0:00 what on earth would a real life gaming school look like well
0:05 we're here at yong ping vocational high school in taoyuan city taiwan where they
0:10 are currently accepting applicants for the brand new gaming program that will
0:15 officially open its doors in september of 2018 so
0:20 i guess we're gonna find out
0:23 after this message from our sponsor private internet access it's the vpn
0:29 that's entirely self-explanatory it makes your access to the internet more
0:34 private look at the link in the video description to learn more
0:45 it's been a long time since i've had to go to the principal's office and
0:49 it was never voluntarily but
0:53 as a parent i've got a lot of questions walking into
0:58 something like this
1:01 but while i might have started out thinking excuse me
1:05 gaming school i learned a lot during my meeting with
1:08 the principal first of all youngping is one of 400 vocational schools in taiwan
1:14 and is now ranked in the top 10 with around 6 000 students so they do a lot
1:19 more than just gaming and i also learned that at this time there isn't a
1:25 full-time gaming track any of the 100 or
1:28 so students who will be accepted into the gaming program
1:31 will be expected to pick another of the
1:34 vocations they offer like automotive repair food graphic design or tourism as
1:40 um sort of like a double major so to make the obvious joke it is not
1:46 all fun and games and the gaming program will be very demanding to ensure that
1:52 students have the right mindset not only are the administrators and coaches going
1:56 to be looking at traditional acceptance requirements like grades on taiwan's
2:00 standardized tests but they're also going to be interviewing applicants and
2:04 even yes you knew this one was coming
2:08 conducting tryouts with their gaming coaches to evaluate their skills and
2:12 that is skills with the zed now the school already has an
2:17 extracurricular esports team with a coaching staff of retired players and
2:21 they're building partnerships with affiliated local teams like j team and
2:25 ms that will allow students to apply for esports internships
2:30 but to make the experience more school-like they're going to have to
2:34 think outside the box a little bit and beef up their staff to cover not
2:38 just how to play video games but also a broad range of gaming industry related
2:43 subjects so as a private school they have the luxury
2:48 to build their curriculum so students will learn to build and troubleshoot
2:52 their pcs they'll study the different pc components and their effects on gaming
2:56 performance they will learn principles of game streaming on platforms like
3:00 twitch and even attend classes for less
3:04 obvious things like the history of esports and gaming and some pr and
3:09 marketing fundamentals so inside here is one of their regular
3:13 classrooms where gaming program students will learn traditional core subjects
3:18 like chinese math english and history
3:22 and also where for example a tourism
3:25 double major student would study japanese but
3:30 that is not to say that they won't also have a real bonafide overwatch class
3:36 where they'll cover map analysis character pros and cons individual
3:41 strategies and techniques and the teamwork and communication principles
3:45 that are necessary for success in the highly competitive esports scene along
3:49 with yes actual homework assignments like
3:52 achieve and maintain gold rank in overwatch as you can imagine it would
3:56 probably be beneficial to have sessions in a computer lab to practice the
4:01 techniques that are being presented by the instructor
4:04 and i don't mean a computer lab like this one
4:08 i'm talking about one like this
4:12 this room cost 300
4:16 000 to build and they'll be adding another one just like it before the
4:21 students arrive in the fall and man this kind of computer lab would have been my
4:25 dream in high school there are about 25 gaming machines in here equipped with
4:30 core i5 processors and gtx 1060 6gb
4:34 video cards they've got a vr gaming space right smack dab in the middle of
4:38 the room and they've got a fantastic streaming setup in here including RGB
4:43 out gaming themed decor pan tilt zoom cameras for the players and the
4:48 commentators and a quad tv setup down at
4:51 the end for spectating in person like these guys do not mess around they've
4:56 got like 75 hertz monitors cherry mx
5:00 blue gaming keyboards pretty much the freaking
5:04 works wow but as cool as it all is
5:09 i wouldn't be surprised if the majority of you still think video game high
5:13 school makes more sense as a web video series than as an actual thing for you
5:18 i've got a challenge why don't you try thinking about it a slightly different
5:22 way so in the same way that not everyone who
5:26 enrolls in a cooking vocational program will become a world famous chef
5:31 not everyone who enrolls in this gaming program will become a champion esports
5:36 player and that's okay because there's a lot more to the gaming
5:40 industry as a whole than just playing
5:44 games competitively these days gaming bars are growing in
5:49 popularity gaming and food program anyone
5:53 gaming hotels are starting to spring up gaming and tourism sounds like a great
5:58 background for that kind of work and the gaming organizations that used to
6:02 subsist on scraps are now playing tournaments in major sports arenas with
6:07 organizations like epic games committing a hundred million dollars of funding and
6:12 prize money towards their games it's crazy
6:17 even within the computer hardware industry remember these are the companies that make
6:22 gaming gear i have personally experienced a huge need for
6:26 representatives who actually understand gaming and gamers to help their
6:31 companies address the growing market that they represent you can learn about
6:35 gaming after you enter the workforce but
6:38 if you know that that's what you want to do with your life
6:42 then this whole thing here
6:45 starts to make a lot more sense
6:48 and i still haven't even mentioned the connections element this is a huge and
6:54 often undervalued part of choosing the right school
6:57 attending a vocational school means that you graduate with a large cohort of
7:02 passionate people with similar aspirations who can work together to get
7:06 into the careers that they want and support each other as they enter the
7:09 workforce so i walked in here a skeptic
7:14 and i still have my doubts i'm sure there's a lot of work to be done but it
7:18 makes far more sense to me walking out than it did walking in so i guess i got
7:24 taken to school today
7:28 terrible but you know what's not terrible
