0:00 today's video was inspired by a post on the forum by ashley ashes who asked the
0:05 rest of our community if you could use laptop memory in a desktop system it
0:11 turns out you can get adapters unlike ebay
0:14 but is that really gonna work only one way to find out
0:19 one way to find out one way to find out
0:26 private internet access is the vpn service that encrypts all your internet
0:30 traffic and uses a safe protected ip it's got tons of other useful features
0:34 as well so check it out now at the link below all right so let's start i guess
0:38 by taking a closer look at these things they're made by i believe the company is
0:43 actually called jet and this is their part number you can actually get them in
0:46 a wide variety of different configurations these ones we found on
0:50 ebay and are designed for ddr4 sodiums
0:55 to a ddr4 full-sized dim now
0:59 you might think to yourself well what's to not work about this i can put
1:03 a micro sd card into a and full size sd
1:07 adapter no one's bewildered and baffled by this
1:11 but the reason this is such a big deal is come in and have a closer look
1:15 sodiums are a 200 contact point standard
1:20 full-size dimms actually have
1:24 288 so on here we've got a couple of
1:27 different things we've got whatever the hell a virtual fuse is apparently it's
1:32 patented we've got a jumper i mean there's no manual obviously so i'm going
1:37 to assume the defaults are fine
1:40 all right so let's shut down and
1:44 while i wait for Windows update apparently uh let's talk about the challenge and
1:48 show you guys how to install it i already put together one of them but you
1:51 want to kind of go in at an angle like that push it down make sure everything's
1:55 in there fully then you put a little bit of tension on
1:58 it just like that now
2:02 i am actually asking more from the adapter i want to see a couple of things
2:07 i want to see if we can get these sticks to run in
2:11 quad channel with the existing
2:14 3200 megahertz ddr4 that's on this platform
2:18 and i want to see if i can get the whole
2:22 thing to still run at 3 200 megahertz because it's one thing if you can
2:28 get memory you know working and recognized it's another if this adapter
2:33 is not interfering with its performance that looks
2:37 ridiculous you know we've had conversations internally about how hard
2:41 it is to build an ugly computer these days now that every motherboard has a
2:44 black pcb and all that kind of stuff but
2:49 bye jove i think we've done it okay
2:53 let's see what happens did we fail already postcode 55. uh well
2:58 then code 55 means no RAM installed
3:03 which is fairly discouraging because there
3:06 definitely is RAM installed even aside
3:09 from these uh so dim to dim adapters so
3:12 i'm gonna try reseeding them from the old wiggle wiggle
3:19 and then firing it up again
3:22 balls did you test this before we started filming the video
3:26 no okay i'm going to try the memo k button
3:29 i've never used it successfully shut up brandon
3:34 okay let's try clear seamos then
3:38 come on baby we're gonna try next is pulling out the
3:43 mismatched memory i mean admittedly that was a bit of a long shot in the first
3:47 place okay here we go that's very interesting
3:52 16 gigs of memory let's get it booted up so for fire up
3:57 task manager we've got all 16 gigs of
4:00 our memory it knows that they're so dim
4:03 so i don't know if it's reading that off the spd chip
4:08 or if i mean it must be it must be because how would Windows have any way
4:12 of knowing okay so we're just finishing up the ida
4:15 64 cache and memory benchmark and there's a couple more interesting things
4:19 here we are in fact running in dual
4:22 channel mode so that's good but only at stock speeds not the higher
4:28 xmp speeds of our modules and also interesting is that our read and write
4:33 numbers look about like you'd expect from ddr4 2133 in dual channel mode this
4:39 is weird so our memory is showing up as
4:42 ddr4 2400 megahertz
4:45 but i don't know where it's reading that from because
4:49 these adapters shouldn't have any logic on them whatsoever
4:53 but but there you have it it's set but when we were in the operating system
4:57 just now i didn't change anything we were at 21.33
5:01 so here's what we're going to do we're not going to try and run at 3800 that's
5:05 not realistic but let's try
5:08 sort of high speed like 3000 megahertz and see if we can get
5:12 there it's boot looping right now you can tell
5:16 because we keep going through the same sequence of postcodes here
5:21 okay let's try something a little less aggressive 26 66 megahertz wouldn't be
5:27 like a performance memory kit or anything when this was current but
5:32 like it would be decent middle of the road hey
5:36 there we go all right so this is moment of truth time what we want to see is if
5:40 going from 2133 to 2666
5:44 gives us an improvement yes it does
5:48 okay not bad
5:52 so you won't be running at the bleeding edge but
5:55 you should expect it to work bringing us to
6:01 what is often the most challenging part
6:04 of these kinds of videos where you know it's like yeah you could adapt your
6:09 trailer hitch to a office chair
6:13 you can but should you
6:18 so this thing then no one should go out of their way to use
6:23 one of these if you've got a desktop you should buy desktop memory and install
6:27 desktop memory in it and if you've got a laptop then well there's no adapter the
6:32 other way around because a full-size dim physically wouldn't wouldn't fit in
6:36 there but i can see situations where they
6:40 could come in handy like let's say for example that you've got an older laptop
6:44 that you're looking to upgrade well a lot of them might come with you know two
6:50 eight gig sticks in them and then you might go okay well i don't
6:54 want 16 gigs i want 32 in order to upgrade it you've got to go
6:58 buy two new 16 gig sticks and then you've got to take out your old
7:02 ones so if you were looking to give those parts a new lease on life
7:07 two jets credit i actually don't even know who makes these things to their credit
7:12 these are inexpensive and from our testing while not high performance
7:16 functional so not recommended to need them
7:22 but recommended if you need them to go ahead and pick them up
7:27 speaking of going ahead and picking something up why not picking up a
7:32 subscription to freshbooks freshbooks is the online cloud-based accounting
7:36 solution that makes it easier to run your small business or freelance
7:40 operation you can create and send professional looking invoices in less
7:45 than 30 seconds you can set up online payments to get paid up to four days
7:49 faster you can see when your client has seen your invoice to put an end to the
7:53 guessing games once and for all and you can track your expenses you can log your
7:58 hours and you can do those things while you're on the go which is really
8:02 cool their Android and iOS apps are
8:05 fully featured with all the functionality of the desktop platform so
8:09 don't take my word for it try freshbooks for free for 30 days by going to
