0:00 I gotta be honest guys I don't really
0:05 know what to say here it's like I don't even know which way is
0:08 up anymore I mean I looked in the right direction but I think you get what I
0:12 mean okay so Marseille claims that it's
0:16 special em cables can improve image
0:21 quality for both games and video content
0:26 but surely it's snake oil I mean the
0:30 claims on the box couldn't possibly be true
0:33 could they well we've done literally
0:38 hours of video capture so you can see
0:42 for yourself
0:51 Corsairs Boyd pro gaming headsets feature microfiber mesh fabric and
0:56 memory foam ear cups as well as custom tuned 50 millimeter neodymium drivers
1:00 check them out at the link below from the get go the m cable stands out as a
1:06 little different from the other HDMI x'
1:09 on one end and HDMI connector labeled
1:13 source okay I'm with you so far
1:16 then on the other end an HDMI connector
1:20 and a USB connector well what it turns
1:25 out is that this is to power the digital
1:29 signal processor that marseilles claims to have designed from the ground up for
1:34 video processing and then built into the
1:37 cable I mean to say that my BS detector
1:40 got true good would be a gross understatement we all I mean literally
1:46 everyone in the office thought that this thing would be great fodder for our
1:51 useless tech over a hundred series I mean look at the obviously faked results
1:57 in the marketing materials I mean if if if those are real you are getting some
2:02 magic grade upscaling on the cinema one and for the gaming Edition you're
2:08 getting anti aliasing without any performance loss spoiler alert it is not
2:14 as good as the Box might indicate but don't turn that dial folks this one gets
2:20 real interesting before we get to testing though a set-up guide and cables
2:25 upscaling only works if the output matches the content resolution so for a
2:31 480p game or movie you have to actually
2:35 set your TV or monitor to that
2:38 resolution rather than just stretching it to your native one in software second
2:44 the m cable cinemas 1080p to 4k
2:47 upscaling relies on detecting a 1080p 24
2:51 FPS signal this is their film mode recognition feature starting with the
2:56 gaming Edition hmm at native resolution
3:00 they're processing isn't doing the Windows desktop any
3:04 favors that's a drawback now let's fire
3:08 up some games what the frak this is rise of the Tomb Raider at 720p
3:16 you're seeing this right it looks like
3:19 anti-aliasing is on well okay let's just
3:23 grab a regular HDMI cable and whit's seriously and this is not isolated to
3:30 Tomb Raider we're looking at significantly smoother diagonal lines
3:34 across the board and look at these cables at the beginning of the Deus Ex
3:39 mankind divided benchmark at 1080p the
3:43 improvement is noticeable as well if a little smaller so it looks like it's not
3:49 just upscaling but actually providing AAA and pretty decent anti-aliasing at
3:56 that I mean compared to running 8x msaa
4:00 on your video card in Deus Ex we're not quite there but we're doing way better
4:05 than FX AAA and stacking 8x NSAA with
4:10 the end cable gives us even better results as for running two M cables in
4:16 series though most people probably wouldn't like the over sharp effect but
4:22 csgo players take note of these shimmering model outlines let's go back
4:27 to one cable then but let's throw some older games like quake 2 or unreal at it
4:34 whoa at 480p the difference is night and
4:39 day it basically looks like 720p and at
4:43 720p it's not as dramatic but the improvement is there so at this point we
4:50 were thinking well ok the lower the resolution the better then right well
4:57 while an M cable would go great with a
5:00 Playstation 3 or a Playstation 2 even on
5:03 an HDMI converter unfortunately you can
5:06 only go back so far Super Mario World really didn't look its best with the M
5:11 cables current scaling algorithm anyway and we think one with a scan
5:15 line generator or pixel art scaling like hqx ----builtin would make it much more
5:21 ideal for retro gaming assuming that
5:24 Marcy's claims with respect to input leg hold true and actually more good news if
5:32 there's any leg our 240 FPS camera can't
5:36 detect it so that's another win for M cables marketing so other than the still
5:42 clearly faked screenshot comparisons on the Box the gaming Edition somehow
5:48 passes the snake-oil test but what about
5:52 the cinema version at 480p upscaled to
5:55 1080p anime really sees a major bump in
6:00 visual fidelity although color banding can get
6:03 exacerbated somewhat pay particular attention to the lines of inori's face
6:08 and the cracks in the ground Big Buck
6:11 Bunny sees significant smoothing of its blockiness especially around the edges
6:15 of objects which is what we'd expect from this filter by now and as for a
6:20 480p YouTube rip from Brandon's red weapon review take one look at the
6:26 difference in this scene with max in the forest and tell me that that doesn't
6:31 look significantly better when shown
6:35 these results the Universal response at
6:38 the office was and I quote what the [ __ ]
6:42 that's 480p are you sure you didn't mix
6:46 it up yeah we're sure as for 720p
6:50 sharpened edges still give the edge haha
6:54 to the M cable in anime while Big Buck Bunny sees details that were fuzzy in
6:59 480p subscale that now looked relatively sharp and meanwhile our red capture
7:04 still looks pretty good at 720p on its own but depth and sharpness of smaller
7:11 details both get a big boost check out the reflection on Max's eyes
7:15 and her hair in this shot at 1080p on
7:20 like the gaming edition the sharpening effect just isn't as necessary or
7:24 pronounced but what it does do is remove
7:27 blocking artifacts and improve the dynamic range of compressed content
7:31 since 1080p content typically has fewer
7:35 artifacts on YouTube than lower resolutions we're seeing a more
7:39 pronounced effect which is great news for internet streaming when upscaling to
7:44 4k our 1080 footage looks noticeably
7:47 sharper compared to a normal HDMI cables 1080p output and here we can see clearer
7:52 improvements on small details like Max's hair though compared to true 4k output
7:58 there is visible fringing on the edge of her face so it's not as good as clean 4k
8:03 but definitely better than 1080p now a
8:07 prime helpfully pointed out that these are all things that he could do with
8:12 Premiere and Photoshop but until he can
8:16 do it 224 to 60 scenes per second
8:19 without a noticeable delay I'll continue being impressed by the EM cable
8:23 leading us to the conclusion then these
8:26 things actually work but would I
8:30 recommend them for a hundred and fifty US dollars with a couple of improvements
8:36 it actually becomes a no-brainer I'd like to see a scaler toggle on the
8:40 gaming edition so that doesn't mess with my text on the desktop and I'd like to
8:45 see flashable firmware with specialty filters for certain applications like
8:49 retro gaming but there are definitely
8:53 folks out there that I'd recommend it for today like anime fans with large low
8:59 resolution collections console gamers as
9:02 long as you don't go to retro and anyone
9:05 who does a lot of web content streaming keeping in mind of course the display
9:10 resolution caveat so I can't believe I'm
9:15 saying this but great job Murr say it doesn't go down like this often but you
9:21 shocked us mass drop is the place to go
