0:00 at CES 2014 curved TVs were all the rage
0:05 at least if you ask someone who manufactures
0:08 TVs as a techie with my journalism hat
0:12 on I was interested in the technology behind it OLED displays are thin and
0:16 they're light they offer Fast Response times Amazing Black levels better energy
0:20 efficient and now they're able to be curved this unlocks amazing new form
0:25 factors for devices with screens you can wrap around your wrist and bed as a
0:29 heads up display on a windshield or helmet and so much
0:33 more unfortunately when it was time to put my general consumer who has to
0:38 actually spend money on this stuff hat on I concluded that at least in their
0:42 current form curv display TVs leave a lot to be desired there are a lot of
0:48 theoretical benefits being promoted by marketing folks including better
0:52 immersion and more natural viewing experience with references being made to
0:56 other situations where curved screens are already used most notably in
1:00 projection movie theaters the issue with this is that the benefits of curved
1:05 displays in theaters that is to say pin cushion reduction improved brightness
1:09 uniformity and the ability to have an image wrap around the viewer as it fills
1:13 up a huge portion of their field of view none of this has anything to do with a
1:18 55 in non- projection TV that's going to sit in your living room there is some
1:23 promotion of curv screen technology that might have some basis in reality uh that
1:27 it reduces eye fatigue by ensuring every every part of the screen is an equal
1:31 distance from the viewer's eye meaning there's no need to refocus when looking
1:34 from one part of the screen to the other but even that claim has some serious
1:39 problems with the current product offerings in order for the eye to be an
1:42 equal distance from every part of the panel you would have to be sitting in
1:46 exactly The Sweet Spot Not only dead center in front of the TV but also at
1:51 the correct distance so you're in the middle of a theoretical Circle that
1:54 would be formed by the curvature of your TV Dennis Berger from home techel looked
1:59 at one of LG's of TVs and determined you would have to be 11 ft from it for the
2:03 positioning to be optimal I mean I guess you could sit there but what if you
2:08 wanted to watch a movie with a group of friends someone is going to get the
2:12 short straw and end up with a picture that's not only not better than a flat
2:16 TV but actually distorted and worse and
2:19 the real world drawbacks only start with the required exact seating position for
2:24 a non-distorted image they they don't wall mount for now and they are
2:28 extremely expensive compared to Flat Alternatives the worst part of all this
2:32 is that both LG and Samsung were already showing off 21 by9 aspect ratio 100 plus
2:39 inch Ultra HD curved screens that genuinely made the technology compelling
2:44 as if to say look we know it's pointless right now but just bear with us for a
