this is the hr2 it is big and heavy and
0:04
it is made by thermal right they are advertising this as a fanless CPU Cooler
0:10
so they're saying that you can actually run many of today's modern high
0:14
performance CPUs fanless completely
0:17
passive as long as you have some case air flow with this particular heat sink
0:21
so let's take a look at it the first thing we find is a thermal rate sticker
0:25
then we have an installation guide which shows us a view of how to to uh attach
0:30
all of the different mounting brackets it does include mounting for uh 775
0:36
1366 1156 as well as am2 as I recall uh
0:41
let me just uh we'll double check that when we get to the actual Hardware okay
0:44
so here's the included mounting hardware you can see this is clearly for am2 and
0:49
then this is clearly a multi- installation kit for Intel all right
0:53
let's see what we got for look at this it comes with a screwdriver check that
0:56
out Chrome vadium okay I don't actually
1:00
know how to pronounce that vadium vadium neat it's a screwdriver magnetic
1:07
hey it's magnetic too look at that do we have anything to test it on around here
1:11
okay here here yeah yeah here's a PCI back
1:14
plate it's not very magnetic okay well
1:19
that's okay you still get a free screwdriver with your heat sink purchase
1:23
that is a compelling bundle
1:27
offering okay mounting hardware I'm going to need my handy dandy Tech tips
1:32
knife which I now actually have there we
1:35
go that is officially open now so in
1:39
here we will find a variety of things we've got some rubber grommets we have
1:43
some fan Clips we have some thermal compound
1:47
cf3 next we have a wrench you got a wrench and a screwdriver you get like a
1:52
tool kit with this thing and then we have the am2 mounting hardware also am3
1:57
and then we have the uh multi back for Intel so uh here yeah 775 1156 and
2:05
1366 all right let's look at the heat sink itself since that's the most
2:09
interesting part of this video other than me of
2:12
course no I'm kidding I know the heat sink's the most interesting part so this
2:17
is the H2 and it has a couple of unique Design
2:22
Elements so we'll get started here once I finally have it out of the
2:27
bag that thing is H huge so first of all
2:31
it has a boatload of heat pipes you can see it's actually got six full u-shaped
2:37
heat pipes so that's almost 12 effective
2:40
heat pipes when you look at how they're all attached to the base it's a very
2:44
very shiny flatl looking base and we'll do the obligatory finger shot that
2:48
everyone in their dog seems to be determined to complain about but I don't
2:51
really care all right so you can see
2:55
first of all that this heat sink has a very very wide spacing for the fins
2:59
that's because it does rely on passive cooling so that means when this is
3:03
installed on your socket okay so let's say hypothetically it's installed like
3:08
this it relies on the heat that is
3:11
generated by the heat pipes transferring heat to the fins to Simply heat the air
3:16
and then the air will rise out of it or be pulled Slowly by a case fan and
3:22
that's it that's the only Force you have so that's why the fins need to be spaced
3:26
really wide so that it doesn't take a lot of pressure to push the air through
3:30
it now besides the wide spacing of the fins you can see what thermal R's done
3:35
is they've actually used their little um I don't know if they actually even have
3:39
a name for this but what they've done is they've cut little holes and bent up the flaps in every one of the aluminum
3:44
layers here and that gives us just a little bit more surface area so based on
3:48
that so you can see that's all the way through the heat sink I would probably
3:51
recommend mounting this heat sink this way either this way or this way because
3:58
that's going to mean that I mean heat rises so it means that you're giving the
4:01
air less resistance to rise up through the heat sink and cool your CPU now this
4:06
hole right here is probably why you need the screwdriver that's how you're going
4:10
to uh screw it in if you're using an
4:13
am2 uh socket so that's positioned right
4:16
there for that and then on the other side you can reach it quite a bit more
4:19
easily that's one of the considerations when you're building a heat sink this
4:22
big is how do you actually access the mounting hardware and uh so people can
4:28
actually attach it to their motherboard cameraman's giving me his iPhone for the
4:33
usual scale shot so you can see compared to an iPhone it would crash
4:39
it it's quite a bit bigger and heavier
4:42
okay so there it is from the side and let's just have a closer look at how
4:46
they've attached the uh the heat pipes down here at the bottom so it's six heat
4:50
pipes alternating so some of them go over to this side of the heat sink and
4:55
the others just go straight up in a straight U shape so all six of them are
5:00
aligned at the same level I've actually seen some coolers where some of the heat
5:04
pipes are a little bit higher and I don't know what that would do in terms
5:07
of thermal transfer but this way they're all as close as possible to the CPU
5:11
without touching directly and I think that pretty much covers everything I
5:14
wanted to say about the hr2 I'm actually kind of curious to try this one out and
5:18
see uh see how well it can do on even like a a core i7 or something like that
5:22
it's very heavy though
