0:19 of storage space for not a lot of money but which one do you choose even though
0:25 hard drives are all relatively slow compared to ssds you'll still find that
0:30 they vary in price performance and features and this isn't just due to
0:36 differences in how fast they spin

0:42 the spindle speed denoted in RPM is how many times the disc platters rotate per
0:47 minute so all other things being equal then the faster this is the faster data
0:53 can be read and written and the lower the seek times or latency are but all
0:59 other things aren't equal you see for example some hard drives are made to be
1:04 tougher than others you'll often see these marketed as nas grade enterprise
1:09 or surveillance drives the idea is that
1:12 for these kinds of applications the hard drives they don't get to spin down and
1:18 go to sleep like they would if they were installed in a typical desktop they have

1:36 and is this a feature that's worth paying extra for let's start by looking
1:40 at a simple way that drive manufacturers stabilize their server grade products
1:46 they will actually attach the motor that spins the platters to both the top and
1:50 the bottom of the drive's housing consumer hard drives by contrast often
1:55 anchor the motor only to the bottom of the unit this extra stabilization is
1:59 important because nas's and servers typically have many drives spinning and
2:05 clicking away next to each other in close quarters which means more
2:09 vibration higher end drives also try to avoid
2:12 errors with more precise actuators that move the reed and right head around the
2:17 disc they'll incorporate stronger magnets inside that can accelerate the
2:21 head more quickly and the heads themselves will even be narrower this

2:29 physically larger giving the drive a larger margin for error in the event
2:33 that something like a sudden physical shock occurs
2:36 and when things do go wrong higher end drives can to an extent compensate for
2:42 mishaps many of these hard drives have built-in sensors that can detect shocks
2:47 vibrations and even temperature changes which will tell the drive to adjust how
2:52 the head positions itself over the platters preventing the drive from
2:56 slowing down too much some of them can even get rid of problematic air bubbles
3:01 that can form inside the fluid dynamic bearings that helped the platters spin
3:05 so that's all pretty cool but if you just need more storage for
3:09 your steam library you probably don't need anything more than a typical
3:13 consumer grade drive as it won't be exposed to either the physical risks or
3:19 the demanding workloads that the more expensive drives are designed for so for
3:24 you the viewer it probably does just come down to
3:28 performance capacity and price
3:31 with that said if you're running a home nas to serve media within your home or
3:35 even over the internet a nas drive is probably going to be a good choice and
3:39 these can even be a good bet if you're running a raid array in your pc since
3:42 the drives tend to be quite close together and nas drives are built to
3:46 withstand vibration or if you know for a fact you're only using this hard drive
3:51 for archival purposes where you'll be writing to it once and then only really
3:56 reading from it over time shingled magnetic storage drives can be a good
4:00 bet they're much slower to write to but their read speeds are more than
4:04 acceptable and they do tend to be cheaper because manufacturers can get
4:08 more density out of the platter by actually overlaying tracks on top of
4:12 each other just like shingles hence the name the last edge case for home users
4:16 is probably surveillance drives which i guess leads us perfectly to another key
4:21 but not very obvious difference from one model to another
4:24 firmware hard drive manufacturers can optimize their devices for better
4:29 performance in certain workloads and surveillance drives are designed to
4:33 handle many simultaneous streams of data concurrently in a way that drives that
4:38 were made to boot your operating system simply can't their read speeds might be
4:43 a little bit slower but a good surveillance drive will make it more
4:47 likely that you can get a positive id on that guy who took your who pudding and
