0:00 every time we post a video about x-cool
0:03 gadget or why most expensive tech
0:06 there's a huge influx
0:10 of comments asking us to do a build guide for a super budget system or like
0:15 a cheap laptop roundup and typically i
0:18 respond with uh no that's boring
0:22 but today today is a different day we're going to
0:25 be looking at the evolution of the thousand-ish gaming laptop over the last
0:31 five years and if you enjoy it quietly
0:35 without any complaining origen's gonna give away an eon 15s at
0:40 the end okay okay
0:49 before we begin let's set the scene each of our five
0:53 laptops some of which were actually kind of difficult to obtain was priced at a
0:58 thousand ish dollars when it was new and has what we would consider
1:03 typical notebook graphics for the time
1:07 we have representatives from five Intel architectures sandy bridge ivy bridge
1:12 haswell sky lake and finally kb lake in
1:16 the currently shipping origin pc eon 15s
1:20 starting on the outside build quality at this price hasn't really changed much
1:24 almost all of our competitors share a decent build typically sporting a hybrid
1:29 plastic and metal finish on the exterior deck flex is basically non-existent
1:34 since the thin and light gaming machines that suffer from this are usually much
1:38 more expensive and both screenflex and
1:42 typing induced screen wobble were acceptable save for the lenovo y510p
1:47 whose screen's front glossy plastic is reminiscent of a 300
1:52 best buy special i'm really glad that whole thing went out of fashion speaking
1:57 of casings we've actually done not too bad in that department our three newest
2:02 pcs all have almost entirely black exteriors aside from some red accents
2:08 while the sandy bridge and ivy bridge models are just about the furthest thing
2:13 from a gamer aesthetic that you can get it's safe to say that i wouldn't shy
2:18 away from taking any of these into a business meeting again the more out
2:23 there gamery aesthetic seems to dominate the higher end gaming skus
2:28 onto screens then my eyes have become so
2:31 accustomed to ips and high ntn panels
2:36 that these older budget offerings induced what i call
2:39 a splitting first world problem headache
2:43 every laptop we tested features
2:46 i mean i guess features is kind of a strong word here a tn
2:50 garbo edition screen with the exception
2:54 of the eon 15s to be clear that one isn't the most
2:58 amazing panel in the world but the falling costs of ips displays overall
3:05 has driven a huge improvement industry-wide in the day-to-day
3:09 usability of value laptops gaming and
3:13 otherwise and full hd 1080p resolution
3:17 is a nice touch what a wonderful segue
3:20 who could forget about gaming laptops and their historically completely gross
3:24 tastic touch pads we actually sort of lucked out on this one every unit we
3:29 tested has what i would describe as a decent track pad it's no macbook or
3:35 razer blade but none of them are at that deal breaker level connectivity is
3:40 pretty strong throughout especially as we get newer and newer the hp elitebook
3:45 we picked up even has a full-size displayport connector on the side along
3:49 with eseta so that was kind of weird and usb3 first enters the spotlight with
3:55 haswell and thank goodness for that i was even a little surprised to find that
3:59 not only the eon 15s but also the MSI
4:03 gl62 have usb type c as well not to
4:07 mention that every one of them has an Ethernet port it's actually kind of
4:11 funny to see how the trends that i spend so much time complaining about like the
4:16 reduction in i o on computers aren't really affecting this segment battery
4:22 life isn't really accurately measurable on used laptops due to degradation but
4:27 we ran pc mark 8's battery life test anyway it simulates a light office
4:32 workload and to represent an average battery saving setup the brightness was
4:37 set to 50 percent and power profile to battery saving mode the results were
4:42 mostly unsurprising although origin xeon 15s scored a pretty respectable almost
4:48 four hours i guess that's where the power efficiency of each new CPU
4:52 generation comes in but none of that is really the point of our investigation
4:57 these are gaming laptops after all you didn't think we were gonna forget about
5:01 benchmarks did you silly goose for games
5:04 we chose one game from each year starting with when our first laptop was
5:09 released 2012. so we loaded up borderlands 2
5:12 bioshock infinite dragon age inquisition rise of the tomb raider deus ex and
5:17 ghost recon wildlands on each laptop
5:21 performance in this sector has for a
5:24 long time been underwhelming kind of
5:27 like no man's sky except more like
5:31 no man's frame rate even in the older titles like borderlands 2 at medium
5:36 settings the older laptops barely crack the 30 FPS barrier that is until you get
5:42 to the modern origin eon 15s this thing
5:46 completely wipes the floor with the other systems and for good reason
5:50 previous iterations of value gaming
5:53 laptops often used mobile variants of
5:57 contemporary gpus like the MSI with a
6:01 gt940mx and the y510p with a 755 m these
6:07 m gpus from my personal experience were
6:11 less likely to get driver updates and more likely to cause system stability
6:16 issues and crashes even when they did
6:20 have enough power by contrast current gaming laptops like our origin pc system
6:26 have full fat desktop graphics cards in
6:29 this case a 1050 ti that specs to pull a
6:32 whopping 70 watts at load with all the long-term support that comes with a more
6:38 streamlined product lineup so it basically comes down to this battery
6:43 capacities haven't changed much and neither has build quality from our
6:47 samples but creature comforts like displays have improved by leaps and
6:52 bounds and as for graphics cards both performance and reliability have
6:57 improved dramatically while on the CPU side power consumption especially during
7:03 basic workloads has improved to such a degree that it's no longer true that a
7:09 gaming laptop has to be unsuitable for
7:12 other tasks so hopefully you guys stuck around
7:15 because like i said before origin pc is giving away one of these bad boys not
7:21 this one this one's mine but you can enter to win yours at the link in the
