every once in a while a phone comes along that sparks a conversation or that
0:04
changes the way that we use our mobile devices
0:08
and for the people who don't actually want to carry around adapters and
0:12
relearn all of their gestures well for them there's the oneplus 5t a purely
0:17
incremental improvement over the oneplus 5
0:20
and now in sandstone white
0:25
today's video is brought to you by be quiet! the dark base 700 is an extremely
0:30
versatile case featuring RGB led lighting and a tempered glass side panel
0:34
window check it out at the link below
0:45
i first checked out the 5t when oneplus sponsored my trip to their new york
0:48
launch event and since then i've spent about a month using it and i've got a
0:53
few impressions to share oneplus slogan is never settle but
0:58
if we're being honest they come in at a lower price with a few key feature
1:03
trade-offs against the top tier flagships so
1:06
isn't that exactly what they're asking us to do well when it comes to
1:10
construction quality the original black 5t feels good with a great curved shape
1:15
nice clicky buttons and a satisfyingly smooth body to glass transition and then
1:20
the sandstone white adds a little bit more grip
1:23
and subjectively a better look though with that said if you're the type to
1:27
apply a dbrand skin this might not be a huge issue for you
1:31
the one area where you are settling is water resistance and this is
1:35
something that i would really hope to see oneplus address in the six
1:40
moving on to specs here's a rundown of the freshly launched sandstone white
1:45
edition it's exactly the same as the regular 5t which
1:50
is pretty much the same as any other flagship smartphone
1:54
at least until qualcomm snapdragon 845s start showing up in the wild sometime
1:59
later this year the decent sized 3300 milliamp hour
2:03
battery combined with the lower 2160 by
2:06
1080 resolution on the 18x9 OLED display
2:09
amounts to a settling or a compromise of sorts but
2:14
it's not one that i think anyone is likely to notice in day-to-day use i got
2:18
great battery life out of the 5t regularly making it through very
2:22
demanding days and the screen was sharp with no off-axis viewing anomalies or
2:27
burn-in on either of my units and watching movies in the wider aspect
2:32
ratio was a treat aside from the bottom mounted single
2:37
speaker which i would like to see addressed on the six as well
2:41
on the software we are settling a little bit again to be
2:46
clear i actually really like oxygen os it's damn close to stock Android but
2:52
with a few thoughtful add-ons like better screenshot management shortcut
2:57
keys oneplus signature notification toggle and this really cool feature that
3:03
i've mostly only seen on asian focused phones the ability to run multiple
3:07
installs of apps so you don't have to switch your login profile all the time
3:12
which is a huge boon for anyone with separate work and personal social media
3:16
accounts like me however
3:20
instead of shipping with oreo like the pixel 2 we're stuck with nougat until
3:24
oneplus rolls an update sometime in 2018
3:28
and you can't count on the support period either the 3 and the 3t both got
3:34
Android nougat with oreo to come but the 2 which was released in mid 2015 is
3:39
still stuck on marshmallow so your mileage may vary
3:44
now let's talk about the quality of life things oneplus facial unlock
3:49
isn't as good as face id on the iphone 10 or even samsung's iris scanner from
3:55
my anecdotal experience but now that winter is rolled around it
3:59
is a heck of a lot better than nothing so i definitely prefer that to taking my
4:04
hands out of my gloves or my pockets though it should be noted that when i
4:07
wasn't wearing gloves i was really pleased with the performance of the
4:11
rear-mounted fingerprint sensor even if i do continue to prefer front
4:16
placement as for the camera well ditto i guess it's missing some top tier
4:21
features like 480 FPS slo-mo and it's not across the board quite as good as
4:27
the best flagships out there but there are a couple of things that it
4:31
does really well one it just works it's got pro mode options
4:36
like the ability to see an on-screen histogram and shoot in raw but the
4:40
default app in its default mode is super simple to use and gets it right enough
4:46
most of the time and even their portrait mode is actually pretty good among the
4:49
ones we've tested and two with the second camera actually
4:54
dedicated to low light i got some really impressive shots in very challenging
4:58
situations like in a dimly lit aircraft i mean it's not like you're going to be
5:02
able to do up a poster size print with acceptable quality but
5:06
if you gauge a cell phone camera on its ability to capture the moment the 5t
5:12
with its quick launch with the double tap its fast shutter and acceptable
5:16
image quality performs admirably so i guess by this point in the video you've
5:21
probably picked up on my point by now the never settle slogan
5:26
is a bit i don't know let's call it optimistic
5:29
but i'm still going to recommend the 5t
5:32
because at 500 bucks for the base model it's cheaper than anything else that i
5:37
would consider competitive with the overall user experience
5:41
also a sort of related comment literally
5:45
as i sat down to write this script
5:48
my type c to three and a half millimeter adapter died forcing me to toss aside my
5:53
daily driver pixel 2 xl for the 5t
5:57
so i could plug in and jam out to some tunes like bloody hell cell phone industry why
6:03
are you doing this to me and as for oneplus
6:06
thank you for at least putting it off for one more cycle
6:11
speaking of putting it off why are you guys putting off getting a dbrand skin
6:15
for your mobile device or other device
6:18
dbrand makes awesome skins for laptops phones tablets consoles controllers and
6:23
more they use high quality authentic true textured 3m vinyl on every product
6:27
their cuts are unbeatably precise they measure many times to ensure they have a
6:32
factory fit for your product and not only do they look great dbrand skins
6:36
protect against incidental damage and scratches and many of them are grippier
6:41
than the stock finishes of your favorite devices so check them out they're
6:45
affordable they ship worldwide and they're available at the link below
6:49
so thanks for watching guys if this video sucked you know what to do but if it was awesome get subscribed hit that
