0:00 what was the height of cool before the iphone hit the scene in 2007.
0:05 maybe for you it was busting out your motorola razor at
0:09 warped tour but for a lot of others it was actually the blackberry but beyond
0:15 the botanical name and an addictiveness that led observers to call it the
0:19 crackberry the blackberry was actually a very different kind of smartphone from
0:23 what we're used to today it was actually initially marketed to business people as
0:28 an alternative to lugging around the slow heavy laptops of the late 1990s and
0:34 early 2000s in fact blackberry employees
0:37 even gave the devices a way for free trials to people that they saw using
0:43 laptops encouraging them to give the blackberry a try because it was an
0:48 always connected device that would instantly notify the user if they got a
0:52 new email now because email was quickly becoming a preferred method of
0:56 communication for businesses a device with push email notifications as well as
1:02 an ergonomic full qwerty keyboard that made typing significantly easier than on
1:07 other handheld devices caught on pretty quickly remember guys
1:11 this was before touch screen technology became widespread and although cellular
1:16 data speeds at the time were very slow
1:20 sending and receiving a few lines of text in an email didn't require much
1:24 bandwidth so suddenly there was this device that was much more convenient
1:29 than either a laptop or a palm pilot
1:32 which for the earlier models had to be synchronized manually with your pc so
1:37 blackberries quickly found their way into the hands of executives and
1:41 politicians everywhere not just for email but also to keep their personal
1:45 information safe thanks to the additional encryption of blackberry
1:49 messenger compared to traditional sms instant messaging this set the stage for
1:55 the company to keep expanding and eventually release a very successful
1:59 line of devices that we would recognize today as true smartphones albeit still
2:05 with the full physical keyboard that became one of blackberry's signature
2:09 features and then the iphone hit the scene and it
2:13 didn't take long for the blackberry to fade away into obscurity
2:17 but why was this just a result of hype from
2:20 apple's flashy advertisements with
2:24 white earphones well it turns out that while that may
2:28 have been a factor blackberry also missed some key indicators about where
2:32 the industry was headed when the iphone was announced blackberry was still
2:37 growing by leaps and bounds and they didn't see the point in trying to
2:41 compete with a device that they viewed as something for younger less serious
2:45 consumers and to boot the blackberry execs assumed that cell networks simply
2:51 wouldn't be able to keep up with how much data the iphone was designed to
2:56 send and receive instead blackberry decided to keep
3:00 selling primarily to business users that wanted a secure platform and honestly it
3:06 kind of seemed to make sense at the time as this was exactly the formula that
3:10 vaulted blackberry to their position as a major player on the phone scene
3:15 however business users were much more easily wowed by the iphone and later
3:21 Android phones as well than blackberry anticipated not only did the touchscreen
3:25 centric design of competing phones have more futuristic sex appeal iOS and
3:31 Android were more open platforms in that apple and google designed them
3:36 specifically with third-party developers in mind that could release thousands of
3:40 apps to expand their device's functionality blackberry on the other hand continued
3:46 to rely on first party apps at least in part because it still thought of its
3:50 phones as just that phones rather than the do-it-all devices
3:56 that now dominate the market the death knell though didn't come until
4:00 companies started figuring out that the more consumer-focused iphones and
4:05 Android phones that their employees already owned were just as capable as a
4:09 blackberry if not more so so at that
4:12 point turns out businesses just love saving money
4:16 who knew right they generally started having their employees bring those to work and use
4:22 them for that too instead of investing in a fleet of blackberries
4:26 and i mean there were other missteps too remember how controversial apple's
4:30 decision to dump adobe flash was well although it was inconvenient at the
4:35 time apple was ultimately correct that the mobile industry would move away from
4:40 it which you can learn more about here by the way blackberry on the other hand continued
4:45 to make supporting flash a priority even though the hardware inside their phones
4:49 wasn't powerful enough to run it anyway they also stubbornly ignored that
4:54 consumer sentiment was rapidly shifting toward favoring touchscreens over
4:59 physical buttons including on the business side so all of this meant that
5:03 blackberry went from controlling over 40 percent of the american smartphone
5:08 market in late 2009 to
5:11 zero in 2016. that's right my friends
5:15 blackberry the company has stopped making their own phones all together now
5:20 the blackberry name is still around and the flavor of Android that current
5:24 blackberry phones run is still being worked on by blackberry but long gone is
5:30 blackberry's custom-built mobile operating system and the phones you see
5:34 on the market are actually made by other companies under licensing agreements for
5:39 the name don't feel too sad for blackberry though i tried one once and
5:43 it was honestly wonderful it was both tart and sweet at the same time i hear
5:48 it's absolutely fantastic in pies just not as good as apple
