0:00 there are two types of Linus tech tips viewers
0:03 the ones who can't remember trackball mice and the ones who are old
0:08 like me that's right kids in the late 90s
0:13 these bizarre pointing devices were
0:16 almost as popular as a standard
0:20 ball mouse you know the kind that had its balls
0:24 down below but then fell into obscurity as optical
0:28 and laser mice gained dominance but are trackballs bouncing back
0:34 well logitech or well logie logitech
0:39 is giving it a shot meet the mx ergo
0:42 their first trackball in nearly a decade
0:46 and the video is brought to you by tunnelbear which makes it easy to
0:51 privately and securely browse a more open internet to try tunnelbear for free
0:55 go to tunnelbear.com
1:07 at 260 grams the ergo is twice as heavy as
1:13 your typical mouse but that's fine
1:17 like other trackballs it is not used by
1:21 sliding it around the desktop instead you actually move the pointer by
1:26 spinning this optically tracked ball with your right thumb
1:31 the ergo is beautifully designed the soft touch rubber finish that covers the
1:36 entire top of the mouse gives it a premium look and as for the feel
1:42 well it can leave your hand a little hotter than you might be used to but
1:46 we're inclined to overlook this because with the base set to its upright
1:50 position reducing pronation or scissoring of the
1:54 ARM bones it positions the user's hand similarly to a vertical mouse
1:59 it is extremely comfortable i guess that's probably where the name
2:03 comes from with that said what's good for the wrist
2:07 isn't always good for the thumb moving the cursor especially a long distance
2:12 downward feels kind of like doing thumb crunches unless you reposition
2:17 your hand let's take a look at the buttons the
2:20 left and right clicks are rated for 10 million and are otherwise
2:24 pretty darn standard these back and forward buttons are both
2:28 easily accessible with your index finger as long as you don't have child size
2:32 hands like i do and the scroll wheel is rubberized moves smoothly and it
2:38 comfortably tilts to either side
2:41 now we've got a couple of more interesting buttons this one toggles precision mode which
2:48 like a sniper button on a mouse shifts the sensitivity for precision pointing
2:52 and this one is a logitech easy switch
2:56 so that you can switch easily i see what you guys did there between
3:01 devices with one of them using the included 2.4 gigahertz dongle and
3:05 another one connected via bluetooth and you might actually find yourself
3:10 doing just that trackballs are great for travel because
3:14 they require very little area to use air go an airplane tray table or ARM
3:20 rest will actually work nicely for much more comfortable mousing compared to
3:25 trying to use a touchpad and thanks to the ergos four month battery
3:30 you won't even need a charging cable with you fun fact though if it does die
3:35 it boasts a full work day's worth of battery after just one minute of
3:40 charging okay then Linus that's all well and good
3:45 but what is it like to actually use it
3:49 well if you've never used a trackball before
3:52 you might actually be surprised at how easy it is to convert our writer james
3:57 went into this thing with zero experience and after a few days reported
4:02 it become second nature and some actions like middle click
4:07 scrolling are actually even easier with a trackball
4:11 with that said it's not like there wasn't a slight learning curve and it
4:15 has some clear disadvantages if you use a multi-display setup or an
4:20 ultra wide monitor for example you might find yourself having to crank the
4:25 sensitivity just to cover all of that desktop real estate
4:29 and while okay that's true of any mouse
4:32 on the trackball in particular this really made accurate pointing on fine
4:38 things a feat of concentration since it
4:41 does tend to jump a bit when being turned very small
4:44 amounts the solution as it turns out though is
4:48 to turn on mouse acceleration which uh
4:51 how about that it turns out that setting does have an actual use
4:55 though you will want to disable it while you're gaming on your trackball
5:01 wait gaming on a trackball
5:04 yes that's right you can use a trackball for gaming and it actually doesn't suck
5:10 either our resident cs go guru ed was
5:13 actually up and pwning noobs in no time
5:17 though he did say that he was a little disappointed in the ergo's tracking
5:20 speed which may prove to be insufficient for players who like to whip their mouse
5:25 for quick turnarounds okay then Linus i'm interested you got
5:30 me but why should i buy then the 100 mx
5:34 ergo over logitech's own competing wireless trackball the m570
5:39 is the precision button easy switch and the smoother ball action
5:44 really worth the extra 50 maybe not
5:48 but they are nice to have and the 20 degree tilt
5:52 really is a lot more comfortable and surely there is no solution that
5:57 exists to prop up the m570
6:01 okay but in all seriousness though does the mx are go belong in your future well
6:05 there is still room to improve a stepless scrolling mode on the wheel
6:10 a low latency light speed connection higher endurance switches and a
6:14 dedicated dpi switch would all go a long way towards making this feel like a true
6:19 flagship maybe a g series trackball is
6:22 on the horizon but with that said
6:25 it's really good if you're a trackballer it's easy to
6:30 recommend as for if you're not well it is the kind
6:34 of thing you do have to experience on your own but
6:38 logitech has a 30-day return policy so
6:43 if you're a little ball curious then there's nothing to lose from giving
6:48 it a spin speaking of giving something a try
