0:00 In the competitive hospitality industry,
0:02 it's important for a hotel to have some kind of shtick.
0:06 An onsite casino, a cheap buffet,
0:09 affordable by-the-hour rates.
0:11 You know, it all depends what you're into.
0:13 As for Taiwanese brand 168IN,
0:16 well, they've got normal hotels,
0:19 like the stay in Taipei
0:21 that we were at during Computex this year.
0:23 But then once the show was over,
0:25 they invited us to come see something pretty different
0:28 that they're doing in nearby Taoyuan.
0:31 So behind me is the iHotel, a gaming hotel,
0:36 the first of its kind in Taiwan.
0:39 As for what makes a hotel gaming?
0:43 Well, apparently it's 55 something, 4K something,
0:48 DX racer, presumably chairs, and GTX 1080Ti's?
0:54 What?
0:56 Okay, we're gonna have to go check this out.
0:59 Or check in, as it were.
1:02 Get it?
1:03 It's a hotel joke.
1:13 The check-in process is pretty normal
1:15 other than the king-size helping of RGB.
1:19 So you check in.
1:25 And then you check in.
1:25 They've got their GeForce iCafe certification
1:29 proudly on display.
1:30 They're actually the only hotel in Taiwan
1:32 to meet NVIDIA's standard.
1:33 And then the lobby opens up to, well,
1:37 these guys know their audience.
1:39 The included breakfast is served along that side.
1:42 And then on this side, well,
1:45 some hotels have a rockin' gym,
1:48 but 168IN figured that a big 12-player LAN center
1:54 was a better bet.
1:55 And if their guests really wanted to get their heart rate up,
1:58 they would go and plug into the HTC VIVE VR machine
2:02 that's over there in the hallway.
2:04 So there's nobody here right now.
2:07 But anyone staying here can use these machines
2:10 as much as they want.
2:12 The idea behind this common area
2:14 is that the guests can get to know each other
2:16 by coming out of their rooms to play games together.
2:19 And eSports teams can hold practices
2:22 throughout the day or night.
2:24 It's open 24 hours.
2:25 So the Australian team, Blank eSports,
2:28 was actually here for two months during Overwatch contenders
2:31 and apparently basically never left the lobby.
2:35 And these are the best machines in the building.
2:36 And these are the best machines in the building.
2:37 And these are the best machines in the building.
2:38 With Core i7-8700s, 16 gigs of,
2:41 ooh, is that RGB RAM?
2:43 Very nice, very nice.
2:45 GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards,
2:48 165 hertz G-Sync gaming monitors,
2:52 about 10 terabytes of local storage for game files,
2:56 and premium gaming peripherals.
2:58 The team was apparently thrilled with the setup here
3:01 compared to their normal routine,
3:03 which is to find a house to rent,
3:05 to ship all of their gear up,
3:07 and then ship it all back when they finish.
3:09 So the plan from iHotel is to upgrade the hardware here
3:14 every year to make sure that they stay state-of-the-art.
3:18 Now, let's head into one of the rooms.
3:25 In-hotel laundry is actually something
3:27 I wish more places did.
3:29 It seems like such an obvious way
3:31 to make a longer stay more comfortable.
3:34 Anyway, here we are.
3:35 This is their standard room
3:37 with either two twins or one full bed.
3:40 You have got to be kidding me.
3:44 They are really proud of a lot of the gamer-centric changes
3:49 that they've made to the standard hotel setup.
3:53 So for example, every one of the rooms
3:56 has dual sound-isolating doors
3:59 that have been verified to keep inside noise
4:02 to 40 decibels or less,
4:04 and comes equipped with not one, but two separate full,
4:10 sledge gaming rigs equipped with 32-inch monitors,
4:14 GTX 1060 video cards, Core i5 CPUs, 16 gigs of RAM,
4:21 a full set of gaming-grade peripherals,
4:24 including the chair, and yes, again,
4:29 with the 10 terabytes of local storage
4:32 so you can jump on your favorite game launcher
4:34 and download whatever you want to it.
4:37 The boot drive wipes itself upon reboot,
4:40 so you don't have to worry about someone
4:42 accidentally getting into your account
4:44 if you check out and forget to sign up.
4:47 Some other aspects of the room that I appreciate
4:49 as someone who travels a fair amount
4:51 is that there are tons of outlets,
4:54 both normal wall plugs and USB ones
4:57 so that you can charge all of your crap.
4:59 And then this one in particular on the bed here
5:02 is freaking brilliant.
5:04 Why doesn't every hotel do this?
5:07 An international plug in the room,
5:09 so you don't have to, I don't know, do anything.
5:10 I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know.
5:10 Arrive, you're all jet-lagged,
5:13 realize that you can't plug in your whatever thing
5:16 and spend the first couple of hours of your vacation
5:19 buying some stupid adapter
5:21 that you accidentally left sitting on the bed at home.
5:24 The TV setup is pretty slick too.
5:26 So I don't recognize this brand,
5:28 and I get it, I don't know, it looks okay,
5:30 but it's a 4K TV that, more importantly,
5:35 is connected in a really cool way.
5:38 So this system over here closest to the bed
5:40 has an HDMI connection over to that TV.
5:44 So that means that you can run anything you want on it.
5:47 You just set this up on here, full screen,
5:50 and bippity boppity, wham!
5:52 You are watching Linus Tech Tips
5:54 from the comfort of your bed.
5:57 And it's not just limited to their systems.
5:59 So here on the side of the bed, again,
6:02 is another HDMI input for the TV,
6:06 a headphone jack so that you can listen
6:08 using headphones if you'd prefer,
6:10 and a USB port so that if you were running,
6:13 say, for example, your phone as an output to the TV,
6:16 you wouldn't run out of battery
6:17 while it sits here on the nightstand.
6:19 Now, if you don't pack the necessary cables,
6:22 they provide them for free,
6:23 along with a handful of other useful extras.
6:25 I mean, most of our focus so far
6:27 has been on the gaming features,
6:28 but this is still a hotel.
6:32 So if the bed or the bathroom sucks,
6:35 you're going to have a bad time.
6:37 Fortunately, they went full fancy
6:40 with the new Orland mattresses.
6:42 They put a fridge in every room,
6:44 which I personally really appreciate
6:46 because it is impossible to find cold water over here.
6:49 And check these out, Japanese-style toilets
6:54 with heated seats and water cleaners,
6:58 if you prefer those.
7:00 Squeaky clean.
7:02 This next room style is actually one
7:04 that they don't advertise on their site.
7:07 So it's designed to look and feel, kind of, like,
7:11 a college dorm for them nostalgia feels.
7:15 With that said, other than replacing the regular bed
7:18 with a bunk bed, it is pretty similar to the standard room.
7:23 Although, there is one thing that I missed before
7:25 when I was showing the standard room.
7:27 This is really cool.
7:28 Ah, it's over here, I've got to crawl under the desk.
7:31 Every room gets its own dedicated Wi-Fi access point,
7:36 so you don't have to worry about, you know,
7:38 getting that room at the end of the hall
7:40 with the crappy reception.
7:41 Now it's time for the best for last portion of our tour.
7:46 They only have one of these, but this is the capsule room.
7:51 It's their standard room, but in space.
7:56 So first, they've got the Wall-O gaming machines.
8:00 Six in total, so you could have your whole team
8:03 in here at once.
8:04 And then second is the sleeping pods.
8:08 So each of these things is equipped with a memory foam
8:11 mattress.
8:12 It's isolated for noise and light.
8:16 It's got individual climate control.
8:19 It's got its own power connectivity,
8:22 so regular AC and USB.
8:25 It contains its own safe, and check this out.
8:29 It's got its own TV.
8:31 So in the capsule room, you can travel with your friends
8:34 or colleagues and never actually see them.
8:39 If you get stuck,
8:41 there's an SOS button, by the way.
8:44 So you don't have to worry about that.
8:48 So then, who exactly is staying in a place like this though?
8:55 I mean, you can't fill up an entire hotel year round
9:01 just based on traveling e-sports players.
9:04 Well, as it turns out, after they built the iHotel,
9:08 they found business coming from unexpected places.
9:12 Local families,
9:13 have come to stay as a treat for their kids
9:15 for doing well in school or whatever,
9:17 because they don't have a nice gaming PC at home.
9:20 Some folks just come and stay here for the fast internet.
9:25 International stock traders and would-be concert goers
9:28 who want to have their best chance to buy a hot ticket
9:32 that's likely to sell out in 10 seconds
9:34 have frequented this place.
9:36 And all other things being equal,
9:38 I would definitely choose a hotel like this
9:40 for Linus Media Group's travels.
9:42 I mean, even if we didn't end up using the machines
9:45 for video editing, the peripherals, the extra monitors,
9:50 things like that are fantastic.
9:52 And I mean, I no longer take for granted
9:55 stuff that seems fairly simple,
9:58 like a decent sized desk and a wired network connection.
10:02 In fact, most of the big hotels that I've stayed at
10:05 in the last couple of years
10:07 have been disabling their Ethernet ports
10:10 for some inexplicable reason.
10:12 So let me know what you guys think.
10:15 Are you a gamer?
10:17 Are you some other kind of consumer
10:19 who would be interested in this?
10:21 Or do you think the whole concept is just crazy?
10:24 I want to see your comments below.
