0:00 I'm sure I'm not the only one who's had the experience of you know cruising down
0:04 the freeway with the Windows open not really paying attention to how fast
0:09 they're going and Bam flashing lights in
0:12 the rear view mirror and 5 minutes later you're holding your very own free ticket
0:17 to traffic court and a larger insurance
0:20 bill if only you'd been using a radar
0:24 detector a venerable piece of technology that speed demons everywhere have been
0:28 using for years to avoid such unpleasant surprises but first a little bit about
0:33 how radar Works police commonly use what's called Doppler radar to track how
0:39 fast passing cars are going and although Doppler radar is usually associated with
0:44 weather reporting the way it works makes it a pretty versatile tool a standard
0:49 police radar works by firing a radio signal at nearby traffic which hits
0:54 whichever car is being tracked and returns to the radar gun for analysis
0:59 the fact that the car is moving means that the return signal will have a
1:04 different frequency from the original this is called the doler effect and is
1:08 the same reason that an ambulance siren sounds lower in Pitch when it's speeding
1:13 away from you this difference in frequency is converted to a speed
1:17 readout that the officer can see to determine if you are exceeding the speed
1:21 limit Doppler radar Simplicity has made
1:24 it the tool of choice for traffic cops the world over for many years so
1:29 consumer grade radar detectors work then by detecting frequencies in the Doppler
1:35 bands since the radar signals are really just radio waves radar detectors operate
1:40 a lot like the radio in your car that you use to listen to music they're just
1:44 tuned to Doppler frequencies which are much higher than am and FM frequencies
1:50 So then whenever your radar detector picks up a Doppler signal it will alert
1:54 you in some way so that you can slow down before you get slapped with a
1:58 ticket of course though radar detectors aren't perfect and things like adaptive
2:03 radar cruise control on newer cars and even those automatic doors that you see
2:08 at the supermarket use frequencies in the Doppler range meaning that false
2:12 alarms are often a fact of life for people that use radar detectors but
2:17 aside from false alarms hampering Effectiveness police know how popular
2:21 radar detectors are so many police departments are now using liar which
2:27 uses a more focused beam of infrared light as opposed to Doppler radar which
2:31 tends to scatter making it easier to pick up liar detectors exist as well but
2:37 since police Point liar guns at one
2:40 smaller spot on a car often the license plate the detectors tend to be a lot
2:45 less effective but hold on a second I mean what if instead of just detecting a
2:50 police radar you could actually keep it from tracking your car well some more
2:55 sophisticated radar detectors have a jamming feature that emits extra signal
2:59 sign to confuse police radar and liar
3:03 but not surprisingly these are illegal
3:06 in many places since the cops don't exactly appreciate it when you actively
3:11 interfere with their equipment regular detectors however are allowed in quite a
3:16 few places including all but one US state a few provinces in western Canada
3:21 New Zealand and some countries in Europe just make sure you know what the laws
3:25 are in your area before you buy so you don't get smacked down with a camera of
3:30 irony because the device that you bought to avoid a traffic ticket just earned
3:34 you a traffic ticket or of course I mean
3:37 we could all just slow down and uh you know Kum bya and all that stuff however
3:43 if my experience rolling around out there and rush hour is any indication I
3:47 think we'd have a better chance of seeing Ford try and sell the Flintstone
3:51 mobile speaking of trying to sell I'm going to try and sell you guys on
