0:01 compact lightweight
0:04 subdued inexpensive dongle if any of those words
0:10 are part of your vocabulary go ahead and delete them
0:14 right now because when MSI called us and
0:17 asked if we wanted to check out their latest and greatest iteration of the gt8
0:23 series we actually had to go check and see if we had enough space in the
0:28 warehouse and after careful consideration and a
0:33 game of Tetris in real life we realized that this photo on MSI's website was not
0:37 to scale so as big as it was we could
0:41 make it happen so fast forward two weeks and here we are with the MSI
0:47 gt83 vr7 RF Titan SLI by MSI or as I'll
0:54 be calling it Ryan but is its
0:57 performance as big as its name
1:01 let's find out shall we cuz that's what
1:04 we
1:14 do the Phoenix oour is a full-sized
1:18 minimalistically designed keyboard complete with Cherry MX switches and a
1:22 new white backlit variant check it out at the link below the first thing you'll
1:27 notice about Ryan aside from his aggressive shape is that he's freaking
1:34 uh huge if you know what I mean the
1:37 second thing you'll notice is that he is freaking heavy the laptop itself weighs
1:44 over 13 lb and when you add on the Twin
1:49 power bricks at 3 lb each that a evoke a
1:52 certain you know failed 9s game console
1:56 you end up with a total carry weight of
2:00 19 lb I hope you've been working out but
2:04 what all will you get to bring with you no dongles me thinks with a diagonal
2:09 screen size of 18.4 in and a maximum
2:13 thickness at the back of 69 mm Ryan has
2:18 plenty of room in the trunk for Hardware
2:21 he's packing dual GTX 1080s in SLI a
2:26 Ballin cooling system with 15 heat pipes
2:30 two 29 blade fans and a smaller 25 blade
2:34 fan and he's got room for io2 you get
2:38 support for up to three external 4K 60 HZ displays if you use the Thunderbolt 3
2:44 Port as a DisplayPort Port he's got a
2:47 Blu-ray burner and a plethora of audio outputs
2:54 including toss link and an extra
2:58 headphone jack for the excellent included ESS saber DAC for your portable
3:05 headphones not that you'll be using Ryan on the go much balancing the gt83 on my
3:11 bony frail lap is an exercise in
3:14 frustration a laptop this is not especially when you
3:19 consider the placement of the steel series designed keyboard on the subject
3:25 of which linear RGB Cherry MX speed
3:29 switches May appeal to some but I actually personally miss the tactile
3:34 bump of the previous models Brown key
3:37 switches to be clear this is still a
3:41 full mechanical keyboard on a laptop which is dope as as the kids say but
3:48 that doesn't make it immune to criticism not only did they again replicate this
3:54 key for some reason the significant lip around the edge of the keyboard returns
3:59 with no wrist rest included to make it more comfortable it is something you'll
4:04 get used to but there's definitely a learning curve and the same goes for the
4:09 trackpad I tell you guys the number of times that I typed something and reached
4:14 down to yeah right to its credit it's got a
4:19 smooth consistent feel with satisfyingly tactile buttons and touching this corner
4:24 turns it into a lackluster numpad for
4:27 emergencies but it clear clearly sidelined by the keyboard and the
4:32 internals meaning that's just another usability disadvantage though In
4:37 fairness to MSI if you're carrying this monstrosity around they probably expect
4:43 you to have a mouse in Your Wagon as well and you could even throw in a USB
4:48 numpad if you were into that sort of thing but will you also need some
4:54 speakers MSI doesn't think so and in
4:57 this case we actually agree the Titan's
5:00 four speaker one subwoofer setup got
5:03 plenty loud in our testing with a surprising fullness to the sound even if
5:08 it's a little light on the subbase and the aforementioned ESS saber DAC allowed
5:13 us to drive even high-end headphones with MSI's nemic 2 providing excellent
5:18 virtual surround for gaming before we move on to Performance testing though we
5:23 really need to talk about the display you don't often see an 18.4 in LA top
5:30 monitor but its strange size doesn't
5:33 make its Factory calibrated 100% srgb
5:36 IPS panel any less beautiful where it
5:40 does lose points is its resolution
5:44 refresh rate and lack of standout
5:48 features like g-sync a balls to thewall
5:51 gaming laptop powering a 1080p 60hz
5:56 gaming experience with screen tearing
5:59 feels a little like watching Emma Watson
6:03 get married to a gopher it's just a
6:06 total mismatch so then with all of that out of the way let's move on to testing
6:12 our Ryan is speced to the max with a one
6:15 terabyte twin mvme raid zero storage array that MSI calls super raid load
6:21 games Works in seconds all right then let's load games
6:27 we'll be comparing against our Sager
6:30 np9873 and the Acer Predator 21x on the
6:34 laptop side as well as two comparable desktop setups with the answer to the
6:39 most important question coming first is
6:43 Ryan worth his weight in frames per
6:46 second actually yes the Sager tops the
6:50 charts but the Titan gt83 crushes the rest of the competition
6:56 with our Predator 21x actually coming in
6:59 below our desktops to the surprise of
7:03 nobody who has ever picked it up
7:06 waited averages aside though the Titan found itself near the bottom of our
7:12 performance laptop pack with the direct X11 modes of both DSX mankind divided
7:17 and Rise of the Tomb Raider but gained significant traction with the DirectX 12
7:23 modes for Honor saw the Titan in turbo
7:26 mode pick back up to become the highest
7:30 of our minimum frame rate performers and only the GTX 1080ti desktop surpassed
7:36 the Titan turbo minimum in GTA 5 with
7:40 that said though its average frame rates were again at the back of the lineup
7:44 with Ghost Recon wildlands echoing that average result Under full ID to 64 load
7:51 our CPU got up to a Coy 88° while fermar
7:56 worked our heat pipes over time with toasty gpus at 85 and 90° with cooler
8:02 boost enabled temperatures dropped to 85 on the CPU with the gpus at 85 and 81
8:08 but of course it gets uh shall we say a
8:11 fair bit louder so who is the Titan gt83
8:15 Ryan Edition 4 exactly with its MSRP of
8:21 $5,400 and minimum effort one-ear
8:24 warranty it's not going to be winning any Top Value Awards I mean seriously
8:30 MSI you could have at least given us the full version of windzip to go along with
8:34 our Norton trial but I can't fault the
8:39 performance and while our desktops
8:43 obviously come ahead in terms of performance per dollar they aren't as
8:48 portable as Ryan and compared to
8:51 similarly spec offerings from Acer and sagger the gt83 Titan is right in the
8:58 ballpark or should I say baller
9:03 Park yeah I went there so you heard from your nephew or
9:08 niece or whatever that a VPN is a good idea and you go and you look into it and
9:11 you're like what DNS configuration port
9:14 forwarding are you kidding me tunnel bear takes all that crap out of setting
9:20 up a VPN for personal use you download tunnel bear it's available for PC Mac
9:25 Android iOS they even have a Chrome extension you press like one button and
9:31 boom your internet connection gets encrypted with AES 256-bit encryption
9:36 and you appear to the websites and services that you want to use online as
9:41 though you are some Anonymous person from some other random country allowing
9:45 you to access services that maybe you normally wouldn't be able to they've got
9:50 a top rated privacy policy and they do not log your user activity and the best
9:54 part of all of this is you don't have to take my word for it you can try it for
9:57 free with 500 megabytes of data and no
10:00 credit card required when you choose to get a year of unlimited data you can
10:04 even save 10% too by going to Tunnel bear.com
