0:00 have you ever been super excited to try a shiny new set of headphones you
0:03 plunked down a bunch of money on but walked away feeling like the sound just
0:07 wasn't quite what you expected maybe you got drawn in by an expensive marketing
0:12 campaign for a pair of headphones that couldn't possibly live up to all the
0:15 hype but you may have also overlooked their frequency response one of the key
0:20 things that separates one set of headphones from another but often only
0:24 gets one little line on a spec sheet usually a headphone manufacturer will
0:28 describe frequency response as has a range of tones that a headphone can
0:32 reproduce you might see something like 20 to 20,000 Hertz for example which
0:38 also happens to be the range of human hearing since most people can't hear
0:42 lower than 20 HZ or higher than 20,000 Herz it might at first look like a cheap
0:48 pair of headphones that lists this as its frequency response can reproduce
0:52 every sound you could ever want to hear unfortunately though those numbers are
0:57 only a pretty small part of the story because different headphones are
1:01 constructed in different ways there are pretty significant differences between
1:05 how various models will reproduce sounds within the low mid and high ranges even
1:10 if a headphone promises a frequency response well beyond your range of
1:13 hearing every frequency might not be reproduced with the same loudness or
1:18 Clarity the result could make you end up feeling like you're listening to
1:21 something through a pretty bad equalizer even if you're not using one at all so
1:25 how can you know whether a particular pair of headphones will sound the way
1:28 you expect while this can be pretty tricky until you actually try them out
1:34 many popular headphone models have been tested by various independent websites
1:38 and even individual hobbyists with the actual frequency response being plotted
1:42 on graphs that show how loud the headphones get at each frequency many
1:47 less expensive headphones have what's called a v-shaped sound signature
1:50 meaning that they have emphasis on the bass and the treble instead of the
1:54 mid-range forming a vshape on a frequency response graph other kinds of
1:58 headphones are more Bas heavy and are louder in the low range or are bright
2:02 and have more emphasis on the treble but if you want a very true to the recording
2:07 sound that isn't skewed in any particular direction it's a good idea to
2:10 find a set of headphones with a flat or neutral sound signature that can
2:15 reproduce lows mids and highs more or
2:18 less equally and although many audio files go for neutral sounding headphones
2:22 this doesn't necessarily that they're the best for everyone for example many
2:27 people who like electronic music or hipop pop go for basier headphones that
2:32 let them feel the lows a little bit more
2:35 ultimately of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that includes
2:39 sound too so at the end of the day what's most important is buying
2:42 something that you think sounds good just don't let yourself be swayed too
