0:00 last time we tried d-lidding the process
0:03 of removing the heat spreader from a CPU
0:07 we decided that it wasn't really worth the effort
0:11 the voided warranty on a brand new 300
0:14 processor or the risk
0:18 but it has since come to our attention that
0:21 while x-acto knives are a fun if a little dangerous tool for
0:26 de-litting there is a much better way to go about it
0:32 so then with the der bauer d-lidding tools in
0:36 hand for both lga 1151 and
0:41 2066 that's right my friends we're gonna get
0:45 naked with a core i9
0:48 we're going to re-evaluate d-litting
0:52 should you do it
1:03 synergy allows you to share your mouse and keyboard between multiple computers
1:08 at once check it out now at the link in the video description
1:12 now both of Intel's current platforms are
1:16 notorious for running pretty uh
1:20 hot with many enthusiasts pointing to
1:24 Intel's use of a paste rather than solder based thermal
1:29 interface material between the heat producing dye and the protective heat
1:34 spreader over top of it so
1:38 let's take a look at our tools
1:41 this guy right here is
1:44 oh man it's gonna be such comment fodder okay
1:48 so this is the derbauer d-lid mate 2. the tool
1:52 itself actually pretty straightforward it's two
1:56 metal pieces here and a hex wrench
1:59 so the CPU sits in the grooves here with the arrow
2:03 pointing to wait a minute Anthony did you delid this already
2:09 yes the ihs isn't on right
2:14 it's uh it's 90 degrees off okay
2:18 well you know what that's okay because this is a good opportunity
2:22 to show you guys how it works so i'm going to de-lit it again so we can put
2:27 it back on properly pretty much you slide this second piece
2:31 in here you tighten up this screw as much as you
2:34 can by hand you throw in the hex wrench and
2:38 bippity boppity boop
2:42 that's all there is to it the hex crew pulls against the ihs with mechanical
2:47 force causing its silicone seal to break
2:50 and you have got yourself a d-lidded CPU
2:56 then we just need to scrape off the silicone
2:59 clean that baby up and oh look how shiny
3:02 it is okay now you could technically run a CPU like
3:08 this with the cooler straight on the die but with modern Intel processors it's
3:13 impractical for a couple of reasons not the least of which is that in order to
3:17 get good contact between your cooler and the CPU you have to remove the retention
3:21 mechanism meaning there's no easy way to keep the CPU in the socket etc etc etc
3:26 so what most people are doing is they're
3:30 taking their d-lidded processor they're using a higher quality thermal compound
3:34 so we'll be using thermal grizzly also provided by derbauer and they're pretty
3:38 much gluing that sucker back together so we're just going to take
3:42 some pretty generic silicone junk here that
3:46 we pulled out of a tube in our caulking gun we put it in a
3:51 syringe and we're just gonna kind of yeah i'm not doing a very nice job of
3:55 this but whatever you guys get the point okay so that's on there
3:59 we take just a little bit of thermal compound
4:05 then we take our CPU we put it back in the delidding tool aligning the triangle
4:11 with the triangle not triangle with the dot and
4:17 we take our ihs and we put that on aligning the dot with
4:22 the dot bippity boppity
4:28 all right then to make sure that our ihs is aligned correctly we jam this baby in
4:34 here and you take the included
4:37 little turny screwy grippy doodad here
4:41 you tighten this baby down right on the center
4:47 there we go and then leave it for about half an hour
4:50 to harden back on anyway though d-litting the 7700k that's been done to
4:56 death that's the boring one good thing Anthony
5:00 already has the performance numbers that demonstrate that as long as you're
5:04 willing to give up your warranty this
5:08 safer way of de-litting is a fantastic
5:11 way to significantly drop your CPU temperatures which is obviously
5:15 a good thing wait
5:18 how did he get performance numbers on this if the ihs was on the wrong way
5:23 you know what forget it i don't even want to know because the main event
5:27 today is the prototype
5:31 der bauer d-lidding tool for x-299
5:35 this one works a little differently
5:38 using the force from this lever right
5:42 here to push the ihs but the whole thing
5:45 is still powered by a hex screw with one
5:48 of these included allen wrenches so we're going to be delitting the core
5:53 i9 7900x
5:56 because we like to live dangerously get
5:59 on in here dennis come on get a look at this man
6:03 so we put the CPU in
6:06 aligning the triangle right there with the triangle right there so that's all
6:10 pretty straightforward so far it sits in there nice and snug
6:14 all right then in theory and i haven't read the
6:18 instructions we just do this look at this thing look
6:22 at how like over the thing is so german you'll turn this thing and then it
6:27 pushes this thing which in turn pushes this thing like
6:32 so over engineered i love everything about it
6:35 okay it's getting tight now
6:41 i'm getting tense oh it's getting really tight now
6:48 okay oh man that's a lot of pressure
6:52 this is legitimately getting really hard to push oh
6:55 okay this is this is tense oh my goodness
7:00 i think it's off okay i think it's off
7:04 okay thousand dollar processor kids
7:09 ladies and gentlemen thousand dollar
7:14 chip oh oh wow
7:18 oh there it goes holy crap
7:24 look at the way that thing is assembled it's got silicone sealant up the butt
7:32 okay oh baby
7:36 hopefully this thing still works oh i need my alcohol
7:42 this kind so
7:45 same basic procedure let's clean her up
7:48 he's shiny baby shiny
7:52 now apply our silicone again
7:55 apply our thermal grizzly again this time using the handy dandy applicator
8:00 end
8:03 um i'm trying to oh oh lordy oh lordy oh this is bad
8:09 oh that's way too much thermal compound is awful it is awful okay
8:16 that's it i'm never going to be a professional thermal compound applier
8:21 oh really this time get this it's dot to triangle
8:29 so we go ahead and put that baby on there we do not have an alignment tool
8:33 this time so we're just gonna have to yolo it
8:37 then we throw the whole thing back in the
8:40 deleting tool and we clamp her down
8:44 that's right giving her the clamps baby it should be fine
8:48 everything's fine moment of truth time my friends
8:52 let's get this installed in the socket here
8:55 so again triangle the triangle hopefully that orientation works just fine for us
8:59 here cooler time here we'll just be using ic
9:03 diamond let's throw this baby on here
9:07 where my thumb screws be at beaches
9:10 is it going to post or what
9:13 it just posted it did oh yeah
9:17 okay so the CPU still works that's good so
9:22 now all we got to do is throw our overclock profile on
9:26 and then we can do some temp results for you guys
9:31 uh what just happened well that's not good
9:35 this is better than it was really yeah it was 105.
9:42 oh no um okay
9:46 i mean it's hitting that again but not immediately like it did before okay so
9:49 we just need to wait 10 minutes for our final result here
9:53 so here we are and we can actually kind of wrap things up here our core i7
9:56 managed a 17 degree delta at 4.8
10:00 gigahertz allowing it to run at that speed for half an hour for a stress test
10:04 with no throttling whatsoever cool as for our core i9 well
10:08 it looks like our overclock wasn't 100 stable our system actually crashed but
10:12 the good news is that while we were still running at super high temperatures
10:18 come on in here we actually thermal throttled
10:22 less than we did for our first run-through
10:26 before d-lidding okay so it's actually a few days later
10:31 and what we saw with our overclocked result turned out to surprisingly be a
10:38 result of the better cooling performance
10:41 even though the temperatures weren't that different so if we look at the
10:46 graphs our Intel tim overclock test was
10:50 tripping thermal protection despite a very modest voltage bump of only 10
10:55 millivolts so you can actually see it as it drops in the CPU load that's reported
11:00 in task manager and also in the reported temps
11:04 with thermal grizzly conduct-a-knot it actually stabilized and then that was
11:10 what revealed that our overclocked frequency wasn't stable
11:15 so since we can't put a number on that type of improvement what we'll do is
11:19 revert to comparing our stock cooling performance
11:23 and wouldn't you know it we actually got 20 degrees lower on the maximum reported
11:29 temperatures after delitting 20 degrees
11:33 so it's crystal clear then that Intel stock tim is basically toothpaste by
11:37 comparison but should you void the warranty on your
11:40 brand new thousand dollar CPU well given that this tool isn't even out yet to say
11:45 nothing of the mess of the silicone adhesive
11:49 that's a solid no i think for most people but
11:53 if you're looking to squeeze every last bit of performance out of your new
11:57 workstation and you don't mind the risks involved
12:00 well there are definitely gains to be
12:03 had big thanks to synergy for sponsoring
12:07 today's video synergy is the software download that solves a hardware problem
12:13 having two keyboards and two mice or heaven forbid three keyboards and three
12:17 mice for all the different computers that you're running at your battle
12:21 station you'll never have to confuse which one goes with which and it is
12:26 perfect for developers or gamers who
12:29 also like to use a mac for productivity because it is cross-platform Windows mac
12:35 and Linux you just share your keyboard
12:38 and mouse across multiple computers just moving the mouse between the screens
12:43 seamlessly it even has features like dragging and dropping files between the
12:47 computers the ability to set up hotkeys and more so use our link in the video
