0:00 it is finally the conclusion of personal rig update 2015 yes I know it is 2016
0:06 now that's not the point the point is that it started in 2015 today is all
0:11 about the final deployment in the cabinet in the closet
0:17 so let's make it
0:26 happen a Pacers as720 is a dual
0:30 interface USB 3.1 type c equipped SSD
0:33 with read speeds of up to 540 mbes per second check out the link in the video
0:37 description to learn more yeah let's just like tip
0:41 it okay well I didn't really do anything
0:45 uh now I got to load up all the other junk into the back of the truck here so
0:50 this is actually our first look at my wife's machine so it also had the front
0:55 bezel of the same case uh airbrushed by
0:58 our neighbor here neighbor Steve let's get this baby loaded up too
1:03 okay looking
1:07 good oh no need an optical drive oo light
1:13 scribe okay so here's the situation there's actually a lot to do first I've
1:17 got to get this ruthless bastard up the stairs I have straight up no idea how
1:22 that's happening these PCS this UPS
1:26 these rails these monitors all need to go up the stairs as as well this Nas
1:31 needs the correct Hardware put inside it and finally all of the gear that we are
1:38 no longer using in here needs to
1:42 GTFO so let's get down to it shall we
1:45 okay well this thing weighs a metric shed load but there are some ways that I
1:50 can significantly reduce its weight then by removing as many of the outer panels
1:56 and inner components as I can before I try and take it up the stairs
2:00 can you move thank
2:06 you I need more leverage more more okay
2:11 more traction more something I need more something this is what I hate about
2:16 camera people they never lend a hand they just sit there and
2:23 watch I think what I need right now is some Nikki V's lifting tips
2:30 all right Nikki V here back with another moving tip okay so we got this big ass
2:33 thing here what we want to do is lift with our back twist jerk in a you know
2:37 jerking motion he knows the most ergonomic way to do
2:42 this okay go to sleep he's supposed to
2:46 be napping I'm actually going to have to go into his room in order to tilt this
2:51 up
3:03 okay sorry honey go back to
3:07 bed
3:13 okay oh wow that's a really tight fit
3:21 um okay it looks like this is going to
3:26 fit that's good man this stuff is heavy
3:30 okay so this and the other one in the room in there already are the clay power
3:35 uh th000 volt damp UPS's that I'm going
3:39 to be using for the two systems in there my system gets its own cuz it's a little
3:43 bit more powerful and then my wife's is going to share her ups with the uh the
3:48 server
3:51 slnas life personal rig oh wow this
3:55 one's a lot
3:58 heavier okay Pro tip uh don't don't carry rack mount
4:05 cases by the mounting Rail and Acer said
4:09 let there be monitor upgrades and there
4:12 were and it was good and finally of
4:16 course none of this is staying
4:19 here it's all going to be rack mounted so here are my rails so I've been
4:25 meaning to pull out some of the consumer grade gear that I've had in this server
4:29 for for quite some time this WS board is a great board doesn't support ECC memory
4:35 this raid card Great Raid card doesn't
4:38 properly support monitoring the discs and then I've replaced all that stuff
4:42 with a more suitable configuration so while I don't have the Ballin six or8
4:46 terab hard drives that I do with the office I do have 1 tby WD blacks and I
4:51 am using an Enterprise grade SSD cash in raid one to allow me to get the best
4:56 possible performance out of the yes the
5:00 you thought they were retired but they're not ulx 10 GB network card so
5:05 I'm actually going to be using those combined with the onboard Nyx in order
5:10 to enable not 10 gbit but at least faster than 1 gbit transfers between all
5:14 the rack mounted computers just using um single cables from them to each other
5:19 and actually not having them go through the router or the switch at all I
5:23 changed up the motherboard to uh one that has Remote Management so I've added
5:27 a little ikvm module right there I've changed out to ECC memory not really
5:32 necessary with unraid but I want the utmost instability I'm going to be
5:36 running VMS on here so that I can have stuff like my air video server running
5:40 on Windows um and then I can have stuff like crash plan running in a Docker
5:44 container there's a lot of functionality here I may do a follow-up video on just
5:48 this machine and then I'm running a xon processor so that I can take advantage
5:51 of that ECC RAM and then it uses a very similar case to Clover server actually
5:56 it's just the 12 Bay versus the 8 bay one because at home I don't have those
6:01 same high-capacity drives so if I want any storage at all I need to have uh a
6:06 few more expansion Baye there okay so
6:10 now I got to clear out this corner and I really hope you guys either don't look
6:15 too closely at or don't judge me for my
6:18 power setup in here I am going to be working on something a little bit better
6:21 than a power bar run through the wall in
6:25 the future okay so most of the network
6:28 cables running into the next room over there actually need to go away because
6:35 all of the networking is pretty much going to stay in here
6:39 now yep that's my that's my wall
6:43 hole oh no I pulled out the nails this
6:46 is the world's most ghetto wall
6:51 mount so step one is going to be our ups
6:54 battery backups we're going to put these on the bottom because they're really
6:57 heavy they're a pain in the butt to uh
7:01 to move you don't want your thing ending up being all topheavy and the other main
7:05 reason is that I don't have shelves for them so I need to sit them on the bottom
7:11 of the unit so that the entire weight isn't being borne
7:17 by these puppies there we go okay one down second
7:23 GS here we go so now all that's left to do is plug
7:28 those into the wall and then all my other devices can plug into those for
7:34 power so I don't actually have to get back here anymore okay so for those of
7:38 you who haven't played around with rack mount stuff before basically you take
7:43 this inner slide you pop the little
7:46 latch here all this without slicing your fingers
7:51 open and then these rails mount to the
7:54 side of your case with the screws that are included with the rails then
8:00 you take the other sides of the rails and you mount these inside your cabinet
8:05 hopefully in the right position which is not always easy wow this is a really
8:10 shallow cabinet I didn't realize these weren't the same depth as the ones at
8:15 the office that's okay that is a very minor curve
8:21 ball no I'm one spot
8:24 high of course I am yeah it needs to go
8:27 down just a touch so weird wanted to
8:31 work up a sweat today I was thinking could go to the gym today or I could uh
8:36 Mount some server crap can this just stay in
8:40 place
8:45 please tight fit is fine as long as it's
8:49 a fit that's weird what are we hitting
8:52 maybe if we just give it the old ah there we go three units rack mounted
8:59 easy okay it's okay it gets easier these rails are so much frakin
9:06 better they lock on like that No
9:10 Nonsense just Boop let's do this one now
9:14 now these ones are a little bit more
9:17 finicky to align here I can live with
9:21 that for the benefits that they
9:25 give there we go look at that man I love
9:28 these reils it comes free of the entire thing so you can just go boop I'm
9:33 working on the wife PC slide that baby
9:36 back in there and there it
9:42 is okay last
9:47 one man I like those rails
9:50 better okay oh I put them in
9:55 backwards fortunately these are really fast to turn around
10:02 it's in so let's get it all wired up
10:05 then I'm probably going to get ear mounts for the ubiquity router as well
10:10 as the net gear switch at some point I am going to give myself another power
10:16 bar as well up here I have a more
10:20 elegant solution at the office but this actually isn't too bad I'm just going to
10:24 hook those up on top
10:28 here UPS's are on let's get networking
10:31 hooked up okay this is going well now Ethernet
10:37 for waifu PC I mean okay overall not
10:41 perfect Cable Management still needs some work yeah this is as good as it's
10:44 going to be for now okay so with everything hooked up it
10:48 is finally time for The Secret Sauce the Magic Bullet if you will and those of
10:53 you who have been following from the beginning will already know this but I've had a lot of people asking me who
10:58 have tuned into personal rig update 2015 later how are you planning to get all of
11:03 your IO into the next room one Optical
11:07 Thunderbolt cable per system from Corning that's why I added those assus
11:13 Thunderbolt cards to the systems so all
11:16 I've got to do is run these puppies through the wall and in theory we're
11:21 pretty much Off to the
11:25 Races how much is left okay
11:31 okay now obviously a single Thunderbolt cable no matter how magical is going to
11:36 need something on the other end to make it work so that is where these come in
11:41 these are Thunderbolt hubs from Elgato uh they've got three USB 3 ports they've
11:46 got mic and headphone Jacks they've got Thunderbolt pass through if you want to
11:49 daisy chain more stuff and if you want
11:53 it they've got an HDMI out as well as Ethernet if we're going to use
11:57 Thunderbolt to DisplayPort to go straight to our Monitor and that is all
12:03 the I/O for the computer again Cable Management not done but it is somewhat
12:07 Moment of Truth time oh I hope this
12:11 works here it is
12:15 theoretically perfect Silence with no performance
12:23 compromise whoa it worked right away what were the fraking odds of that
12:29 nothing ever works on the first try for me all we've got to do in theory is get
12:34 some Thunderbolt drivers installed on the system which I have to do from over
12:38 here a yes always connect Elgato
12:42 Thunderbolt dock
12:46 okay hey look at that keyboard's working
12:50 it worked once now we just have to do it
12:54 again all that's left is to run one more
12:57 Thunderbolt cable and we are pretty much
13:01 Off to the Races ah someone was asking from my
13:06 tweet the other night uh what desk this was and the answer is it is a desk saw
13:11 in half full of
13:16 cardboard for years for years I have
13:21 pursued silent
13:24 Computing and in the end Thunderbolt was
13:27 the answer no amount of water cooling ever made it quite good enough and
13:33 people asked me gee lonus why would you
13:36 care about having a window on a rack out case that's why
13:40 suckers that's why because that looks flipping awesome so this one's actually
13:45 relatively tested I have at least tried
13:48 the ASUS Thunderbolt card on this one okay let's just give her the old reboot
13:54 and see what happens maybe something was just jostled
13:58 loose and shipping and I can just oh hello okay let's find out what post code
14:03 A2 means CPU fan error oh that's not a
14:07 big deal I have a CPU fan it's water cool in
14:12 theory we should be fine this time let's go up
14:19 there you got to cut out all this stuff so that you just show the part where I'm
14:22 like and it goes
14:26 okay wait a minute ow oh power bar is a
14:31 little finicky oh for crying out loud well
14:36 there we go just like that my friends hey look at that g-sync showed up
14:41 working right away g-sync display connected so it looks like the display
14:45 port connection doesn't care at all that
14:48 it's running through what is this like a 30t optical Thunderbolt cable freaking
14:54 awesome so there you have it All That
14:58 Remains to be done done
15:04 now and all the noise stays in
