0:00 so people have always been fascinated by death who shot Tupac what really
0:05 happened to Amelia earheart is Elvis still alive somewhere in Mississippi but
0:10 in the tech World it seems to be whether the desktop PC is dead as a platform
0:17 that we can't seem to stop talking about with Myriad digital column inches
0:23 dedicated to the topic you see about 15
0:27 years ago it seemed like the desktop computer was an absolute necessity for
0:32 most technological interaction that didn't involve living room experiences
0:36 like console gaming or watching television viewing simple websites was
0:42 with few exceptions something you did sitting at a desk even laptops of the
0:47 era were clunky underpowered and far
0:50 more common in business settings than they were at home of course these days
0:56 thanks to fast processors that are much less power hungry smaller portable
1:01 devices have been able to step in and fill roles that were once almost
1:06 exclusively the domain of desktops and because so much of our Computing these
1:11 days is aided by Cloud processing and
1:15 cloud storage having a desktop PC to
1:18 install applications and store your stuff has become less and less important
1:24 I mean think about how Wikipedia has become the goto font of knowledge in
1:29 instead of Encarta on compact disc or
1:33 how Facebook probably stores far more of your precious photos than your hard
1:38 drive does so because a decent
1:41 smartphone tablet or a laptop can bring
1:45 up web pages and social media just as
1:48 capably as a desktop and because a
1:51 staggering number of people only use their computers as Internet machines
1:56 anyway people started to trade in their bulky desk top PCS a few years back and
2:02 desktop sales have been declining ever
2:05 since in fact after desktops hit their
2:09 peak in worldwide shipments in 2010 about
2:12 157 million units that number dropped
2:17 precipitously to only 2third of that by
2:20 the end of last year so given this deine
2:25 is there really reason to believe that we're going to be computing exclus
2:29 exclusively on portable devices in the
2:33 near future to answer let's take a
2:36 deeper look at those numbers although
2:40 the figures might sound a little alarming if you're a PC Enthusiast
2:45 concerned about how much longer your hobby will be around it's important to
2:49 know that much of the slump in sales has been at the lower end of the market your
2:55 relatively cheap machines from companies like Dell and Gateway that
2:59 non-enthusiasts were mostly using for basic tasks and given that modern
3:05 laptops and smartphones do these things quite well the lackluster sales of
3:10 Cheaper off-the-shelf PCS makes sense
3:14 businesses have been migrating to laptops as well in addition to keeping
3:19 their PCS around for longer before
3:23 replacing them due to a lack of gamechanging new features that would
3:28 justify a more rapid upgrade cycle I
3:31 mean do you really think the average receptionist would be able to tell much
3:35 of a difference between a Sandy Bridge CPU from 2011 and a current gen kbl Lake
3:42 processor does his or her calendar benefit from USB
3:47 3.1 so where does that leave Enthusiast Computing and PC gaming well if this is
3:53 your thing you'll be pleased to know that the market for gaming desktops and
3:58 components is still quite strong and is
4:01 expected to continue to grow into the future in fact the total gaming Hardware
4:07 Market hit the $60 billion Mark in 2016
4:12 and is expected to grow by 6% annually
4:15 through 2019 not bad considering how
4:19 poorly the low-end is doing but why is
4:22 gaming Hardware so different well a big
4:25 part of it is that unlike the general consumer Market people who are are
4:29 serious about PC gaming often won't settle for good enough considering how
4:35 quickly demanding new games are released according to Intel PC Gamers upgrade
4:41 about every other year which is significantly more often than the
4:45 general public and the rise of digital distribution platforms such as Steam and
4:50 the plethora of custom options like
4:53 multim monitor the ability to use almost any controller you want and enough RGB
4:58 to choke a horse not to mention the immersion of VR has helped to make the
5:03 gaming PC scene a compelling one and
5:07 although game downloads and VR headsets are also available on Console systems
5:12 like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One they
5:15 still can't come close to the levels of performance that are available on the PC
5:22 so what's our conclusion then while the general feeling around the desktop PC
5:27 market is Doom and Gloom it seems the real story is that the PC is simply
5:32 becoming more of a product for gamers um
5:36 high-end professionals and enthusiasts who are less price sensitive than
5:42 normies and I know that those folks
