I had some requests after my SSD versus hard drive Tech tips why don't you try a
0:05
faster hard drive so I thought you know what I'll do you one better because it
0:09
was a bit of an unfair comparison that time I had the vertex Le which is ocz's
0:14
fastest SSD and I had it against it's a good hard drive don't get me wrong the
0:18
wd1 TB black is an exceptional hard drive but it is a 7200 RPM drive and is
0:24
therefore a little bit limited so okay here first things first I'm going to
0:28
press the buttons on my two test bed PCS here at the same time get those booting
0:33
up so I have changed to a 10,000 RPM
0:37
drive I'm now using a Western Digital Raptor 160 gig I would have used a
0:42
velociraptor but the reality of it is I just don't have one on hand and then
0:46
I'll go one better instead of testing a super fast SSD against a 10K RPM Drive
0:52
I've gone and found a slower SSD so I
0:56
got a Vertex 60 gig drive to test
1:00
against the Raptor 160 GB so I'm going to get the
1:04
cameraman to have a look oh there msn's up okay so the SSD is now loaded and it
1:11
is absolutely killing the
1:15
Raptor so we might have to wait another moment for the the Raptor to finally
1:20
there we go MSN Messengers
1:23
done so there are a lot more tests that we can run here and I'm going to do sort
1:27
of a quick snapshot of the same kinds of stuff that I did last time around so why
1:31
don't we just launch Left for Dead 2 my favorite PC games see which one takes
1:37
longer already the SSD is way out in the lead okay I'm going to cheat a little
1:42
bit in favor of the hard drive here and I'm going to press escape on both
1:45
computers at the same time okay so you can see that loads just as fast and then
1:50
when it actually starts to load again you can see that the SSD pulls away
1:54
again all right so let's go over over over over to single player and let's
2:00
launch a single player campaign start
2:04
game there we go and we are going to observe once again I'm going to
2:08
hypothesize that the SSD will load the level
2:12
faster let's find out if I'm
2:16
right remember this is a slower SSD than
2:19
we were using last time against a faster hard
2:24
drive there you go we are
2:31
yeah I wasn't counting but we're we're some some seconds ahead of the hard
2:34
drive on this particular test and one of the other things that I I mean
2:38
personally I really like about running an SSD is the fact that whenever you alt
2:42
Tab out of a program even if it's a 3D program there's like a chair in the
2:45
cameraman's way here I'm just going to move that you can actually see I'm
2:50
holding alt pressing tab right now oh wow that actually went really fast for
2:54
the hard drive that's um that's actually pretty unusual but either way with the
2:58
SSD I have observed for myself that
3:02
usually you can minimize and maximize things like games a lot faster that's
3:06
pretty impressive anyway okay so let's see what else we got here actually this
3:10
is a good one okay launching we're going
3:13
to open just a it's an HD video file it's actually one of my video blog
3:16
videos that's um that's not re-encoded so it's quite a large file we're going
3:21
to open it in Windows Media Center see which one opens it
3:24
faster oh yeah playing on the SSD and
3:28
we're still waiting just to play a video file look at that there you go hard
3:32
drive finally does it so alt F no F lock
3:37
okay so we're going to close both of these alt f4 and the SSD closes faster
3:43
even if I press it at exactly the same time so let's see how much how much
3:46
further do I have to go with this because the whole point of this is that
3:50
it was it had nothing to do with which SSD I was testing and which hard drive I
3:55
was testing the point is ssds because of
3:59
their minuscule response times will always outperform a hard drive
4:03
especially in just your random mundane day-to-day tasks they're just faster so
4:09
let's actually okay let's do a couple more things here for you let's launch
4:13
Internet Explorer and we're not waiting for it look how long you wait for
4:17
Internet Explorer to just load a web page okay I mean internet it shouldn't
4:22
even be affected by your PC at this point in time but hard drives are just
4:26
too too slow and it's not about oh well
4:29
I can afford to wait 2 seconds yeah it's 2 seconds but it's 2 seconds every time
4:34
you know show me another upgrade you can do with your computer that will actually
4:37
impact performance by by cutting time that it takes to do things in half every
4:42
time you do them anyway thanks for checking out my video blog and I hope
4:45
that this has uh enlightened all of the naysayers
