0:00 okay here let's just test out your internet browser and oh oh my eyes it
0:06 burns oh the toolbars this is probably a
0:10 pretty familiar experience if you have ever worked in a computer repair shop or
0:14 helped a less tech-savvy member of your family fix an issue with their computer
0:18 browser toolbars pre-installed programs Auto starting apps and tools that change
0:23 your default search engine no I don't want to use ask gum.com are referred to
0:28 as crapware and blow Weare many people use these terms interchangeably but I
0:33 think there's actually a pretty important distinction between them
0:36 crapware is used to describe software that has no sensible use like those
0:41 awful toolbars that take up half the browser with sponsored links to sites
0:44 you would never want to visit and leave you with no space to actually view the
0:48 web content that you came to see whereas bloatware is software that can be
0:52 legitimately useful but that was installed without your approval usually
0:57 by the manufacturer of your computer and that you probably wouldn't have
1:00 installed if given the choice so how do you get bloatware and crapware well as
1:05 mentioned before a lot of bloatware comes pre-installed on your PC and
1:09 actually the same goes even for mobile devices the Samsung Galaxy S4 was
1:14 particularly notorious for shipping with excessive bloatware with about 7 gigs of
1:19 the capacity of the 16 gig model taken up by pre-installed apps and software
1:23 that you couldn't remove without a pretty solid understanding of how
1:26 Android Works yikes not all blare is
1:30 pre-installed on Hardware though sometimes you'll find it hidden in the
1:33 recommended or Express installation options for free software
1:37 subscription-based antivirus Solutions are notorious for this hiding in
1:41 countless installers just waiting to eat up your CPU and RAM resources and in
1:46 this regard crapware is no different if I had a penny for every time I had to
1:50 uncheck install ask toolbar when trying
1:53 to install a new program on my PC I would already have my kids college
1:57 education paid for now in a world where
2:00 PC manufacturers often spend countless hours and funds designing and developing
2:05 their latest and greatest new laptop or whatever why on Earth would they include
2:09 pre-loaded programs that seem to do nothing but slow your PC down sometimes
2:14 the answer is pretty innocent and it's just a matter of they wanted to put on
2:18 this like feature that it turns out people didn't really care about that
2:21 much it wasn't very well-coded and it used up resources you just pull it off
2:24 other times the answer's a little more Sinister cash cheddar green backs Yen
2:31 Dong Dong anyway um back on topic
2:35 companies like oh let's just use Norton as an example will pay PC manufacturers
2:40 to preload their software onto their computers because once it's there many
2:45 people don't know how to get rid of it or even know that they should want to
2:49 well hold on lonus the apps pre-installed on my PC were free I mean
2:54 how is there a benefit to anyone to have it installed there here's how let's take
2:58 hypothetical dude Jeff who brings his new pc home and it's pleased to discover
3:03 it is protected by Norton Antivirus an
3:06 antivirus program that was included with his purchase how nice only a year from
3:11 now that software is going to be all like yo Jeff man I'm expired man your PC
3:15 is like unprotected unless you purchase another year of the service act now
3:20 before the hacker worm Trojan monster virus steals all your personal
3:25 information man because Norton was
3:28 pre-installed on that PC Jeff never realized that he could shop around and
3:32 find free Alternatives that work just as well or better so now they get to rake
3:37 in $54.99 a year for the lifetime of that computer pretty smart well okay
3:42 lonus now that I know about bloatware and crapware how do I get rid of it and
3:46 what can I do to make sure I don't get any more lucky for us life hacker has
