0:00 Shortly after we posted our Model M keyboard video,
0:03 we received a ton of requests
0:06 to review what some have called the Model M of India,
0:11 the TVS Gold.
0:13 It's a durable value mechanical keyboard
0:16 with cherry switches, sort of,
0:18 that's been around for many years
0:19 and can be found all over India,
0:22 in banks, offices, or uncle's den.
0:25 Unfortunately, it is not that easy
0:27 to get your hands on in Canada,
0:29 so we embarked on a months-long journey,
0:31 including the help of the extended family members
0:35 of one of our viewers to actually get one.
0:38 But with changes in quality and price
0:42 and competition from China,
0:44 is the TVS Gold as good a deal as it used to be?
0:48 Let's find out.
0:50 Speaking of gold, private internet access, it's gold,
0:54 but not like expensive like gold,
0:55 it's just really good like gold.
0:57 Go get it, it protects you when you're online.
1:09 So here I've got an original Model M from 1986
1:12 and a TVS Gold from June, 2018.
1:15 Now, it's pretty obvious that the TVS Gold
1:18 took some design cues from the Model M,
1:21 like the lock lights, for example.
1:23 They are identical,
1:25 but there are some notable differences though,
1:28 like this ridge, for example,
1:30 that you can use to hold a pencil or even two pencils.
1:34 Also, the plastics themselves are pretty different.
1:38 Now, Model M's were made with durable, high quality plastics,
1:41 including PBT key caps.
1:43 By contrast, both the key caps
1:46 and the chassis of the TVS Gold
1:48 are made of the more common ABS plastic,
1:50 which can get that kind of that polished shiny look over time
1:54 from the oils in your hands.
1:55 So we were able to confirm this with a quick acetone test.
1:59 Going further, we can also see
2:01 that the white lettering is coming off,
2:03 even though the letter outline remains.
2:04 That's because the legend on the TVS Gold is laser etched,
2:09 which essentially means that it's got a groove
2:12 burned in the top of the key cap.
2:14 Then in this case, it's filled in with a colorant.
2:17 So this kind of lettering isn't the most durable,
2:20 but it's much better than pad printing,
2:22 which is what most budget keyboards use.
2:24 So it should last you reasonably well,
2:26 even in a professional environment.
2:28 The next thing that a lot of TVS Gold users talk about
2:31 is the layout.
2:33 Now,
2:34 at first glance,
2:35 it looks like it has the same North American key layout
2:39 that was pioneered by the Model M,
2:41 but it actually has a bigger enter key
2:44 and a smaller backspace key,
2:47 which that second one in particular
2:49 can be really frustrating if you're not used to it.
2:52 I actually experienced this for myself on SteelSeries' 7G.
2:57 Though with that said,
2:58 you shouldn't confuse this layout
3:00 with the European ISO layout,
3:04 because it's not a major key.
3:06 No, no.
3:06 This one is actually a special layout
3:08 called IndicScript or InScript,
3:11 which was ratified by the government of India
3:13 in the early 1990s.
3:14 And it's designed to work with 12 different Indian scripts.
3:19 This keyboard, by the way,
3:20 was also the first one ever
3:22 to have the Indian rupee sign printed on the legend.
3:24 Though you may find yourself needing to go through
3:27 some extra steps in order to actually get it working.
3:30 Now let's talk about the typing experience.
3:33 TVS Gold keyboards shipped with Cherry MX Blue key switches.
3:38 So these are high quality German engineered switches
3:41 with a clicky, tactile feel and a distinctive sound
3:45 that makes them beloved by typists the world over.
3:48 And the fact that a keyboard that you could usually find
3:51 for between 1,700 and 2,300 rupees
3:54 came with real Cherry switches was almost a miracle,
3:59 except for one small problem.
4:01 Sometime near the end of 2017,
4:03 let me try and pop this in,
4:04 I'm gonna pop one of these off.
4:05 Oh, you're not supposed to do it like this.
4:08 Yeah, yeah, get off you bastard.
4:14 Ah, yes, here we go.
4:17 Wait, Longhua?
4:19 They own Kail.
4:21 Do they? Good.
4:22 TVS stopped shipping Golds with Cherry switches
4:25 with all of the new boards getting equipped
4:28 with Chinese clones made by Kail.
4:32 Now to be clear, the Kail Blue switches are still mechanical
4:36 and they actually use
4:38 the same design as the Cherries.
4:39 You might say they ripped them off.
4:41 So they still have that clicky feel.
4:43 And if this is your first mechanical keyboard,
4:45 you'll probably love them,
4:47 but it kind of raises the question.
4:50 In a world where budget mechanical keyboards
4:53 are becoming more and more available,
4:55 is the TVS Gold still even a good deal?
4:58 Especially considering that the price has moved up
5:01 rather than down into the 2,700 to 3,500 rupee range.
5:07 I mean, at that price,
5:07 why not get a keyboard from Cosmic Byte or Red Gear
5:11 that has more switch options, an updated look,
5:14 gaming features like anti-ghosting and Windows Key Lock,
5:17 not to mention fricking RGB.
5:20 So then, given the recent decrease in switch quality
5:24 and increase in price,
5:25 the TVS Gold is no longer the outstanding value
5:28 that it once was, especially considering the competition.
5:32 But that doesn't mean that it's a bad keyboard.
5:35 So if you like the vintage look and you won't be bothered too
5:37 much by the shortened backspace key,
5:39 then the TVS Gold is still a classic in its own right.
5:43 Just be sure to order from Amazon,
5:45 even if it's cheaper at your local computer shop.
5:47 That way you'll get a one-year warranty
5:49 to protect you from their easily crushed boxes.
5:53 Speaking of easily crushed,
5:55 I'll be crushed if you don't listen
5:57 to this message from Pulseway.
5:59 Pulseway is a real-time remote monitoring
