0:00 Linus Tech tips coverage of CES 2015 is brought to you by Phantom glass visit
0:04 store. phantom.in screen protectors out there
0:08 as well as hyperx so I've got my lovely Vanna White
0:12 here who thought he was going to hide throughout the video but of course I'm
0:16 not going to not going to let him get away with that showing off the gt80
0:19 Titan SLI
0:23 -009 this has been all over the internet
0:26 as the world's first maybe for a reason
0:30 gaming notebook with a builtin Cherry MX
0:33 mechanical keyboard so MSI has uh has
0:36 was quick to pull out the keycap puller and show off that these are not just any
0:41 mechanical key switches these are genuine cherrymx key switches they also
0:46 pointed out that they went to Great Lengths to find exactly the right red
0:50 LEDs these are not just the standard provided ones for red LED illuminated
0:54 switches so that the keyboard itself is extremely vibrant even in a bright
0:58 situation like the suite that we're standing in right next to a window right
1:03 now now some compromises have to be made
1:06 if you're going to make a gaming notebook with a full thickness
1:09 mechanical keyboard so number one is that you're not going to want to Stack
1:12 any components under the section of the notebook where the mechanical keyboard
1:16 is here can you turn it to the side so they can see the profile there we go so
1:19 this thickness right here is pure keyboard along the side all the
1:24 components for the notebook itself including the optical drive the quad
1:28 core CPU and two gtx980m graphics cards have to be in
1:33 this position right here now the other compromise you have to make is that you
1:37 don't end up with much of a wrist rest then in this scenario and I talked to
1:40 MSI about this and they kind of went well you know ho hum you know
1:44 engineering is hard and all that kind of stuff and I and they made some very good
1:48 points so I kind of said well I'd love to have the keyboard here and they kind
1:51 of went well then you're going to have heat from the components on your wrist
1:54 then you're not necessarily going to get that exact profile that people are used
1:58 to with mechanical keyboard because the way that they're shipping this is with a wrist rest so it's designed to be used
2:04 from here now I kind of went well then I'm a little bit far away from the screen and the response was okay well
2:08 hold on a second it's a 1080p screen and this is an 18 whatever 18.4 in screen so
2:16 you're going to want to sit a little bit further away from it anyway and I kind of went okay Touche on that again and I
2:21 kind of went well okay I still think it's huge and it's still not necessarily
2:25 made for me and they went well hold on but wait line is there's more we throw
2:28 in a backpack that actually fits this monstrosity so people can use it and
2:33 with their new upgrade program that they introduced last Friday this is I'm not
2:37 going to say world's worst worst excuse me world's first upgradable notebook
2:43 because there have been notebooks that have been upgradeable before but this is
2:46 the first one I'm aware of where there is actually a plan for an upgrade path
2:52 so their upgrade program promises that for two product Generations on gpus MSI
2:58 will have available new mxm modules and
3:02 new cooling modules that you can install to move to the next two generations of
3:07 high-end graphics cards in here which I think is a very unique and B pretty
3:12 freaking cool they also made it easily accessible to get at most of the other
3:15 upgrades you might want to do so it's two screws to pull off this panel U I
3:20 had them take them off before the video It Doesn't just slide off like that don't worry it's okay and you can get at
3:24 the optical drive you can get at all four of the m.2 M SATA SS D so you can
3:30 run quad raid you can get at the 2 and 1/2 in hard drive you can get at two of
3:35 the four memory slots the other two are at the bottom and I guess that's pretty
3:39 much all you would really want to get at Wireless module is that accessible from
3:42 the bottom yes okay well there you go so you can get at the wireless module from
3:45 the bottom so the idea sorry I'll let you I'll let you stop being actually can
3:48 you turn around and we can look at the back um so the idea here is that someone
3:53 paying what was it $3,600 for a gaming notebook is probably
3:57 going to want to get more than one typical notebook life cycle out of it so
4:02 they wanted to make it highly upgradeable in terms of IO you're going
4:05 to have that massive this power brick is hilarious what is this a 300 watt power
4:10 brick 350 350 watt power brick all right and it uses a four pin connector here at
4:15 the back so you've got Ethernet dual mini DisplayPort and HDMI back here on
4:20 this side you got a couple usb3 super speed and then over on this side you've
4:24 got three more usb3 Super Speed Optical out Kensington lock SD card reader and a
4:28 couple audio jack now the last thing that I haven't talked about yet is the
4:33 unique shape of the touchpad thank you
4:36 very much you're being an excellent Vana so in order to make room for the
4:40 mechanical keyboard here uh they didn't have a whole lot of space for an
4:44 additional touchpad and while I looked at this initially and I kind of went
4:47 yeah you guys you guys done goofed because the screen is shaped this way
4:51 and the touchpad is shaped this way it's actually surprisingly not bad I found
4:56 that using it one-handed with my thumb on the click and my finger on the rest
5:01 of the touchpad was actually not a bad use case scenario for it and another
5:05 really cool thing is there's actually a numlock button up in the corner that you can press that brings up a I mean
5:10 there's no tactile feel other than a frankly fairly delayed haptic feedback
5:15 but it does at least give you a touchpad or a number pad if you so desire so um
5:22 as usual the keyboard is in conjunction with steel Series so I'm assuming it
5:25 supports steel series engine okay so it's only red backlighting so you won't
5:29 be doing like fancy Rainbow Lighting like on this uh GT series right here but
5:34 you will be able to fully reprogram all the keys just like you would be able to
5:38 on a normal MSI gaming notebook very cool stuff so that's the gt80 Titan SLI
5:42 009 guys thanks for checking out this video don't miss any of our CES coverage
5:47 remember our trip to the show this year is brought to you by Phantom glass the
5:50 makers of in our minds the best screen protectors for your phone on the market
5:53 they're made of Gorilla Glass they use a nano coating on the bottom so it's
5:57 pretty much impossible from my experience to get an air bubble in them
6:01 and uh they are as clear and as pleasing to use as the glass that's already on
6:05 your phone assuming you have a high-end device as well as hyperx so check out
6:09 their YouTube channel that's youtube.com/ X for great gaming content
6:13 over there thanks again for watching and don't miss any of our CES coverage by
