0:00 we have had all sorts of bizarro
0:03 keyboards through the lab lately from super ergonomic to super ergo no thank
0:08 you but the one thing that all of them have in common is
0:13 they're just not that cool to be fair
0:17 the kinesis freestyle edge isn't uncool
0:20 it just lacks the wow factor of the more flashy mainstream keyboard options that
0:25 are out there so then introducing the latest iteration of the
0:31 infamous ergodox easy keyboard a no
0:34 compromises ergonomic keyboard that actually looks as good as it feels and
0:41 for the first time ever now comes with user replaceable key switches
0:47 today's video is brought to you by zotac zotac's zbox pcs are compact and they
0:53 have different variants that are great for applications like streaming and
0:57 gaming check them out at the link below
1:09 looking at it the ergodox easy is kind of like a mashup of two boards from
1:14 rival ergoboard maker kinesis it's a split keyboard like the freestyle edge
1:19 but it has thumb clusters and ortho linear keys like the advantage ii
1:25 it's a small 76 keyboard which lands it
1:28 somewhere between a 60 and a 10 keyless so there's no function row but it does
1:34 have navigation keys wherever you decide to put them
1:38 now since ergodoc started out as an open source build your own board company
1:43 customizability is in the easy's dna they include f and j keycaps that don't
1:49 have tactile guides in case you plan on rearranging the letters in a dvorak or
1:53 colemat configuration and even if you
1:56 order your board with a legend on the keycaps which you're not even required
2:00 to do some keys are still left unmarked so as
2:04 to not be confusing after you customize your layout
2:08 and customize you will because the default layout is
2:13 pretty different for example the backspace is now more
2:18 easily accessible over here beside the a key while the apostrophe
2:23 is way down here under the z that is too far for me i'm very
2:28 possessive of my apostrophe key
2:31 now for his part james our writer actually went through nine iterations
2:36 before landing on the perfect layout
2:39 that sounds like a lot of work but that high number actually just goes to show
2:44 how easy it is to tweak the configuration
2:47 just use the online configurator tool and flash the firmware to save it right
2:52 onto the board and while you're at it you don't have a ton of keys on this
2:56 thing so you'll probably want to take advantage of at least a couple of the 32
3:02 available layers which you can switch between in some pretty cool ways like
3:07 switching only as long as you hold a particular key down or switching layers
3:13 but only for a single key press kind of like how shift works on your phone all
3:18 this customization does mean that yes this board
3:23 can take some time to get used to especially if you're not used to
3:27 ortholinear or non-staggered keys which
3:30 i guess then brings us into ergonomics the split board lets you tilt each key
3:35 module to keep your wrists from bending outward so that's good
3:38 but if you want to cut out wrist extension you'll need the nice and solid
3:43 but sold separately silicone buzz collector sorry excuse me uh wrist rests
3:48 and same goes for battling pronation you'll actually need the tent kit for
3:53 another 30 bucks extra it's not cheap
3:57 but the legs are metal making them nice and durable the cute little dipped feet
4:02 are available in white or black to match the color of your board once it's
4:06 installed you can tilt each individual leg through ratcheted steps or using the
4:11 included washers steplessly it takes longer to set up than kinesis
4:15 is also sold separately lift kit but the
4:18 end result is more versatile and feels
4:22 more quality in fact overall build quality has a lot
4:26 to do with the easy's cool factor it doesn't look like it was made in the
4:30 90s like many other ergonomic keyboards
4:33 and that beauty is more than skin-deep the keycaps for example are made by
4:37 signature plastics the printed set is double shot injected abs plastic with a
4:42 lower profile than most key caps and a
4:46 rough and surface finish on the top so they don't get that gross shiny look as
4:50 they wear out and the unprinted set is pbt with a special bonus as well
4:55 since there's no reason to move them around they're sculpted meaning that
4:59 each row has a differently shaped keycap for improved ergonomics
5:03 then underneath the keycaps it gets real
5:07 because you'll find one of 12 different switch types available right out of the
5:12 box wait i'm sorry did i say one of believe
5:16 it or not our board right here actually has five different switch types plugged
5:21 into it right now the easy makes swapping them out
5:25 well easy just use the included dual pullage
5:28 tool to swap out some cherry mx browns for reds on the wasd keys maybe some
5:34 blacks on the keys you don't want to strike accidentally like hue and
5:37 overwatch um maybe some super crunchy kale thick gold for the
5:43 number keys i mean hell yeah why not let's throw let's
5:47 throw some cherry mx whites in here for
5:50 i don't know these keys in the future you'll even be able to
5:54 order small numbers of extra switches directly from ergodocs but for now their
5:58 ordering system only allows you to buy a complete set
6:02 which i guess brings us nicely to our gripes it wasn't easy to
6:06 dox these marks but i have to talk about the cable
6:12 i appreciate that these are detachable and therefore replaceable in theory but
6:16 they stand out as the least premium aspect of the entire package not only
6:20 are they not braided they've got like printing on them like they just went to
6:24 a store and bought them next up is the lighting the underglow
6:29 pretty freaking sweet it does contribute to the coolness factor there's lots of
6:33 options for colors patterns and brightness but
6:37 is this as good as backlit keys
6:40 maybe that's a matter of opinion but i do hope to see that on a future version
6:44 of the board as for the bottom line whether to buy
6:48 that depends on what you're willing to spend just the board by itself without even
6:53 switches is 225 us dollars a basic
6:57 configuration then is 270 and if you add all the bells and whistles which to
7:02 achieve proper ergonomic status we'd recommend you're sitting at 355 dollars
7:09 as for any bonus key switches you want to throw in well that's gonna cost you
7:12 two so is it a lot for a mechanical keyboard
7:17 yes is it a lot for a programmable mechanical keyboard
7:21 yep is it a lot for a programmable mechanical keyboard with RGB lighting
7:26 it sure is but is it a lot for an ergonomic
7:30 keyboard actually no
7:33 so if you're looking for a board that's as functional as it is eye-catching then
7:36 the ergodox easy might be worth making the switch
