0:00 VR still has a lot of barriers to overcome cost and both the headset
0:05 itself and the PC required to run it are factors here the fact that you look like
0:09 a complete doof while you're flouncing
0:13 about in the middle of your living room is another one and for that matter here
0:16 we are in the VR space here at lonus Media Group you need a fair bit of space
0:21 in order to even use it but I think more
0:24 people could Overlook these restrictions if it wasn't for the clunky headsets and
0:29 the bulky surprisingly heavy easy to
0:32 tangle and movement restricting tethers
0:36 that tie them to their PC well as most of you know I'm not an
0:41 engineer so there's nothing I can really do about the headset itself but after a
0:47 particularly vigorous round of hollow point the other day I was inspired to
0:51 see if I could do something about the
0:54 cable and once again our friends at
0:57 Corning have come through so today will be trying at least trying anyway to
1:03 replace the entire bulky tether with this durable thin and light optical
1:19 cable cooler Masters masterc case maker 5 features their free form modular
1:24 system allowing you to customize adjust and upgrade make it yours at the link in
1:30 the video description so first things first I got to gather up all the
1:33 supplies I need for what I'm calling
1:36 project light VR cable get it cuz it's
1:40 Optical and it's not as heavy so it starts with that Corning optical cable
1:45 that I mentioned before next we're going to need a gaming computer with support
1:49 for Thunderbolt so while I know the g751
1:53 from ASUS with its 980m graphics card is not technically VR ready this is a proof
1:59 of con not my daily driver rig so this will do just
2:04 nicely however because the HTC Vive and
2:07 the Occulus Rift for that matter do not have Thunderbolt inputs we're actually
2:12 going to need to split out our
2:15 Thunderbolt cable into all the necessary connectors on the other end so for that
2:22 I'll be using the Cal digigit TS2 or really I could use pretty much any
2:27 Thunderbolt dock but what this baby's going to do is give us two usb3 super
2:32 speed ports HDMI and audio exactly what
2:36 we need also I guess there's another USB port there where's my power adapter for
2:41 this
2:44 thing nothing's ever simple it's always a journey toing Mount Doom when we want
2:48 to make a video let's find a 5 amp 12vt
2:53 DC power well I thought the power adapter might be here where I used to
2:57 have that thing set up running to the server room it's not but I did discover
3:01 that I already had one of these optical cables so coring sent me an extra one I
3:04 guess forgot to move that 5V 4
3:11 amp see I'm pretty sure it's
3:16 like straight up non-compliant to not
3:19 have the voltage of an input
3:24 listed okay I found this kte 12vt 3 amp
3:28 thing that fits which I'm hoping is enough because this would be overspeed
3:34 to allow for a bunch of devices to be plugged into all the USB ports and
3:38 everything but speaking of power if we're not going to power the Vive
3:41 through the original tether one of those wires is a is a power cord and we're not
3:46 going to power it through the Thunderbolt cable which we're not
3:49 because optical cables do not carry power we're going to have to do
3:53 something which leads us to the last ingredients of our setup a small
3:57 backpack this was the smallest one we had lying around the office and I'm not
4:00 buying a backpack for this and for some reason I thought I needed
4:05 two so two battery Banks one of which
4:08 actually has an AC power outlet okay so
4:11 I lied that wasn't everything we needed but I found the things we need a short
4:16 USB 3 a TOA cable a short HDMI cable and
4:21 this is fun I remembered what the second power bank is for so that one's to
4:26 hopefully go DC to DC to power the
4:30 itself because it's got a
4:33 12v something amps we're not quite sure
4:37 uh max power input however both of our battery banks
4:42 are dead so we're going to charge these
4:45 up for the night and we'll get back at this tomorrow so we're back now when I
4:50 originally conceived this project I actually thought I was going to have to
4:54 cut off the tether and then resolder all the individual wires and like figure F
4:59 out which ones were carrying which signals and whatever and all that but
5:05 you know silly me I had no idea that the HTC
5:12 Vive I mean you can see why it took me a little while to sort this out the HTC VI
5:17 actually just has all the
5:21 inputs as plugs up at the
5:24 top there we go
5:29 just like that so two USBS one of which
5:33 I think has uh functionality TBD HDMI
5:37 power and 3 and 1/2 mm so
5:41 theoretically it's as simple as going from
5:45 here oh wow okay theoretically uh we've
5:49 already hit one stumbling block this doesn't physically
5:54 fit
5:57 um so theoretically it's as simple as going from here
6:03 into our Thunderbolt
6:10 Hub wow that is not a very long cable
6:14 H so we've got another challenge as well
6:17 between all the different adapters that come with our RAV Power extreme series
6:22 Power Bank only one of them is even kind
6:26 of close to fitting so we would either have to cut off and rece a compatible
6:34 adapter or we'll have to rely on using
6:39 the AC outlet one and a power squid or a
6:42 power brick in order to power both the
6:45 Vive as well as the Cal digit box
6:48 meaning that our battery life will be somewhat more limited 3 and 1 12 mm
6:52 audio cable should fit though at
6:55 least oh it's a right angle connector
7:00 nope even plugging my headphones in directly isn't going to work okay so
7:04 it's back to the drawing board somewhat here hopefully this is one of those
7:07 things where it gets Messier before it gets better let's go see if we can find
7:13 a low profile HDMI cable
7:17 oh never cut towards your fingers well
7:20 I'll give mono price this their HDMI cables are tough obviously I tried to
7:26 find a lower profile connector one first but failing that I well took the one we
7:31 had and threw it in the vice about 10
7:35 minutes of hacking away at it later and
7:39 it's uglier but it fits wow that is a
7:44 tight fit we might be back in Action here it was at that point that I
7:48 realized we didn't have Thunderbolt drivers the updated NVIDIA drivers or
7:52 the software for the HTC Vive installed so we took a short break while I got all
7:57 the software up to date so we have a small problem if I'm
8:03 plugged into the HDMI connection on the Cal digit box we're getting a compositor
8:07 not available error in Steam VR but if I plug directly
8:12 into the HDMI out on the computer we're good now there is still hope it's
8:16 possible that we can use the Thunderbolt daisy chain Port here to run HDMI over
8:21 DisplayPort into either directly into the headset or into the splitter box
8:27 that's included with the Vive but I'm really not sure if that's going to work
8:31 so stay tuned so we're going to try this
8:36 again going from
8:39 Thunderbolt to DVI to
8:43 HDMI okay let's try
8:46 again so just as a troubleshooting
8:54 step I'm going to go back to the HDMI
8:58 output right off the
9:03 computer and into this box so let's make sure that it works if
9:08 we do that so I've reached a very challenging
9:13 point in the troubleshooting I have just tried to connect it the vanilla
9:18 recommended way with the normal tether and running through the connector box
9:24 and it's still not working but get this when I take a standalone HDM my cable
9:30 and plug that directly into the computer
9:33 oh whatever take my word for it the headset comes up and it starts working
9:38 so I'm starting to think this might be a combination of issues where the
9:41 Thunderbolt implementation yeah there see there it is ready where the Thunderbolt implementation of this
9:46 laptop might use the onboard Graphics that is a very very likely situation
9:52 and my box might be
9:56 dead but as long as there is any potential for a problem to be solved by
10:01 simply throwing more Hardware at it I'm still in the game so I went home I got a
10:07 mini DisplayPort to HDMI I knew I had one of these turns out that's where it
10:12 was I got a different Thunderbolt two
10:16 dock I got the connector hub from my own
10:19 Vive and just for good
10:23 measure I brought my personal rig back
10:26 to the office because this one I know
10:29 for sure because there's a physical damn cable going from my GTX titanx to the
10:35 Thunderbolt card this one runs off of
10:38 the dedicated graphics let's
10:42 go I suddenly remember
10:46 why we moved to aluminum so it's update
10:50 time the Box isn't dead and the Vive is
10:54 running perfectly off of my
10:57 machine now let's try going back to Thunderbolt see no
11:05 okay wait a minute oh my God I don't
11:09 have the Thunderbolt see I'm flustered
11:12 now okay what's this interesting it says ready let's
11:19 restart in direct mode wow wouldn't it be amazing if it
11:23 was that simple I don't see anything
11:27 though that was very abrupt yep we
11:30 didn't know when we were shooting this video it was going to be a two-parter so
11:35 there you go it is so it's summer where
11:39 you board Planes Trains and maybe even
11:42 Tak an a car somewhere to leave your
11:46 worries behind and today's lack of online privacy brings out your inner
11:50 grizzly bear wow these are new notes they're very funny if that happens then
11:55 you should try tunnel bear tunnel bear is the simple VPN app that makes it easy
12:00 to browse privately and enjoy a more open internet with tunnel bear turned on
12:05 your Wi-Fi connection is secured and your online activity is kept private
12:09 from your internet provider advertisers hackers and anyone sitting behind you on
12:14 the train actually know if you are watching questionable content on the
12:18 train people will definitely be able to see that it's only like digital spying
12:22 that tunnel bear protects you from tunnel bear has a top rated privacy
