0:07 welcome to L techtips today we're going to be unboxing a brand new Sony Tablet
0:11 this is a 9.4 in tablet PC it features
0:14 Android Honeycomb and it comes in an attractive brown box that we're going to
0:19 go ahead and break the seal on because that is what we do on this channel we
0:25 unbox things and then we take a first look at them so here is
0:30 is my first look oh PlayStation certified
0:35 fascinating okay so the Sony Tablet this is the S tablet device Sony got their
0:41 little slogan here make believe got a picture of the tablet itself which looks
0:46 pretty slick although I would expect that from a Sony product PlayStation certified we already talked about on the
0:51 side we see not a whole lot on the other side we see not much here we see some
0:55 general specs so 9.4 in tablet 16 gig s
1:00 SD it has an SD slot an IR blaster now that's cool uh dual webcams Tegra 2
1:05 Bluetooth honeycomb and it is a tablet all right so not a whole lot to say for
1:09 itself on the outside of the box Al the IR Blaster is a very cool feature
1:14 because what that means is you can use it as a
1:18 remote very neat okay quick start guide
1:21 getting started here I'm just going to turn this around so everyone can see what we're doing
1:25 here um support website okay what's it want you to do in the Box okay well
1:31 we'll see what's in the box anyway how to charge the battery okay and then
1:35 turning on your device press the power button for three seconds well that is a
1:39 quick start guide because that's uh not going to take very long here's the
1:42 tablet itself that is a strange shape okay we'll get to that in a minute hold
1:46 on guys okay that is another quick start
1:49 guide press the button unlock the thing log into Google
1:53 okay you'd think they would have just put that on the quick start guide but I
1:57 guess not important information
2:01 uh FCC regulations and safety and whatnot okay and user license agree
2:07 really oh for certain software for your Sony tablet device okay and then limited
2:11 warranty statement so how long is our warranty this is
2:17 a probably a one-year warranty based on that tablets are generally one-ear
2:21 warranty but I'd hate to be wrong although I am wrong sometimes
2:30 okay give me a minute here guys go ahead and found it guys it's a
2:35 one-year limited warranty and it can be transferred to a subsequent
2:41 owner so that's kind of cool so that's kind of like XFX is uh dual dual
2:45 lifetime warranty except it's not lifetime it's one year but uh you can
2:49 actually sell your tablet give them your receipt and then they will have warranty
2:54 coverage from Sony if you decide to upgrade your tablet to something else uh
2:58 down the road so that's kind of neat all right we've got a power cord got a power
3:01 brick power brick I'm just going to show you guys the old iPhone size comparison
3:06 so you can get some idea of how big it is all right so there's that and then
3:10 there it is uh next to the iPhone itself
3:13 so you can kind of see how big it is not too heavy um I mean there's something to
3:18 be said for this longer cord style I
3:21 mean the uh Samsung Galaxy as well as the assus Transformer which I had here
3:26 just for size comparison both come with little proprietary USB cables that go
3:31 into like custom dot connectors and there is something to be said for a
3:35 longer cable like this because it means that you can put this next to your
3:38 nightstand bring the cable up onto the nightstand and charge it every night uh
3:42 conveniently rather than relying on it to
3:46 uh rather than relying on a USB extension cable to get the cord to be
3:51 long enough so here is the tablet itself and
3:55 the very first thing I noticed about it was this look at that it is not it it it
4:01 is on a slant so I guess the way Sony
4:04 intends for you to use it is sort of
4:07 mostly one way although it's not uncomfortable to hold in portrait
4:11 orientation either so first thing we're going to do is uh let's find the power
4:15 button and hold it for probably 3 seconds based on the quick start guides
4:20 indication okay there it is it's turning on right now what else do we have for
4:23 buttons here we've got a volume up volume down look at that a hardware
4:28 reset switch that is worth its weight in
4:31 gold because things happen from time to time and I'm not saying anything
4:35 particularly about Sony's tablets but
4:38 once in a while I have had Android tablets lock up and fortunately on the
4:42 one that locked up on me a couple times I was uh able to remove the battery in
4:47 order to hard reset it but if if I had
4:50 one that didn't have a hard reset switch and I couldn't remove the battery I
4:53 don't know what I would have done I would have had to wait for the battery to die in standby mode in order to turn
4:59 the tablet back on so that that would have been bad uh this
5:04 is looks like a speaker Grill of some sort okay so let's uh turn around this
5:09 way so here we find kind of a rounded textured you can see there's little uh
5:13 rubber no I think they're plastic little plastic bumps on it so that gives it a
5:17 very nice feel actually and you would be very unlikely to drop this tablet while
5:22 holding on to that part of it here we've got a headphone jack which is recessed
5:26 back here so you're not going to have any undue strain on your on your chord
5:30 we've also got an SD card slot as well as I don't
5:35 know what is that is that some kind of USB connector looks like a one two it's
5:41 five pin USB I think but guys correct me if I'm wrong on this one tell me what
5:45 that is if you know better than I do uh there's another speaker and uh okay give
5:51 me a sec guys oh no one more thing here is our power connector so here's where
5:55 this goes let's see is this magnetic or what
5:59 how's this work no goes
6:03 on looks like uh H oh it's
6:07 keyed so it goes in yeah I think it's
6:10 this way and I dropped it there we go so it
6:16 goes in like that so you can select your language to begin I'm going to select
6:19 English United States because English Canada usually isn't an option I can set
6:23 up Wi-Fi later okay pretty responsive so
6:26 far actually uh set up accounts later
6:30 let's see if we can just get to the home screen really quick here yeah there we
6:34 go okay so gliding around this is pretty much what I would expect from a Tegra 2
6:39 tablet in terms of responsiveness um they're all pretty much the same uh we
6:45 can connect to the internet here Wi-Fi
6:48 actually no this one's feeling pretty pretty darn responsive right about now
6:53 so turn on the
6:56 Wi-Fi add a Wi-Fi network oh no apparently that's the way to do it
7:00 manually okay give me a second here guys I'll be back so this is cool there are
7:04 actually some features here that I was not aware of that make this very unique
7:09 and very different from other Android tablets which let's face it are fairly
7:14 similar beyond the form factor or maybe the keyboard that they use the desktop
7:19 wallpaper they come pre-loaded with what ports they have these are all the
7:22 differentiating factors well Sony has found a way to take that standard
7:27 Android Honeycomb software and turn turn it into something very very unique so uh
7:32 we've got here let's have a look at the apps that they have pre-loaded here
7:36 Video Unlimited reader select app social feed remote control and video player so
7:41 this ties into a few things that we found on the Sony website which uh hold
7:46 on Game Loft oh they don't have the okay
7:50 well here let's go on to the Sony website and have a look at what they
7:53 have to say for themselves here so it's for PlayStation games it's e-reader for
7:57 ebooks okay music new movies through the Sony Entertainment Network it does work
8:02 as a universal remote which is very cool that is a feature that this particular
8:07 tablet has over the other tablets that I
8:10 am aware of especially if it works well
8:13 and you can share View and transfer personal videos and photos music to your
8:16 DLNA compatible PC TV or speakers which is also really neat because a tablet
8:21 especially when it's only got like 16 gigs of storage on it is only as useful
8:26 as the amount of data that you can use on it at any given time so speaking of
8:30 which unlimited entertainment gives you access to Sony Music as well as videos
8:35 very very cool Swift and smooth experience like I said we've come to
8:39 expect that from Tegra 2 and it is PlayStation certified so yeah you can
8:42 actually play Playstation games on this tablet using the onscreen controller and
8:48 then the obviously the screen ergonomic design to fit your hand so what they're
8:52 saying about this particular design is that it's supposed to feel kind of like
8:57 uh like a rolled up magazine like a when you peeled the cover over or or an open
9:01 book and it is comfortable you know what it is comfortable I'd say it's not quite
9:05 natural to me yet given that I've had it in my hands for like a couple minutes
9:10 but uh it's definitely something that I could get used to compared to the
9:14 symmetrical tablets that I am accustomed to at this time so other than that I
9:19 don't see too much more here uh nothing
9:22 about the panel technology that it's using although I can check here to see
9:27 what they have to say about that no they just say resolution screen size although they do say that the screen is using
9:31 true black technology whatever that means uh I don't know what kind of panel
9:35 it is but it looks pretty good I can't quite evaluate the brightness yet let me
9:40 just crank the brightness up and see what I think of it after that
9:45 so yeah looks quite vibrant uh the blacks are very very deep but I haven't
9:49 really seen the whites yet okay throw your content universal
9:54 remote control customized with Android market and I think that's pretty much it
9:57 I think the coolest thing about it by long shot is definitely the ability to
10:01 play uh PS1 games on the go on your
10:04 tablet which turns it into a very awesome gaming platform because you have
10:08 not only all the Android games but also PlayStation games as well as a great
10:12 little media tablet so that's uh that's
10:15 starting to look pretty neat to me actually so thank you for checking out
10:18 this unboxing of the Sony S tablet and
10:22 don't or Tablet S rather sorry and don't forget to subscribe to L techtips for
10:26 more unboxings reviews and other computer videos
10:29 okay so it actually comes pre-loaded with Crash Bandicoot which I have never
10:34 played but I'm trying to figure out right
10:37 now how to uh how to
10:41 start so we can see what the gaming experience is
10:46 like pretty neat though pretty
10:50 neat okay I paused it here we go so I
10:55 can run and jump okay so this behaves
10:58 like it kind of like an analog stick where it's not uh just straight and I
11:02 fell down a hole okay so I start over
11:08 cool I jump over the crab oh oh I think I jumped on the
11:14 crab yeah forgive me for not being very good at this guys sorry it's like the
11:18 first level I already died once whoa oh okay hold on oh I jumped on the
11:23 crab can I double jump no apparently not
11:26 okay so there you go guys that's the uh Playstation 1 gaming experience
11:31 that we can expect to have on the Sony Tablet very cool
