0:07 so you know how even some of the nicest smartphones on the market feel
0:11 disposable in the sense that you'll inevitably end up feeling pressured by
0:16 the newer sexier version a few short months later
0:20 well strap yourselves in here guys because it
0:23 actually seems like with their newest software update apple is trying to allow
0:30 users to squeeze a little bit more life
0:33 out of yesterday's hottest devices i mean of course you'll need more recent
0:38 hardware to use all of its features but iOS 12 will support gadgets as old as
0:44 the iphone 5s from 2013 and it may even
0:49 get a little snappier apple is claiming up to 40 faster app launches as tested
0:55 on an iphone 6s but performance improvements tend to be
1:00 standard fare for mobile os upgrades so let's look at some features that are a
1:05 little more unique although the augmented reality or ar
1:09 space has been largely pretty stagnant
1:13 one cool way it's being put to better use in iOS 12 is that your device will
1:17 be able to measure the dimensions of a real world object simply by pointing the
1:22 camera at it so this is a quick way to tell if say you'll be able to avoid paying those
1:28 gouging level bag fees on your next flight and while we're talking about the
1:32 camera the photos app is a little more powerful for the shutter bugs out there
1:37 is you can now edit raw images right
1:40 from your phone though you will have to import them from
1:43 an external device the app will also introduce a facebook ask feature though
1:48 that will suggest that you share photos with the people who are in them just in
1:53 case apple didn't already have enough information about who you hang out with
1:57 then if you'd like to hand them even more info siri has a new feature called
2:01 shortcuts that can execute a number of user-defined tasks for you almost macro
2:06 style with a single voice command at this year's wwdc apple showed this off
2:12 simply by having an employee tell siri i'm heading home
2:16 which prompted her device to ping her roommate activate appropriate smart home
2:20 features and give an estimated time of arrival
2:24 but if you don't want siri or anything else on your phone chirping at you iOS
2:28 12 offers some more robust options to deal with that as well do not disturb
2:33 can now auto cancel if it detects that
2:36 you have left a certain location or if a calendar appointment has ended so you'll
2:41 actually start getting messages again once your boss finishes droning on about
2:45 social media analytics or whatever and you can change your per app settings
2:50 directly from the lock screen now too so if an app keeps bugging you with
2:54 irrelevant headlines you can tell it to stfu permanently quicker than ever
3:00 making matters even better the notifications that you do want
3:04 also got revamped and we are finally getting Android style group
3:09 notifications that will sort things according to app and thread which is
3:14 especially useful if your inbox is constantly getting slammed
3:18 of course constant notifications might be a sign that you're glued to your
3:22 phone a little too much so iOS offers activity summaries both for yourself and
3:26 any offspring that you may have produced and you can restrict usage time per app
3:31 though parents out there we would ask that you
3:35 please don't do it for youtube because tech quickies it's an educational
3:39 channel right as for memoji well you can limit those
3:44 these are similar to animoji but they allow you to look like yourself instead
3:49 of a lion or a piece of poo or whatever
3:52 though you will need the iphone x depth sensor in order to use this particular
3:57 new feature even if you are rocking older hardware though you can still enjoy the
4:01 front-facing camera a little bit more now that you can facetime with 32 people
4:05 at once whoever's talking automatically gets the bigger tile similar to skype
4:10 group calls iOS 12 is also bringing student id integration to both iphone
4:16 and apple watch to make it easier to get into your dorm or pay for overpriced
4:20 textbooks if you're a student at alabama oklahoma or duke you'll be among the
4:25 first to get this functionality in the fall but more schools will be added
4:28 later on this year finally iOS 12 is trying to secure more than just access
4:33 to the campus gym it now offers a secure password generator built-in similar to
4:38 third-party password managers like lastpass and can even autofill those
4:43 six-digit security codes that you get over sms putting us one step closer to
4:48 the iphone no longer even requiring a user to operate it at all
