0:00 so isu sends us this email they're like hey do you guys want to check out our
0:04 latest and game gadis
0:07 do you want to check out our latest and greatest hulking monstrosity of a gaming
0:11 laptop the g703g
0:15 i think it's got two g's for like gg for like your opponents won't know what hit
0:19 him because it weighs like a thousand pounds
0:24 anyway we've kind of been into the thin and light thing lately so we message
0:28 back we're like well what's special about it and they go oh well it's got
0:34 six cores and it overclocks to five gigahertz and we were like
0:40 oh okay let's take it for a spin
0:54 thermaltake's view 37 mid tower case has a fully modular design and can support
0:59 up to an eatx motherboard check it out at the link below to learn more all
1:04 right so we've got a sneaking suspicion that we are going to need some extra
1:08 gear in order to make a five gigahertz overclock stick
1:12 so while alex sets that up over here i am going to unbox this monstrosity
1:19 that is heavy uh right around here so it's all ready
1:24 wow this thing is thick i mean just to put it in perspective
1:29 this is an ultrabook for scale that is a razer blade stealth and that
1:34 is the g703g i think this thing is even thicker than the gx800 isn't it uh
1:41 about the same i would say the same all right and the gx800 though had dual
1:46 1080s in sli in it i mean that's one critical difference
1:50 this one's only got a single gtx 1080
1:55 with that said though we do understand why they need all of this thickness and
2:00 that's because even though the GPU power might not be as much it's actually
2:05 running an Intel core i9 CPU so this is
2:09 one of the first laptops out in the wild with an Intel core i9 6 core mobile CPU
2:16 and the first one that we've seen that
2:19 is over clockable
2:22 holy crap like it feels like it's on a platform it's so high above the desk
2:29 this is crazy these overclockable beasts according to
2:33 ASUS go from 45 watts
2:37 up to a whopping 160
2:41 watts depending on the load that is why they need a thicker chassis
2:46 even though they've only got one graphics card so we suspect that we're gonna need some
2:52 uh cooling augmentation that's where blowing matron over here potentially
2:57 comes in later that's the fastest laptop we've ever
3:00 seen so far so beautiful teen
3:04 in cinebench yeah so that ryzen laptop was 13.99 or
3:09 so and that thing was an eight core processor i mean let's take a closer
3:14 look at this thing got your usb look how small a usb port looks next to it sd
3:20 card oh got an Ethernet Thunderbolt usb this and
3:25 then check this out HDMI mini displayport
3:29 every single one of these vents you can even
3:32 see the heat pipe sticking out there every single one of these is full of
3:38 these dense dense cooling fins
3:41 and the fans inside are no slouches either
3:44 check this out okay when i got my mic close to it hit it you can really hear
3:48 them spin up there goes a benchmark
3:59 are we in over boost mode right now
4:03 very nice so how how hot is this right now 99
4:08 degrees yes 99 degrees
4:11 yep even when it sounds like that so we
4:14 got 1.427 volts on the core right there or 1.39 was the
4:19 highest but it's running at like four up to 4.8
4:23 gigahertz yeah so that's like pretty crazy
4:28 okay but can it hold that speed
4:32 at 99 degrees i think it's going down to like 4.3 4.4
4:38 something like that okay so what's our next step why does it
4:42 have a dedicated xbox button we want the rog gaming center right yeah okay go in
4:47 full manual so apply manual yes we know
4:50 you can damage your stuff and now you just want to get rid of that and restart it because it's it's just
4:54 bad all around okay so i noticed you forgot to bring tape
4:59 before for our diy shroud
5:03 what do we need tape for for our diy shroud
5:07 um we take duct tape
5:11 and we kind of like it's called duct tape so we build a duct
5:15 do that and then we put a blowing metronome on there well we wanted we'd
5:19 want the blowing matron like down here wouldn't we so then there it's helping the fans not
5:24 blowing against them no no it would suck out oh i see what should be yeah we need
5:29 another power supply this thing can't provide enough power for four blowing
5:32 matrons they each draw five amps
5:42 this is so stupid here's where we're gonna find out how
5:46 well it handles it with just its own fans right like in fairness to the laptop if it if
5:51 it does it okay then we won't need any of this stuff
5:54 it's not going to yeah i don't think it's going to either um so
5:58 what do we want here one point seven one point two seven two not 1.7
6:05 can we make the turbo boost power max 100 and yo yeah it can go up to 200
6:09 according to its own defaults all right that's uh yeah 215 seems fine
6:17 apply that
6:20 laptops laptops were not made for this kind of thing
6:26 that moment when you need an external 750 watt power supply to run your laptop
6:31 just the fans just just for the fans
6:36 oh we're gonna have to secure those somehow
6:40 4.8 gigahertz at 1.27 volts it's been
6:44 stable for the last 20 seconds which i think is good enough that's pretty good
6:47 stability testing yeah good work okay so we're gonna try five
6:51 what's the CPU temp right now it's like 93.
6:55 yeah i wonder if we just run cinebench now though if it'll be better
7:00 blue screen all right do you want to just say screw
7:05 faffing around with this and just liquid metal it right now one more fine tune oh
7:09 sure all right let's liquid metal it
7:12 ah oh my finger no don't squeeze it together like a typical ifixit tear down
7:17 is like so professional and like there's just like two guys reaming on a laptop
7:23 oh
7:36 did you hear a screw fall meanwhile this is the battery
7:41 you don't buy a gaming laptop for the stellar battery life alright so there's
7:45 our GPU gtx 1080 and i haven't seen this
7:49 in a long time the CPU that core i9 CPU
7:52 has the same number of heat pipes to it as the entire GPU GPU vrm and GPU memory
7:59 oh that's cool here's the uh it's got a built-in xbox controller doodad um i
8:05 think the whole assembly has to come off yeah they went through the bottom of
8:08 that boy all right well that's one way to do it
8:12 both the CPU and the GPU have some kind of a barrier on them already so we've
8:17 got four phase power over here and then we've got this
8:21 gigantic rectangular die and then this
8:24 like trippy rectangular package so you can see here the pci express link to the
8:30 GPU is just right there on the surface level
8:33 of pcb we're gonna do the GPU while we're in
8:36 here right oh yeah okay cool
8:40 oh right i forgot about that side so next step is to get some liquid metal
8:44 prepared oh i dropped it on my hand ah it burns
8:48 no i'm just kidding yeah you can eat that stuff and you'll be fine really
8:51 yeah that's cool i wouldn't recommend it
8:58 gallium is fine though to eat like it's safe but it's fine watch
9:05 well people always say like could you cool a person with liquid
9:08 metal no who says that what are you talking about people on the forums all
9:13 the time it's still beating in a big way
9:16 it's probably just not warm enough whereas the CPU was sitting in my hand
9:20 like this the whole time oh yeah yeah okay so as long as we put this on
9:25 perfectly we won't get any excess liquid metal all over anything
9:29 and what ASUS is going to think watching this all right let's put this thing back
9:33 together so the cooler is back on so technically we could run a test now
9:38 it doesn't have storage in it that's fine no it seems easy
9:42 yeah i'm sure they'll work without screws no we can flip it over it should
9:45 be okay we could also just put the bottom on it
9:50 alex you only live once this laptop might only live once
9:55 see yeah
10:01 it booted well let's do it you're only going to
10:04 give it 1.3 it's not going to be stable i think that'll be fine at 1.3
10:09 all right just
10:13 start testing
10:16 okay i guess you're right a little bit
10:21 okay 1.45 this time 1.45 all right
10:30 it's beautiful oh it is
10:34 oh wow that is beautiful right there way better
10:39 five gigahertz 80 degrees
10:42 holy crap why is the score lower
10:46 what just happened oh wait it says this is maximum oh no
10:50 current current correct way down it's way down we're looking at the wrong damn
10:54 column oh the powermax is at 160 watts
10:58 let's just unlimit all the things okay and trying again
11:02 okay it is still hitting the current limit though it is too i think we need to drop the
11:07 voltage oh yeah 3.9 this one hits this one's
11:11 hitting four point something okay we have to drop the voltage
11:15 boom
11:23 all right unstable
11:27 two 0.425 let's split the difference
11:34 oh currently wait oh we're right we're riding the line
11:39 and we're hitting 94 degrees oh is that
11:42 our fastest yet yup i think so yep okay so let's try 1.415
11:48 this seems to be a matter of just finding exactly
11:52 the right balancing point it's thermal throttling now but now it's thermal
11:57 throttling oh that was even higher that's even this is our highest score
12:00 yet we almost broke 1500 in cinebench so now all we have to do is
12:05 cool it down a bit more yep okay
12:09 bring on the blowy matrons you want black or you want gray i'll take black
12:13 all right let's do this should we shut her down for now does it
12:16 need to be shut down uh well why don't we investigate a little bit first
12:20 there's three heat pipes from the CPU to this one so this is clearly the main
12:25 CPU cooler yeah so really though this is the only one
12:30 that we have to beef up probably build out
12:34 some bottom ducts like this and then it will it can stick to that so
12:38 that it's less likely to uh how far do we want to fall over i think that's good
12:42 all right okay so this is a bit of a delicate operation
12:46 well that looks perfectly legitimate yeah
12:49 i see nothing wrong with this this might just work should we like slowly ramp it
12:52 up what okay so you're just thinking full force
12:57 free from the gecko 38
13:02 37.
13:09 so we just dropped like six degrees
13:12 at idle yeah let's go let's go i want to put
13:15 another one on i don't even think we're gonna need it
13:19 really yeah cause remember too this one's probably gonna suck from the other
13:23 one too true let's go go ahead hit it all right
13:32 are you even at 12 volt can you go higher
13:37 so 16 volts all right
13:41 okay here we go
13:45 70 82
13:48 oh is it gonna hold i think it's gonna hold
13:53 i think it's gonna hold 92.94
13:58 come on baby finish
14:02 come on come on
14:10 no way we got 69 in there too i know right
14:15 we hit like 94 degrees
14:19 and no throttling five gigahertz in a laptop
14:24 thanks to redneck engineering and blowing matron you guys saw it here
14:29 first do you want to try 5.1
14:34 i i don't know if my heart could take it
14:38 sure
14:41 all right
