uh do
1:43 like a simple Benchmark you can secure erase it you can still good because ssds
1:49 are shock resistant um you can do firmware updates so all that stuff that
1:54 you'd expect from an SSD toolkit this particular drive has a 5-year warranty
1:58 so the pro drive is positioned above the regular 840 it does use mlc Flash which
2:04 is basically two bits per cell compared to uh three bits per cell on the regular
2:09 840 they do use the same controller technology however so the main
2:14 difference is in the flash being used and that's another one of the reasons why Samsung gives this one a 5year
2:19 warranty versus the three-year warranty on the 840 because they are expecting
2:23 that mlc flash to put up with an Enthusiast level usage pattern for well
2:29 at at least 5 years and my typical observation is that when a manufacturer
2:34 gives you a three-year warranty they are expecting it to last more like six to
2:38 eight years when they give you a 5-year warranty they are expecting it to last
2:42 longer than that because I mean I can tell you guys right now based on how
2:46 much margin there is and something like flash and RAM and controllers and
2:50 everything that's in here they cannot afford to 5 years from now be replacing
2:55 all of them it doesn't work that way they can afford to be replacing a very
2:58 very very small percentage of them one of the other luxuries that Samsung
3:02 enjoys because they manufacture everything that goes in the drive is
3:05 that they can kind of save the best for themselves so Samsung sells flash
3:10 Samsung sells RAM to other guys to manufacture ssds but it's all about
3:15 binning so if you guys understand the binning process you know that what
3:18 Samsung's doing is they're manufacturing like a butt ton of Flash and then
3:22 they're going to go okay well this is the grade A stuff this is the Grade B
3:26 stuff grade C and that stuff's going to go in like USB thumb drives or whatever
3:30 else like that um and this is the like
3:33 other stuff that we're just going to put over here and then put that in our own
3:37 products don't worry about it don't worry about it customers we got this we got this one so I think that pretty much
3:41 covers it the 840 Pro if you have missed any of it that I said so far is about as
3:46 fast as it gets for an SSD today SAA 36 gbit per second it has a super fast
3:51 controller it's capable of something ridiculous like it's a 100,000 iops um
3:56 on yeah reads up to 100,000 iops and writes up to 90,000 iops so those are
4:01 random um has a 5year warranty did I say that
4:06 already something about STDs don't forget to subscribe to lus Tech tips for
