0:00 so guys this is going to be a bit of a voyage of Discovery episode of my video
0:04 blog I have the p67a
0:07 gd65 which I was able to manually tune in an overclock of 4.7 GHz on my core i7
0:15 2600k unlocked processor and MSI asked
0:19 me to try out their OC gen2 button so this is their one button
0:24 overclocking I press the button I'm pressing the power switch and now we're
0:27 going to find out how close you can get to my manually tuned over clock by just
0:32 pressing that button on your MSI Motherboard so first of all we're going
0:36 to boot up uh I've already set the hard
0:40 drive to ahci mode in the BIOS so uh
0:45 hopefully that is still NOS is there OC
0:48 Genie is enabled uh it's not recommended to change anything in the BIOS menu but
0:53 changing the the mode of your SATA controller is probably still okay so I'm
0:57 going to go ahead and do that just to make sure that um oops that's the wrong
1:02 thing it's under Advanced it's under integrated peripherals yeah so we're
1:06 still in ahci mode so it didn't reset that I'm going to press F10 and restart
1:10 and let's find out what OC Genie has set
1:13 this chip to so we're going to boot into Windows and that's probably going to
1:17 take a minute or so so maybe I'll talk about military Class 2 while we wait so
1:23 military Class 2 highly conductive polymerized capacitors up to eight times
1:28 the lifespan of a regular Sol ID capacitor super farite choke is 30%
1:33 higher current capacity than a standard traditional choke and then solid
1:38 capacitors give you 10 plus years Ultra long lifetime uh yeah it's not doing
1:42 anything yet okay uh cameraman's telling me I should pay attention to the screen
1:46 but it's not doing anything so they're saying up to 10 plus years of Lifetime
1:50 Under full load so that's assuming you're gaming for 12 years straight
1:54 without sleeping which some Wild players could probably do so there you go that
1:59 could be a real real istic usage scenario for some people okay we're booted up into Windows yay okay so I've
2:04 explained this a few times in the past it always uh asks me to reactivate every
2:09 time I change Hardware so I don't really bother to activate anymore so what we're
2:13 going to do is we're going to launch CPU Z and see what we're running at because
2:17 I actually have no idea so at idle we
2:21 are running at 3.5 GHz so that's a
2:24 multiplier of 35 with OC Genie turned on
2:30 okay and then let's see what happens if we run eight threads of prime
2:38 95 really I wonder if I'm doing it
2:44 wrong this really doesn't seem very OCD okay give me a minute and I will find
2:49 out what is going on here so this is me actually using a
2:55 manual so I'm going to see if uh
3:00 that'll tell me anything about how to enable OC Genie properly
3:06 because as far as I can tell I haven't done it right oh so there's an OC Genie
3:10 software application okay so that's the only
3:14 thing in there so I'll I'll keep I'll keep checking manuals and I'll let you
3:18 guys know if I figure anything out
3:22 here okay so we're sort of trying to
3:26 figure out what's going on here it says here that you can disable the ocg
3:29 function in the BIOS setup which I haven't done so we're here in the BIOS
3:33 now and what the BIOS is telling me is
3:38 that we are overclocked right now including the RAM it's loaded an XMP
3:42 profile all on its own it's increased the CPU voltage it's increased the RAM
3:47 voltage and in theory we're running at
3:51 4.2 GHz of adjusted CPU
3:57 frequency so while you set okay we don't really need
4:02 to use MSI control center oops I right
4:05 clicked instead of left clicked here why don't we set that to enable just in case
4:08 that makes a difference so we're going to save our BIOS profile and then
4:13 reset so in theory OC Genie is working
4:17 now and we're going to boot up in just a
4:21 moment so that was me using a manual you'll probably never see this on Tech
4:27 tips again and I'm pretty sure you've never seen it before but but there it
4:32 is so what are they claiming so they're claiming ocg ocg enabled gives you up to
4:38 36% performance increase on the integrated GPU although I don't think
4:42 that actually works on p67 at least
4:46 that's my
4:56 understanding cameraman's like giving me a funny look right now
5:00 I've really run out of things to talk about it's okay though because we're in
5:04 the BIOS now or in the BIOS we're in Windows now okay so let's fire up CPU Z
5:09 and see if magically by rebooting once
5:12 there okay it works now so there you go
5:17 so 4.2 GHz is what we're running at I'm
5:21 assuming if we run eight threads so we're stressing out four cores to the
5:26 Max and now let's see what happens if we go ahead
5:30 and do something like say for example we run two torture test threads of small
5:36 fft let's see if it is leaving in turbo boost enabled or if it's going for a
5:41 straight overclock so it looks like MSI has gone very conservatively here
5:46 they're actually giving it about as much voltage as I gave it to reach 4.7 GHz
5:52 stable but it's better to go conservative and assume that some chips
5:56 won't overclock as well as others when you're doing like a a one button
6:00 overclocking method like this versus having it take it to the limits so there
6:04 you go OC Genie took us about half of the way there compared to manually
6:09 overclocking but I would still recommend a manual overclock versus a canned
6:14 overclock in this case so thank you for
6:17 checking out my video blog don't forget to subscribe to Linus Tech tips for more
6:20 unboxings guides reviews and videos and whatnot no you
6:26 should look at the ocg button that's what we're talking about good work
