1:02 local networking setup that boasted speeds three to four times higher than

1:15 a lower price using secondhand
1:18 Enterprise networking gear called
1:21 infiniband so I sprung into action
1:25 drafting an email to Jake that went something like hey this looks really
1:30 cool but I'm super busy can you figure out what the junk is going on with this
1:35 and he was like okay this looks pretty
1:38 simple I order the cards in the post and a qsfp copper direct attached cable plug
1:44 them in and it's Off to the Races right wrong the quad data rate or QDR 40 gbit
1:51 infiniband cards we got off eBay were made by Q Logic a company that was
1:57 acquired by Intel who doesn't provide
2:00 Windows drivers and while showing these
2:03 speeds on Linux would have been really cool the majority of our audience runs
2:08 Windows so round two fight we began with high
2:14 hopes for the MH rh2 A-
2:18 xsr even though we couldn't find it on melanox website only to have them dashed
2:24 by an inaccurate product listing the
2:27 second one we bought is a d double data
2:30 rate card and I've been informed that 20
2:35 gbit transfer speeds are so last week l
2:40 i not to be dissuaded from spending my money by the first two unsuccessful
2:45 attempts Jake ordered a third pair of
2:48 infin band adapters melanox mhq 19B
2:52 dxtrs for 25 bucks each and a 5 m or 15t
2:58 qsfp copper direct attach cable for 30
3:01 bucks putting our total cost at
3:05 $80 and still under $150 for a much
3:09 longer link with a 45t cable running you
3:12 about $90 the cards are PCI Express Gen 2 and
3:18 should fit in any reasonably modern computer so install then in Windows
3:24 device manager you should see melanox
3:27 connect X2 IPI B adapter if they don't
3:32 show up then install the wiof archive
3:36 version 4.95 then update it to 5.10 for
3:40 the most stable results theoretically
3:44 this will update your cards to the latest firmware but if it didn't we will
3:48 have a blog post on the LT Forum that outlines the detailed steps for forcing
3:53 this manually as well as some other details about the process check it out
3:57 below with the cards recognized we have functioning infiniband NYX but no subnet
4:03 manager which assigns an ID to the Nyx
4:07 and creates a routing table based off that so effectively then there's no way
4:12 for them to receive or send anything since one of the most likely use cases
4:18 for something like this would be a high-speed SMB or I scuzzy server and a
4:24 preferred client somewhere else on the network we opted to install op SM on the
4:30 test bench representing our file server

4:37 end now we need to assign IP addresses to our infiniband adapters but since
4:43 they can't be used to communicate with the other Ethernet and Wi-Fi devices on
4:49 our Network we want to put them on a separate subnet and keep our normal
4:54 Ethernet plugs plugged into the motherboard so if your home network is1

5:05 192.168.1 something let's say 20 for our
5:09 server and 21 for our game machine

5:15 up on both machines run a quick ping test to make sure they can see each
5:19 other then to ensure that the higher
5:23 speed link is used when transferring data between the two machines adjust
5:28 their priority by changing automatic metric to some number we chose 20 for
5:35 our onboard Ethernet and 10 for our
5:38 infiniband and Bam you should have a 40
5:42 gigabit link though please note it'll show up as 32 gbit due to 810 encoding
5:47 and all that's missing now is some kind of drive that can actually saturate that
5:53 kind of a connection fortunately we
5:56 still have those 16 gig sticks of Dominator Platinum that we were supposed
5:59 to send back to Corsair but then our PR rep left and didn't tell anybody and our
6:04 buds over at soft perfect hooked us up with their RAM dis software 7 GB per
6:10 second anybody unfortunately on consumer
6:14 versions of Windows we didn't see quite the results we were hoping for latencies
6:19 were still super low which makes sense
6:22 since infiniband is an Enterprise technology intended for storage area
6:26 networks but we capped out at about one
6:29 Gigabyte per second for our maximum
6:32 bandwidth file transfer tests similar to
6:36 10 GB Ethernet so what gives well the
6:40 answer is RDMA on Windows server or
6:44 Linux we could expect much better perhaps a followup later let us know in
6:48 the comments if you'd like to see that either way we're pleased as punch with
6:53 the results because compared to 10 GB Ethernet we do lose the interoperability
6:59 with other Ethernet gear but we gain the
7:03 same transfer speeds as long as all we're looking for is point to point and
7:08 a whole lot of money to put back into our
7:11 wallets so this is an interesting one we've got today this is the tma2 modular

7:32 units you can change the ear pads and even the cables although that last one
7:37 is sort of more normal everything else though is like freaking crazy there's

7:50 you want something that's really light and portable and not just that they can
7:55 be taken back apart and recombined with
7:59 add-on parts that you can get down the road if for whatever reason you want to
