0:24 wow guys really that's what we're using it for
0:29 just like you'll be using Corsair's new hs50 if you need a wired three and a

0:55 for over a year now alex has been trying to figure out how to make a laser cutter
0:59 that's both powerful and cheap
1:03 and that's where the good people at smart diy come in they had the smart
1:08 idea to make a diy laser cutter kit
1:12 giving you the capabilities of a prefab at a lower price by having you assemble
1:17 it yourself so it's like ikea i guess
1:21 and that's what we'll be doing today but first
1:24 why do we want a laser cutter and what exactly is a laser cutter okay no i'm
1:29 not gonna wear them the main things that people use them for
1:33 are to accurately cut plastic or wood in
1:37 two dimensions or to engrave basically
1:40 any material and while we already have a 3d printer
1:44 that can fabricate plastic parts in three dimensions
1:48 because these parts get printed in layers they can only be their strongest
1:53 in one direction at this time
1:56 easily pulling apart in the other further contributing to their weakness
2:01 is the time and cost associated with printing solid objects using fused
2:07 deposition modeling so it's much cheaper and faster to make hollow stuff
2:12 with a laser cutter though you can cut pieces of acrylic without giving up any
2:17 of the strength of the original material this means you can build load-bearing
2:21 things like drone components or computer cases using them
2:26 so enough foreplay then let's meet the smart diy fabool c02 a 40 watt laser
2:32 cutter kit hailing from japan we were initially worried this video
2:37 wouldn't be that interesting then we opened up the packaging and holy
2:41 frank look at that laser oh and also computer water cooling parts
2:46 damn okay this should be fun the frame
2:50 is made of aluminum extrusion that gets held in place using right angle brackets
2:55 the instructions aren't perfect and you do have to pay really close attention to
2:59 the text and pictures but if you follow them very carefully there's no reason to
3:03 screw anything up now it's time for power there's actually one power supply
3:08 already in here so that gives us one ac
3:12 to dc power supply for the electronics then a switching power supply for the
3:16 laser the next piece is the rail with the stepper motors once the tension is
3:21 adjusted these tracks should allow our cutter to robot its way around the bed
3:27 and then these big cable holder tank track chummies that i'm sure have a real
3:32 name will keep it from snapping its wires cables go in the motor side then
3:37 out on the bottom and over to the controller
3:40 this can communicate to the outside once we have the i o panel attached which has
3:44 usb ac power and also this weird fitting
3:48 thing that i'm not totally sure what it does yet
3:51 now it's time for water cooling the initial plan was to RGB it up and use
3:56 our own lit af fans but unfortunately the fan controller uses proprietary
4:01 wiring and we would need to do a fair bit of careful soldering to get power to
4:06 our RGB controller so we decided to leave it stock although
4:10 a hardline tubing upgrade is definitely still on the table down the line
4:15 when it came time to mount the laser we realized that we didn't have a large
4:19 enough allen key for these bolts so thank goodness for vice grips
4:25 then we carefully put the laser on making sure not to tighten it down too
4:29 hard or we could risk breaking it with the laser in wiring it up was pretty
4:34 much a matter of following the diagram until everything but the pump is
4:37 connected we'll plug that in once the reservoir is filled the only part of
4:42 this build that didn't feel all that premium was the dampers for the top
4:45 cover these long bolts are kind of jank
4:49 but they do the trick and then with the acrylic installed on top it looks pretty
4:54 good anyway okay but hold on a minute here if the
4:58 laser is locked in place in the back
5:01 how does it cut things ah
5:04 well it actually gets bounced around to the desired location using front surface
5:10 mirrors the first one goes back here on this
5:13 piece of aluminum extrusion and then this is where this project
5:19 started taking a bit longer than expected it would appear that a big part of the
5:24 reason that laser cutters cost so much
5:28 is because of how freaking long it takes to get them properly calibrated
5:33 so the process is basically like this after putting on the protective not to
5:38 mention very cool glasses that you need
5:41 whenever the laser back is open you take the mirror and put a piece of masking
5:46 tape over it then briefly radiate the laser which creates a burn mark on the
5:51 tape to show where it's hitting you adjust until it hits in the center
5:55 and then you're good to go no actually it's not quite that simple
6:00 either since the laser beam needs to hit the center of all of the mirrors in all of
6:06 their possible locations around the work area
6:10 it actually was about a day of fine tuning before it was finally ready to go
6:16 the last steps then were filling the loop putting on the final panels
6:21 installing the software the process for which is conveniently entirely in
6:25 japanese and booting it up
6:29 and it works and it's in english actually
6:32 so for our first test we'll engrave a dead meme on a dead pc side panel with
6:39 okay so some small issues at first but we'll
6:44 just turn vsync on here and uh hey the second half of the etching went
6:48 without a hitch so guys as of filming this right now we
6:53 just got this bad boy running and we definitely want to do a follow-up video

7:56 happening by blocking all outbound and inbound traffic so nothing leaks out
8:00 before you connect and if your connection goes down for some reason
8:04 vigilant bear will kick back in and stop until the connection comes back so for a
