0:00 back in the mid 1990s it was very common to see naive sounding marketing about
0:04 how the internet was this remarkable new tool that could connect you to people
0:08 all over the world and while that was certainly true giving every random
0:13 person out there a keyboard a platform visible to anyone on Earth and some
0:18 degree of anonymity was also The Perfect Storm for internet trolls to start
0:23 antagonizing everyone of course people including non- trolls anger each other
0:28 online on a regular basis by the way trolling is not the same as
0:32 getting into a heated argument with someone who's expressing a sincere
0:36 opinion rather trolling is intentionally
0:39 posting something misleading or inflammatory in order to trick or upset
0:44 people and often to provoke some kind of
0:47 response as well but why did people even troll in the first place especially as
0:52 there's already enough Strife on the internet perhaps unsurprisingly there
0:56 have been psychological studies done on the subject that have found a
1:00 correlation between trolling behavior and so-called dark personality traits
1:06 such as narcissism and psychopathy tying into the idea that a commonly suggested
1:10 motive for trolling is that it makes the troll feel important and better than the
1:15 victim as they can elicit very strong emotional reactions from people with
1:20 just a few keystrokes wait what well okay obviously not every Internet troll
1:25 is a completely self-absorbed psychopath but the point is more that General human
1:31 curiosity of drama combined with our natural desire for attention makes
1:35 online gathering places a fertile ground for people who like watching the world
1:40 burn or maybe just the message board and speaking of forums one common variation
1:45 of trolling takes the form of concern trolling where someone goes into a forum
1:50 of something like a rival sports team or say political candidate and pretends to
1:55 be a supporter then tries to undermine the group in some way this could be
1:59 anything from pointing out dubious weaknesses in other people's positions
2:04 in order to sew Discord and doubt or
2:07 simply saying things to make the group look illegitimate or unhinged some
2:12 political campaigns and corporations have even been caught using sponsored
2:16 trolls to attack opposing Brands politicians or ideologies in fact a
2:21 Harvard study concluded that the government of mainland China posts
2:25 nearly half a billion troll messages on social media every year in order to sway
2:31 public opinion but assuming the trolls you usually encounter on a day-to-day
2:35 basis aren't covertly backed by government or business another proposed
2:39 motivator for trolling is something called
2:42 deindividuation which is the tendency people have to lose their sense of self
2:47 in crowds just as people in a large group can sometimes end up rioting or
2:51 engaging in other Shenanigans due to the individuals involved thinking they don't
2:56 bear as much responsibility since everyone else around them is also
3:01 throwing rocks or whatever trolls often see themselves as part of an anonymous
3:05 mass of people which lowers their inhibitions and makes it easier for them
3:10 to go at people online when they wouldn't say the same things in a real
3:14 life conversation one-on-one and this type of trolling doesn't even have to be
3:18 verbal one such famous trolling incident happened back in 2005 when a glitch in
3:24 World of Warcraft allowed trolls to spread intentionally an in-game sickness
3:29 called corrupted blood to lots of other users creating an in-game catastrophe
3:35 for tons of unsuspecting players at the hands of an anonymous mob of trolls but
3:41 as widespread as trolling is because of these psychological Tendencies much of
3:45 it comes in the form of calling people who play a certain game or buy a certain
3:49 thing Fanboys or saying stuff like my local sports team will surely defeat
3:54 yours in the upcoming athletic competition a more directly threatening
3:59 concern when it's bad enough to have more direct consequences such as doxing
4:04 where trolls publish personal information or private details about a
4:08 Target online you can learn more about real life effects of online abuse here
