5:58 of a Funny Story story for uh everyone here and I guess everyone who's watching

6:03 the show since everyone's kind of live at the moment um I went out of my way I

6:08 got myself a Us address to ship it to

6:11 and I bought the remote that goes with it I picked up an Amazon Echo it sat on

6:17 my table at home for like two weeks cuz I was like the way this has to be

6:21 reviewed is kind of different you have to make it part of your life you can't

6:25 just sit in front of it and go Echo tell

6:28 me about Le birs well it's material quality isn't really that great but I

6:33 don't know it could work in your computer because you're reviewing a lifestyle product so I was like Luke I

6:38 do not have time for this can you do the echo he goes yeah sure that sounds right

6:42 up my alley and I have a week's vacation and I was looking for something to work on from work anyway so how'd that go for

6:47 you uh it doesn't work in Canada it literally only works in the states so

6:51 what I would have to do to be able to get it to work is get a US registered

6:55 mobile device and then connect to it over Wi-Fi to actually set it up the

6:59 problem with that is I could I could like proxy out my router do whatever but

7:03 it has to persistently be like that so I'd have to like make my router think it

7:07 was in the states for like a month and that doesn't sound fun so nope and also

7:12 it wouldn't be a proper Fair review either because it's designed to work in

7:16 the states so even if parts of it did work it wouldn't be able to properly do

7:19 a lot of its functions so I wouldn't be able to properly say what the experience

7:23 was like so that's not going to happen so we gave up welcome to one of the many

7:28 stupid things that we we waste our money on and that never even turned into a

7:32 video because we thought hey maybe we can a lot of the time we pull this off

7:37 we'll take something that's not going to work and we'll just force it to work and

7:42 we'll and we'll make that stuff happen but a lot of the time it it just doesn't

7:45 work out here's some cool news though the onhub we are definitely going to be

7:50 able to do something with and in fact I believe we are going to be getting one of the earliest samples oh that's cool

7:55 yeah you didn't know that no I didn't even know we were getting it because not that long ago you said we weren't doing

7:59 routers anymore well the thing that a week the thing that I'm interested in

8:04 about this is a couple of things number one is why Google thinks they need a

8:07 router at all yeah what they believe they bring to the table other than

8:11 sitting between you and all of your possible internet traffic that they can

8:16 get whatever it is that they want to get out of that um hopefully they're

8:21 bringing some kind of a value proposition to the table so I want to

8:24 find out what it is yeah it doesn't

8:27 really seem extremely Apparent at first number two is I want to have a look at

8:31 the performance because the only thing that jumped into my mind that they might

8:36 think that they add to the table is Affordable performance and $200 is still

8:41 an expensive router but if they can handle full gigabit well yeah which is a

8:46 service they offer to their customers then maybe there's a value to it so I

8:52 definitely do want to check it out but I don't know how it also be interesting if

8:57 you got it at like a cheaper cost if you signed up for for their internet service

9:00 at the same time I also really want to see if they have some kind of crazy

9:04 Wi-Fi technology going on inside because as you guys may or may not know I'm not

9:10 a huge fan of anything but the best

9:13 Wi-Fi and the stuff we have here thank you for that uh the stuff we have here

9:19 is almost as good as it

9:22 gets this whole show is as good as it

9:26 gets but it's not the Enterprise version

9:30 so we've got some stuff from xclaim which is a daughter company of ruckus so

9:35 if we had Ruckus access points which their top ofth line goes for like a

9:39 th000 bucks a pop us really good like they're awesome but no we're not putting

9:44 like four of those in our office um if we had those we probably could have

9:48 handled everyone's Wi-Fi today but we're all on one midgrade unit today because

9:55 my data terminations are not done in this side of the building so I'm

9:59 supposed to have one in each corner of the building sort of like it's more

10:04 complicated than that but I'm supposed to have at least two at the front here

10:07 that I was hoping people would be able to use and I only have one that's really

10:10 in range but um I want to see what

10:14 Google has managed to do in terms of of Wi-Fi so they're saying it's got 13

10:18 antennas inside um which would be used

10:22 for beam forming and narrowing in on where exactly the devices are and and

10:26 hopefully getting better signal out of it I mean most companies just do it so

10:30 poorly though that I've kind of given up on consumer grade Wi-Fi so if Google

10:34 can't turn me around on this then um

10:38 there's a few things that I actually really like from like a family it dude

10:43 perspective so if you're the IT guy for like your immediate family and like your

10:46 grandma and stuff because uh one of the

10:49 Google on apps that you can have on your phone allows you to set up people like a

10:54 friend to help you remotely so if your grandma is like my RoR isn't working I

11:00 don't have the internets you could remotely go in you don't have to go to

11:04 her house necessarily so like if if you should go visit your grandma but like if

11:09 you can't for whatever reason she needs to get on the internet you can fix it

11:12 first and then you can go hang out with her and the internet I think it's kind

11:16 of cool being able to remotely fix things easily hang out with the internet

11:20 yeah I guess that's basic you not hang out with the internet I hang out with

11:23 the internet all the time exactly yeah I never use Google Hangouts for it though

11:29 there's also really easy setup and whatnot so if you've got a buddy who's

11:33 looking for a router and doesn't really know Network stuff and lives super far

11:36 away from you you can suggest this to him maybe if it's good yeah we got to

11:40 find out if it's easy Everyone is always promising me this network attached

11:45 storage device is easy this router is easy I promise this time it's easy it's

11:52 never easy no and one thing that's confusing is they're like it's easier

11:56 than 1 2 3core lowercase c lower lower

12:05 doesn't sound easy at all that's right from the onhub page so we are we're

13:05 here's a bit of news out of Amazon Jeff bzo says that they will not tolerate

13:10 callus management practices so this article is from USA Today let's go ahead

13:15 and uh drop the oh look at somebody's sponsor

13:20 message something to do with weed whacking uh let's go ahead and drop the

13:23 the article so uh some of the more

13:26 memorable you can mow an entire lawn with a WeedWacker some of the more memorable

13:33 anecdotes um I know that it was done once

13:37 ever instead of weekly never mind

13:42 continue uh so here are so so basically the question the article asks is can I

13:47 continue to support Amazon with my money um and there are some anecdotes about

13:52 you know working conditions at Amazon woman who had just lost a child in

13:55 pregnancy was put on performance review for not giving her all to the company

13:59 apparently emails are sent out at all hours miss the midnight email you get a

14:03 text message a few minutes later asking why you haven't replied uh daily

14:07 performance reviews are apparently standard giving opportunities the opport

14:11 or giving employees the opportunity to chime in and tear down others

14:14 anonymously so you know some of these things are kind of you know not too not

14:20 too great so this was an expose done by the New York Times

14:24 um I mean there's some stuff here that's like quite frankly I send out email at

14:29 all times of night um in fact I have now

14:34 officially sent out an email at night after hours asking for a reply at night

14:39 after hours but it was for their benefit

14:42 it was so that I wouldn't fire

14:46 them I do a Hangouts at like 11:45

14:49 yesterday it was but it was for their benefit I actually gave the employees a

14:52 bit of an early crack at the garage sale items so I told them I needed to know

14:56 what they wanted before we did the garage sale today so and I do send

15:00 emails all times of night but I generally don't expect a reply until

15:04 until the morning um so Amazon's founder says he doesn't

15:10 recognize the company described um refers to shockingly callous management

15:15 practices and urges employees to contact HR or even him if any situation like

15:21 that has occurred he says even if it's rare or isolated our tolerance for such

15:25 a lack of empathy needs to be zero so at

15:28 the very least they're dealing with it internally I mean this is something that

15:32 is really good for me to hear because as many of our viewers know we do a shout

15:36 out to shop on Amazon at the end of almost all of our videos um and we are

15:44 like a major Amazon affiliate partner that's that's a that's a huge huge

15:50 that's been a huge helper for us over the last couple of years since we

15:53 started doing it um so for me to you

15:56 know find out that the company that I don't know if a lot of people know this

16:00 but if you're in a particularly charitable mood and you're buying something on Amazon you don't have to

16:10 smile right yes smile yeah Amazon smile where they'll actually contribute it's a

16:14 smaller percentage then they give Affiliates I think you can do both can

16:17 you do both I think you can do smile dot cuz it's smile Dot and then the tag is

16:21 at the end oh I'm pretty sure you can do both at any rate you know if you guys

16:25 are looking for a way to contribute to a charity of your choice you can actually

16:29 pick your charity and use smile to donate I think it's one or one and a

16:32 half% or something like that of your purchase value so you know they seem

16:36 like pretty good guys it seemed like a

16:40 safe thing for us to call out all the time you hear this stuff about valve and

16:44 everybody y yeah I mean there was that big uh there was that big thing with

16:48 valve employees sort of you know blowing the lid off of you know you think it

16:52 isn't as flat of a structure as you think it is and it's just a boys club

16:55 and like all this kind of stuff like this this happens from every company it

16:58 might be true to a certain degree I'm sure a lot of it is true to a certain

17:03 degree but it's probably exaggerated when told in an

17:06 interview yeah I mean you always need to get both sides of any story

17:11 so okay uh Bitcoin could split in a

17:16 debate over the currency's future but not Dogecoin right yeah we got to get

17:21 hold on we got to get our buddy with the Dogecoin shirt pimping the Dogecoin come

17:59 necessarily A Thing It's All Digital but some people did make them for laws and

18:04 you know people gathered them or something um so basically what's going

18:09 down is there's two sides to bitcoin so there's Bitcoin core the original

18:16 and wait hold on a second okay so

18:19 they're on the side of increasing wallet size Bitcoin XT which is a slight

18:24 variation is lightweight wallets so

18:27 bitcoin's Creator said in 10 it would be nice to keep the blockchain files small

18:32 as long as we can um the eventual solution will be to not care how big it

18:37 gets when I eventually implemented client only mode uh that won't matter

18:42 much anymore but in recent months it's become clear that a small group of

18:47 people have a radically different plan for Bitcoin and that's Bitcoin XT I mean

18:51 what if people couldn't run Bitcoin on their home computers anymore so some of the changes that they want are networks

18:57 of payment routing hubs or something

19:00 along those lines a sharp Ryzen fees they want to end support for mobile P2P

19:05 wallets and give up on unconfirmed

19:09 transactions so it's unknown if people would migrate I mean I think the whole

19:13 digital currency thing continues to be what it is

19:16 it's unproven until except for Dogecoin

19:21 proven except for Dogecoin in which we

19:24 all trust yes um the limit of the

19:28 current system will allegedly be reached by 2017 so we've still got a year plus

19:33 to figure out how this is all going to go down but uh you

19:38 know I guess the thing that I don't really see as any different really here

19:44 is it's yet another competing cryptocurrency yeah so there you go and

19:49 they're all failing and honestly Bitcoin hasn't really been doing that great

19:53 lately either so I mean it had to settle

19:56 down the Gold Rush couldn't go on forever but it I I kind of hoped that it would

20:01 ride long enough that people would actually

20:04 care like cuz there there's a problem with it's hard to spend in a lot of

20:09 different places like someone here was like why don't you accept Bitcoin I was like well cuz it would have taken a

20:14 little bit to set up because none of us have wallets except for me and you don't want them to give me money um I wish you

20:19 did but doesn't work like that at companies well it's all so complicated

20:22 because then that would be personal income to you which then you're respons

20:29 it be that hard but there's going be like people that use it then you guys

20:32 have tot it if you take a while tot it and it falls then it's worth less money

20:35 and then I mean it's one of those things we've meant to kind of do forever but

20:41 it's just easier to not I mean

20:44 honestly I I hash got wrecked by the

20:50 Bitcoin gold rush because back when I was working at ncx like I had access to

20:56 even though I didn't really like have my own building toor in and it wasn't like

21:00 all like mine sort of but I had access to all kinds of awesome gear like back

21:07 when Bitcoins were pretty easy to mine and it was just taking off and I

21:12 actually went and I set up a mining rig

21:15 and I was just like hey well I could set it up at the office and we'll make like

21:20 a tech tips about it and I'll just get my boss's permission so I literally

21:24 wouldn't have been paying for Hardware wouldn't have been paying for

21:27 electricity even and could have mined myself a whack ton of Bitcoins cuz I had

21:32 probably a dozen to two dozen graphics cards and test benches to match could

21:37 have just filled that crap up like before people started you know covering

21:41 walls in their garages with Bitcoin mining Rigs and uh I like I like got

21:49 like a bad stick of RAM in the test bench or something and like it something

21:54 something and I just got lazy and I was like ask it that would have been huge

21:58 cuz he's right it was it was right before the first big boom where it

22:02 jumped up to like what was it 250 bucks or something so they were still worth

22:06 almost nothing and Mining them you got a ton back then so he would have got like

22:11 I could have probably made tens and tens of thousands of dollars like actually so

22:15 I don't reject Bitcoin because I'm bitter

22:20 though but I am a little bitter it's just it's just not why I don't bother

22:25 with it I don't bother with it for the same reasons that I never bothered with

22:28 it I'm just clearly shortsighted it's

22:31 cool it's just yeah I think cryptocurrency will totally be a thing

22:35 at some point I just think it's not right now yeah I mean the good news is

22:38 that some more Forward Thinking companies are at least trying to adapt

22:43 their laws to account for it um others are just completely ignoring it we'll

23:36 ready research lab goof results in four

23:41 times longer lithium ion battery working

23:44 life so some scientists at singua University in Beijing and the

23:48 Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston have been working on techniques

23:52 to extend the working life of lithium ion batteries now to be clear this

23:57 particular research is not to make your

24:00 phone last for you know 3 or 4 days this

24:05 particular technology is to make the battery last for enough recharge cycles

24:10 that you can keep it for longer than a couple of years so this is cool because basically

24:17 what happened is they were working on making the anodes of the battery more

24:22 durable because that's the part that decays the fastest um and that's why

24:27 after a few hundred charge you see a really sharp drop off and all of a

24:31 sudden you know it's 2:00 and you're at

24:35 you know 40% battery life that's why that happens oh and there's a train

24:40 rude so

24:57 to throw it at you oh no this is mine

25:06 both that's weird all right so basically a batch of

25:13 anodes was left under chemical treatment for several hours more than they should

25:18 have completely by accident and remember guys when you're doing lab work you're

25:23 often working with chemicals and like

25:26 engineering like pre reengineering

25:29 sample grade Hardware that is unbelievably expensive to produce I mean

25:34 you guys have no idea even something as simple and stupid as a computer case and

25:39 I don't mean computer cases are stupid I mean they're made of materials we

25:44 basically understand you got a plastic bezel you got your steel chassis you

25:50 fold it up pretty much right I mean

25:53 we're not talking we want the battery to last for four times longer we're going

25:56 to completely re-engineer new a new compound so the stuff they're working

26:01 with is expensive to to screw up a batch

26:07 could cost hundreds or maybe thousands

26:10 or even tens of thousands of dollars depending on what they're working on so

26:14 instead of throwing them away you know someone probably got a slap on the wrist

26:19 but they decided to test them and the results were great four times more

26:24 durable than the current best available

26:27 technology so they've been working on using aluminum in preference to graphite it

26:32 expands and contracts more so in effect these cells let me get this right they

26:36 can't just fold the metal fold the metal no no this is not a computer case okay I

26:41 just need to make sure they can just fold the metal to be very clear they

26:45 can't just injection mold the plastic and then fold the metal and then fold

26:48 the metal on the other side all right cool uh so

26:54 basically so by soaking it in sulfuric acid and titanium oxy sulfate which

26:59 replaces the aluminum oxide from the aluminum being exposed I don't know if

27:03 you guys know this aluminum rust is white and it oxidizes almost immediately

27:07 that's why most people don't even know that aluminum rusts if you polish it and

27:11 clear coat it you can actually make a very efficient mirror out of aluminum

27:16 very interesting stupid fact that no one cares about uh but the reason it always

27:20 looks like rubbish is because it oxidizes almost immediately just from

27:24 being exposed to open air uh so pretty much it's uh it has a much more

27:29 conductive titanium oxide coating effectively now which provided exactly

27:34 the desired results completely by

27:38 accident very very cool so epic awesome

27:41 stuff that guy instead of getting fired got a promotion hoay maybe you got fired and

27:46 then a promotion that' be awesome well you've been fired lots of times I'm sure

27:50 I've promoted you at some point Y now we have a pretty flat from firstand

27:54 experience that it's awesome it's awesome uh so LG's new Nexus 5 has

28:28 they heard us we don't all want a huge phone some of us have tiny hands some of

29:02 G2 yeah uh anyways and being able to type on it with one hand is helpful I

38:17 is that they're using data from Google Maps to figure out basically uh what the

38:22 sun value is of your house I just came up with that word but basically um how

38:26 much of your roof will Sun for how long and how much power and money that will

38:31 save you if you get solar panels installed so that you can figure out

38:34 things like should you get solar panels installed it'll also help you figure out

38:37 how much that will cost um so it can

38:41 survey companies in your area and it can

38:44 actually recommend ones to you tell you how much it'll cost to install tell you

38:51 stuff so basically the idea is taking a lot of the confusion out of getting

42:32 fitness band a semi- smartwatch and then the fully fledged Smartwatch um I think

42:37 the technology has to has to continue to progress a little

42:42 bit I mean Samsung and LG are both showing off transparent OLED displays

42:56 think that's when going to capture a lot of people when you can put a really thin

43:01 transparent display over top of what is otherwise a beautifully crafted

43:06 mechanical watch that's when you're going to get a lot of attention and I

43:11 know there's that one company that's done it that everyone always links us

43:18 good just they're just not you're not feeling charitable today no but it's

58:00 done the explosive exponential growth thing but I've also never leveled off

58:05 it's always been like a slow and steady wins the race and I've I've seen a lot

58:08 of guys that I used to look up to and wonder how I could ever be as big as

58:12 them I've I've seen a lot of those guys

58:16 fall behind in terms of their their YouTube audience anyway um and I think

58:23 there are a lot of different reasons it's happened you know YouTube has

58:27 changed the audience has changed uh the

58:30 technology has changed everything is always changing and the old formula is

58:36 not going to work forever and that is

58:39 why even though it was a huge risk we

58:43 killed unboxings we stopped doing unboxings that was our bread and butter

58:48 it was the single most viewed and

58:51 therefore profitable thing that we did as a company and here I was I took this

58:56 enormous leap of faith I was like okay I'm tired of this that means the

59:00 audience must be tired of it if I'm tired of it so let's let's do it let's

59:03 kill it all we do now is reviews and projects and and showcases so so we

59:09 killed unboxings we switch to almost entirely reviews at that time we are

59:14 actually in the middle of yet another

59:17 reinvention right now um some of you might have noticed we are going to be

59:22 gradually we're still going to do reviews but we are GR gradually making

59:27 it not all about the reviews I see him I have a preview of the video right in

59:30 front of me we are we are gradually moving away from just reviews to more

59:36 projects and like crazy over-the-top you know showcases and

59:40 stuff and more of making Linus Tech tips

59:44 like this this is like the dream for me making Linus Tech tips a show about

64:25 head space ant venom is one of the few that exists out there and what I mean by

64:40 but a lot of the time the guys building the Beast gaming rigs are not actually

64:44 hardcore Gamers like me and the guys

64:47 that are the hardcore gamers are not that techsavvy they just buy a pre-built

64:55 actually took our whole room water cooling concept amped it up a notch and

65:00 has his gaming machine on a separate floor of his house with his Radiator in

65:04 the basement but he did it up right he took everything we learned every mistake

65:09 we made and he published a video on his gaming Centric channel of his Recreation

65:15 of whole room water cooling which works

65:18 it actually gets the heat out of the room successfully because he didn't use

65:22 a huge array of copper tubing to do it he's just got a a nice short run right

65:26 through the floor he used a plastic Reservoir a lesson that we learned about

65:31 anti-corrosive additives and how they don't always work so his video is badass

65:36 I was hoping for him to be here and hang out on the W show but hey the effort

65:46 so how scary was it to take a chance and start your own business doing what you do it was mortifying um I mean this is

65:51 something I'm I'm not sure if I've talked about before but lus Media Group

65:57 almost completely ran out of money uh 4

66:00 months in so I don't know if you guys are super business savvy but the way

66:06 that it works is even if you have a sponsor like Intel or whoever especially

66:14 a big sponsor they don't expect to

66:17 prepay for things so they expect to

66:20 reach an agreement sign a contract like

66:23 okay we're going to have you mention our product in the first 30 seconds of your

66:27 video 10 times in the month of you know

66:31 February and then once you've executed the contract they expect what's called

66:36 net terms so that is they pay after

66:40 completion that gives them time to process it in accounting and get you

66:43 know the necessary signatures and all that stuff and I get it but it means

66:47 that even though lonus Media Group was working hard to obtain sponsors and and

66:52 all that stuff all without selling out I

66:56 mean that's the thing is sellout is a word that gets thrown around a lot but

66:59 it has a meaning that people don't understand sellout doesn't mean you make

67:03 money we make money but sellout means

67:06 making money by compromising your values so we have never taken money from Blue

67:14 to review this microphone that will not happen we can take money from Blue to

67:19 put their microphone in front of our camera while we host the W show that is

67:24 sponsorship that is is a product placement that is completely separate we

67:29 will give a bad review to a sponsor if

67:32 they submit a product to us for a review we have to keep our content which has no

67:37 value to our viewers and therefore no value to a future sponsor I mean even if

67:42 I was a terrible person I can't sell out

67:46 on a product review because I have to be smart enough to know that if my audience

67:51 can be 10 years from now my audience could be 10 times the size then I should

67:56 be able to get 10 times the sponsors but my audience isn't going to grow if I

68:00 give you people bad advice about technology and tell you the wrong thing

68:04 even if I was a terrible money money is the only important thing to me person I

68:08 still wouldn't do it so we had to even

68:12 though we ran out and we got sponsors you know it's harder if you're not

68:16 willing to sell out because you have to be like look this guarantees you no

68:20 special treatment nothing you get nothing other than the ad iing spot that

68:26 we promise that's what you get that's it so we did it anyway it was hard work but

68:31 we did it but I still had to wait anywhere from 30 to 120 days for my

68:38 first paychecks aside from things like YouTube

68:42 which roll in monthly but but isn't as much as you'd think and I and I and I

68:46 took a risk um Luke and Ed both took a

68:51 risk too they dropped out of their programs in school because I promised

68:56 that I would get the money to pay them and support them and we'd make a real

69:00 company out of this thing so they both went for it and I went for it and in

69:06 April of the first year of lus Media Group we almost completely ran out of

69:10 money like out like done like we were down to

69:15 double digits in the account I didn't have another payroll and then the check

69:20 started arriving so it was down to the

69:23 wire for us it was terrifying the good news about what we were doing

69:27 is at least I had a lot of Industry connections and that's another I

69:31 mentioned this earlier on the show but I'll always be thankful for my time at

69:34 NC for all the things I learned and I should have mentioned this all the

69:38 amazing people I met many of whom like

69:42 uh you know I really hope I don't miss anyone here but uh guys like Rick from

69:46 Corsair that was Corsair was our first

69:50 the first ones that ever wrote lonus Media Group Incorporated a check was

70:28 to handle our new gigabit internet connection and it needs a cooling shroud

70:37 couldn't find a way to cool the CPU very well without that shroud which

75:53 you didn't hack gentle this time please yes okay um we learned the first time

75:58 around that's not how you do that you gotta work into it so the hack is not

76:07 details are everywhere they basically said look if you don't pull down your

76:11 site we're going to leak all the data which included credit card information

76:15 now to be clear if you want to check on your significant other or whatever the

76:20 fact that they have an account is actually not meaningful I have an Ashley

76:24 Madison account as soon as we started reporting on the Ashley Madison thing

76:28 someone signed my email address up for

76:31 an Ashley Madison account I've heard I have one but I haven't seen the thing I

76:35 started getting newsletters I was like do people not do email verification

76:41 apparently not so that's a cool thing because it means that there aren't

76:45 necessarily 30 million cheats out there because anyone even someone who has no

76:49 idea they have an account can apparently have an account but they also leaked

76:54 credit card information so if you want to actually use the site

76:57 you need aedit card so if your credit card number in there you Ed the site yes

77:02 so it's taking a lot longer than we originally expected to find all the

77:09 website but it is starting to happen like basically person by person it's

78:34 House media and then it takes like 10 minutes to go through all you know

78:38 thousand of them because it can only do a page at a time like no I just want to

78:49 to use that email um oh I use it as like my password recovery for certain things

79:39 who only know how to reach me there I've had it for like 15 years so it's one of

79:42 those things and that's a tip is to link your emails to a certain degree y it's

79:46 actually a really good idea um so basically there's 10 gigs of Ashley

79:51 Madison info out there it's pretty easy to find uh and they dumped another 20

79:56 gigs onto the dark web in addition to the earlier 10 gigs for a total of
