0:00 all right so welcome to a pretty unusual build log around
0:05 here we are going to be building ourselves a badass new
0:10 router yes we've got a wicked new internet connection we need a wicked new
0:15 custom pf sense box to go with it so
0:19 come along for the ride because this one i promise you is going to be interesting
0:33 the master case 5 from cooler master gives you the freedom to truly make your
0:37 mid tower case your own with modular parts and accessories click on the link
0:42 in the video description to learn more you missed there Linus yeah first thing
0:47 i need to do is uh follow my own rules about no garbage in
0:51 the new office there next let's have a look at the hardware we're going to be using so step one is CPU we've got a low
0:57 power Intel xeon CPU this is an e3 1260
1:01 l this is an Intel s 1200 kp
1:04 server board provided by kingston we've got kind of a special stick of memory in
1:09 here so this is a low profile ddr3 dim we've got a 1u
1:17 server case so this is a rack mountable case that'll be going in our new cabinet
1:21 from norco you could install up to i believe an atx size board in here if you
1:26 really wanted to but we're just going to be installing an itx board because we're
1:30 going to be using this space over here for an expansion card yes it's an i340
1:35 t4 quad port network card and we're actually going to be installing that
1:39 sideways we're also going to need this was provided by Anthony over at ncix so
1:44 huge thanks to the ncix tech tips crew this is a pci express extension uh what
1:49 else we got for hardware ah yeah we're going to be using an SSD yes i know
1:53 pfsense can run off usb stick i don't care uh the next uh this is a really
1:57 cool piece of hardware so this a 1u
2:01 redundant power supply
2:04 so each of these is an 80 plus gold 250
2:08 watt power supply and then you can actually slide these
2:12 modules out last piece of hardware this is a super micro
2:17 heat sink and that's another challenge in 1u case
2:21 you can't even use a stock Intel cooler you might be thinking to yourself
2:25 gee Linus that doesn't have any fans on it how's it going to cool the CPU
2:30 great question
2:34 i think this is definitely the most constrained case that i've ever worked
2:38 in the part i was worried about was the
2:42 clearance at the back now i already know about some challenges
2:46 that i'm gonna have fitting our power supply in this case so the board goes in
2:50 here and you can see all of my ports
2:54 stick through just fine but the case
2:57 is actually shorter than a standard io shield
3:02 if i mark this really carefully i can basically just
3:07 hack it off with a dremel tool ah i'm getting so much metal in my eye
3:17 not too shabby i hope oh wow i way over did it look at that
3:22 so that is what it's gonna look like
3:26 okay so the next step is to get our CPU installed so the CPU we're using is a
3:32 1260 l we could swap this out
3:36 with relative ease if we needed a beefier router
3:40 let's go ahead and install our back plate oh
3:44 okay this chip on the back
3:48 is interfering with our back plate
3:51 shoot and we're gonna need the angle grinder for this this is not a dremel
3:54 task
4:00 okay not bad at all
4:05 just clean it off i might want to take that in a little
4:08 bit tighter so there we've dug out a little bit more
4:13 material still fairly strong i mean strong enough to hold a cooler on so
4:17 ah yeah there we go so you've got lots of clearance around the contacts for
4:21 that chip there so orientation here is key because the airflow only goes one
4:27 way so our CPU cooler needs to you have got to be kidding me
4:33 we are making contact with the pins on a fan header
4:38 right there
4:42 so the speaker's okay but that
4:46 bit next to the pins has to go this is intended to sit right flat against the
4:50 back of the board but there's quite a few things on the back of this board we
4:54 might just barely be able to screw into that back
4:57 plate and then this corner
5:02 yeah that goes in it's a fair bit of flex on the board but uh nothing deadly
5:07 nothing i think we should just hack off the top
5:11 of this speaker too it should be enough to get the job done
5:16 i just don't want those pins to touch
5:20 yeah take that speaker
5:23 we've been at this for like an hour and we've installed an io shield
5:27 and installed a CPU in a socket i haven't even managed to put a heatsink
5:31 on cold thermal compound there
5:35 let's put the back plate on again
5:40 so if i can just get this on here then we're good okay
5:45 no clearance issues this time
5:48 not too shabby next step
5:52 put motherboard in case
5:56 so this heatsink basically sits millimeters
6:00 from the top of the chassis meaning that you cannot install a fan on there most
6:05 1u coolers are like uh side blowers you know we wanted to
6:09 leave ourselves room for a beefier CPU in the future if we wanted it so that
6:13 option was not going to work for us we're going to have to be careful when
6:17 we slide this on we got to kind kinda okay
6:21 this is the next big challenge i had no idea that there even were standards for
6:26 one new power supplies these two are not the same one the way that this goes in
6:31 just has absolutely nothing to do
6:35 with what the back of this power supply looks like
6:38 that leaves me basically cutting the case to get this in here so
6:44 i need to get this in here and i need to secure it somehow
6:52 you know what let's just hot glue it in because i don't feel that comfortable
6:55 drilling into the side of a power supply the last place you want metal shards
7:00 okay
7:04 the window in go in push down
7:08 cable management is going to be key for achieving
7:13 any kind of proper airflow in a system like this
7:17 yep power led is green so this my friends is where we start to
7:21 get into why it was important that we
7:24 use this low profile ecc memory a full
7:29 height dim would pretty much block airflow to our fins now some boards have
7:33 the dimms this way this one does not so we have to
7:37 deal with what we're given to work with here next step mounting the pci express card
7:43 oh cool you can actually install it either way
7:48 wow i don't know if we're even gonna get a 4x
7:52 extender in here our cable management
7:56 is done so we have a nice clear path
8:00 to our balls so we have a nice clear path from our fans
8:04 to everything here that needs to be cooled the heatsink on our neck the
8:09 heatsink on our CPU and all that's left to do
8:13 is close her up and find out how she runs now what i'm
8:16 actually going to do is put Windows on this machine first just so that i can
8:21 use nice familiar testing tools in order
8:24 to evaluate cooling because i am a little bit worried about this CPU
8:35 so we were defeated we were defeated by a dead motherboard but
8:39 ebay to the rescue i can't say enough good things about ebay i ordered this
8:44 motherboard a 250 watt power supply and four gigs of RAM
8:49 at least i got the motherboard fortunately i didn't need that other
8:52 crap so let's go ahead and rebuild the
8:56 machine this time with a oh
9:00 working motherboard
9:06 oh crap i can't even do it right the second
9:09 time around let's try putting the actual
9:13 cooler back plate on here i don't know how i missed this before
9:17 but on the old board which fortunately we
9:20 can now use as a as a tester for the additional cutting that it looks like
9:25 we're going to be doing there are a couple of components here that are
9:28 clearly interfering with the back plates till so we actually need to do
9:33 more back plate cutting
9:38 so in theory this finally actually fits on the board
9:41 okay great
9:45 it shouldn't be this much effort to build a router
9:50 this is why most people probably buy a router
9:54 i mean they have them they have them at the store they have a whole aisle called
9:57 browders
10:01 thermal compound all right
10:04 and this speaker maybe i'll just
10:08 rip this off this time that seems ill-advised on my working
10:13 board doesn't it we could use the sacrificial board to
10:17 find out if you can rip the speaker off
10:20 okay you can't now we know we can use a dremel if i can
10:25 find it oh yeah there it is sure
10:29 there we go in theory we are
10:33 ready to rock let's see if it's on
10:37 nothing ever takes as long as it's supposed to
10:41 okay that's in let's put our cable management
10:48 nonsense back into place i mean that's nice at least i don't have
10:51 to plan out the cable management anymore since i've already done it once
10:56 there we go okay so that's good i'm
11:00 thinking yep there we go so in theory this time this stupid
11:06 thing powers on all right come on baby
11:11 please work
11:27 what
11:34 okay i'm at a total loss right now i'm not sure what just happened
11:42 i have nothing to say at this point i i think something about our config
11:48 just killed another board but i don't understand
11:52 why that would happen because the only thing in here that i haven't
11:57 run in this board before is a pci express riser
12:02 and um RAM which
12:06 shouldn't make a board scream and then die it's
12:10 unheard of
12:14 but i think we just killed another board
12:18 exact same behavior as last time we're getting beeps
12:22 and then he stopped getting beeps
12:26 our working hypothesis right now is that this is some kind of connector
12:31 that i've never seen before and was actually providing power to the
12:37 motherboard instead of acting as like an RPM sense or something so we're testing
12:41 with the multimeter now we just bricked two boards time to order
12:47 another one i guess stay tuned for part two
12:53 so i learned a lot in this video you know what else i learned
12:57 squarespace their websites look better
13:01 than me writing on a chalkboard yes my friends they do with squarespace.com you
13:06 can build yourself a beautiful functional website that serves whatever
13:09 purpose it is that you're into you want to make a website about luke having the
13:13 best butt in the biz or how it doesn't you can do that you can make a blog you
13:17 can make a personal portfolio you can make a hey you can make a store you can
13:22 have a store where you sell um you know license plate covers that say luke has
13:26 best bud in biz or you know something people might actually want to
13:30 buy say for example so head over to squarespace.com i think it's Linus i
13:35 should know this kind of thing by now so head over to squarespace.com and if you
13:40 guys use offer code Linus you can save 10 but you don't have to buy it up front
13:45 you guys can try it out for a couple weeks for free they do a free trial you
13:49 can play around with their tools they've got 24 7 tech support so if you're
13:53 having trouble building your site you can reach out to someone via email or
13:56 live chat and get them to help you out great stuff they've got all kinds of
14:00 stuff that like i used to talk about but isn't in my talking points anymore but i
14:04 still think is cool like their little logo builder app and uh they've got this
14:08 really cool thing coming up that
14:14 oh i guess i wasn't supposed to talk about that sorry sorry well whatever
14:18 they're always developing their tools and making them better all the time so
14:21 squarespace.com make a beautiful website all of your own
14:26 all right so thanks for watching guys if you disliked this video as much as i
14:30 disliked making it then press like uh also if you liked it
14:36 press like and uh if you liked it then maybe you'll consider supporting us
14:40 either by buying a cool t-shirt like this one directly through our community forum or by changing your amazon
14:45 bookmarks with our affiliate code you can find the instructions for how to do that up in the eye in the top right
14:49 corner i think that pretty much wraps it up though thanks again for watching and
