0:00 If there's one thing we know about school
0:02 here at Linus Media Group,
0:03 it's that things should be left until the very last second.
0:06 So here is a laptop roundup for back to school
0:09 that is dropping days before school starts.
0:14 Speaking of at the last minute,
0:16 if you wanted to instantly see your current
0:19 and past network activity,
0:21 you should check out GlassWire.
0:22 You can detect malware,
0:24 block badly behaving apps on your PC or Android device,
0:27 and you can use offer code Linus
0:28 to get 25% off at the link below.
0:39 So our first category for our top five sort of here
0:43 is the budget machine.
0:45 Being a student is pretty much synonymous
0:47 with not having disposable income,
0:49 or at least not having any leftover
0:51 after your shopping cart's full of ramen noodles
0:53 and your binge drinking.
0:54 So what's the best way then to get something
0:56 that is functional enough on the cheap?
1:00 You might think that you want a Chromebook, but you don't.
1:05 Yes, 90% or even 95% of the time, it'll work fine.
1:10 But that other five to 10%,
1:14 well, let's just say that no one is gonna be clamoring
1:17 to be in a study group with you.
1:19 Like having to use the online version of Microsoft Office
1:22 or MATLAB is functional for the most part,
1:26 but in the end, you'll have wasted a lot of time
1:28 just getting to where everyone else started.
1:31 So with that out of the way,
1:32 let's talk about what you should look for.
1:35 To get the best value,
1:37 we can't be too picky about the exact model,
1:39 but eight gigs of RAM,
1:40 and an SSD are both musts these days.
1:44 And as for the CPU, well, per core performance
1:48 hasn't changed much in the last couple of years.
1:50 So any dual core is gonna do us pretty nicely,
1:53 but power efficiency has.
1:56 So look for a sixth or seventh generation Intel on sale.
2:01 We ended up finding a Dell Inspiron 15.6 inch
2:04 that met our requirements for 95 bucks off at Best Buy.
2:07 That's under $300.
2:09 So if we were to grab that,
2:10 and slap this $35 SSD in it, we're sitting pretty.
2:15 If you've got a bit more to spend though,
2:17 we'd recommend the Surface Go.
2:19 It's super small,
2:20 and unlike previous cost down surfaces like the RT,
2:24 it runs full fat Windows 10 for when you need it.
2:28 Now, it isn't the fastest little laptop or the cheapest,
2:32 but for $600, including their touch cover keyboard,
2:36 the Surface Go is hard to beat.
2:38 It's got an excellent screen.
2:39 It's got a touchscreen.
2:41 It's got solid battery life,
2:42 and it's got a pretty good little keyboard on it,
2:46 with little, of course, being the operative word.
2:49 So it's got everything a student needs.
2:51 And if you grab an optional stylus for it,
2:53 it is fantastic for taking notes in tablet mode.
2:58 The next step up from there is to go from the small
3:00 and portable Surface Go to the slightly larger,
3:03 but also very portable LG Gram.
3:07 With a great IPS display for watching movies,
3:09 a decent amount of power coming from its quad core processor,
3:13 and heaps of battery life,
3:15 you can leave your power brick at home
3:17 without worrying about locating a plug later on in the day.
3:20 The socking lightness of the Gram
3:22 will also have your back thanking you
3:23 for not getting that gaming laptop.
3:26 Though with that said, if you are a hardcore gamer,
3:29 and you can't rely on a secondary cheap desktop
3:31 for your fix, we do still have some options for you here.
3:35 First up then is the Acer Nitro 5.
3:38 Coming in at $800,
3:39 this guy packs some serious punch.
3:43 With a four core Core i5 that goes up to four gigahertz
3:47 and a GTX 1050 TI,
3:49 this thing can handle basically any game on the market,
3:52 as long as you don't expect to crank up the in-game settings.
3:56 Alongside this one is also the Dell G3,
3:59 which has pretty much the same specs,
4:02 but it'll cost a bit more with the benefit being
4:05 that you don't have to go to meetings
4:07 carrying around the flashier Nitro 5.
4:09 Which is probably enough to sell this thing
4:12 to a lot of people.
4:13 Finally, if the 1050 TI doesn't quite have the grunt
4:17 that you're looking for,
4:18 then the GTX 1060 and the Predator Helios 300
4:22 is available for not much more than those two.
4:25 All three of these devices are highly recommended,
4:28 assuming though that you don't mind trading
4:31 some battery life for performance.
4:35 Now, everything up until now
4:37 has had its nice little niche carved out for it.
4:39 But what if you're looking for the all-rounder laptop?
4:43 Power, portability, battery life, and style?
4:47 Well, my friend, then you are looking for the Dell XPS 15.
4:52 With a quad-core CPU, a GTX 1050,
4:55 one of the best keyboards in the biz,
4:58 not to mention an awesome screen,
4:59 the XPS 15 is maybe the most laptop-y laptop ever.
5:05 Like there isn't a whole lot that you can point at
5:07 and say is really special.
5:09 There's nothing special about it
5:10 unless you opt for the two-in-one version.
5:12 But everything that it does, it does to near perfection.
5:17 That is, as long as you don't need to be on
5:19 lots of conference calls,
5:20 because the webcam kind of looks up your nose.
5:24 So that's it for what's in front of me.
5:25 But in response, before you say,
5:27 but Linus, the only way to get laid in college
5:30 is with an Apple logo.
5:31 First of all, that's not entirely correct,
5:33 but if you have to have an Apple laptop,
5:36 we will still tell you which one's the best one to pick.
5:39 In our opinion.
5:40 Frankly, you're an idiot if you buy the MacBook Air
5:43 before it gets its rumored refresh,
5:45 because it currently rocks a fifth gen processor
5:47 when almost everything else on the market
5:49 has moved on to eighth gen.
5:52 The MacBook isn't too bad,
5:54 but it is still a processor generation behind.
5:57 And as for the MacBook Pro,
5:59 well, the one without the touch bar is behind the times,
6:02 meaning that if you must have a Mac,
6:04 we're gonna recommend the MacBook Pro 13 inch.
6:07 With an eighth gen Intel chip,
6:08 it's got the best touch pad around
6:10 and it's got a great screen,
6:11 though we are still annoyed that you're paying
6:13 that much money for a laptop without a touchscreen.
6:17 I personally find that a touchscreen
6:19 makes a much bigger difference than you might expect.
6:23 Speaking of expectations,
6:25 you were probably expecting a word from our sponsor,
