0:00 there are a few things that stand out to me when i go back and look at the first
0:03 video that we ever made about the primary Linus media group camera our
0:06 sony fs700 first i'm amazed at how many
0:09 of the comments on that video are about how stupid it was to buy and how
0:13 overkill the camera is for the type of content we produce
0:16 second i'm amazed by how right those comments were i mean i knew absolutely
0:20 nothing about this device and how to unlock its capabilities all i really had
0:24 was these hopes for how we could use it
0:27 to evolve our content and grow this brand new company that i was starting as
0:32 long as we could find and keep the right talent around who did know how to use it
0:36 and then third i'm amazed at in spite of me not really understanding this
0:41 stuff very well when i made the call to spend eight thousand dollars on this
0:47 based on the promise of affordable 4k recording in the future i mean it's
0:50 still the most expensive piece of equipment that we've ever purchased as a
0:54 company how well it has kept up with us as our
0:57 needs have changed and how it continues to adapt with us a mere few days ago it
1:03 actually finally got the easy flexible
1:07 4k capability oh by the way if you think 4k is for chumps and are more interested
1:12 in triple surround curved 34-inch
1:15 monitor gaming rigs that video is coming soon make sure you're subscribed anyway
1:18 the 4k capability that i always wanted from it so i figured now would be a
1:23 great time to show you guys how it got there and some of the other ways that
1:28 it's changed over the last two years
1:37 the cooler master neptune 240m features an exclusive pump design and their new
1:41 celencio fans to provide impressive near silent performance click now to learn
1:46 more our early camera wig was very basic we
1:49 had decent audio from day one with a sennheiser ew 100 g3 and the kit
1:54 lavalier mic but mounted to our pretty simple tripod and head we just had the
1:58 camera body the wussy battery that comes with it the
2:02 hand grip that comes with it the built-in screen which is in the least
2:06 ergonomic position possible by the way sony the bundled zoom lens that can't
2:10 even maintain a constant aperture when zooming and the built-in sd card
2:14 recording slot that's responsible for many of the cameras early limitations
2:17 there wasn't an upgrade for that at the time though so we kind of had to live
2:20 with that but the first thing that we did change was to upgrade the battery to
2:25 some cheap third-party high-capacity ones for all-day operation at trade
2:29 shows and edsel and brandon i guess also got so frustrated with the kit lens that
2:34 they started bringing their own lenses in for us to use at work something that
2:39 we actually didn't address by buying our own company lenses until less than a
2:42 year ago lol the next upgrade was one that caused
2:45 some pretty heated conversations internally especially between me and
2:49 brandon because it represented not just a 400 plus
2:53 dollar investment into this listtech teleprompter but a significant stylistic
2:59 change in our content i mean a move away
3:02 from the off the cuff product impressions with a dynamically moving
3:06 camera that made Linus tech tips Linus tech tips to this premeditated scripted
3:11 content with a static camera placement and then b-roll i caved eventually
3:17 and honestly it and the redrock mount
3:20 something we originally bought to fashion a ghetto shoulder rig for show coverage and a galaxy tab 10.1 tablet
3:26 have turned into a symbol for what i think was a huge
3:30 turning point for us as content creators i mean youtube has changed and by
3:34 adapting to this more professional style
3:37 when we did we put ourselves on the leading edge of web tech review
3:41 production quality rather than allowing ourselves to fall behind even if it
3:45 means i'm reaching for my little remote at my hip here all the time i know quite
3:49 a few of you are wondering what the heck is he doing down there next up was another upgrade that brandon
3:54 pushed really hard for but that i didn't want to get you can probably see a
3:57 pattern developing here and we picked up a small hd ac7 external HDMI video
4:02 monitor i figured well there's a screen
4:05 on the camera why do we need another one but once again brandon was right because
4:09 not only did it help keep images in focus it's and a flexible ARM mount were
4:14 a huge ergonomic improvement especially
4:17 when shoulder mounting the camera so you can put the screen right in front of you
4:20 or shooting from awkward angles now glam b-roll adds production values
4:26 to your video but it also adds a lot of time especially when you're manually
4:31 screwing and unscrewing mounting plates every time you move the camera from
4:35 tripod to slider or shoulder mount or whatever else so brandon asked for
4:38 another tripod and a few sets of quick releases from kessler for fast camera
4:42 relocation and i kind of went yeah no problem you know i looked at the tripod
4:46 it's cheap no big deal but what these freaking plate and release combo
4:50 units are almost a hundred and fifty dollars a pop i mean what did they make
4:54 them out of he was right about the time savings though and they've probably paid for
4:58 themselves and saved pocket change that we would normally have had to use to
5:02 swap out camera plates but uh man
5:06 i don't even know what to say about those they were too expensive but i also
5:10 wouldn't return them because men are they ever handy it was around this time that sony
5:14 released their firmware update for the fs700 finally that would give it 4k
5:18 recording too bad that it unexpectedly cost hundreds of dollars and required
5:24 you to send your camera into a sony service center in order to have them
5:27 perform the upgrade fortunately they have a location about 15 minutes from
5:31 our office so aside from the inconvenience and cost the only really
5:35 annoying thing about the whole experience was that they refused to service our broken hand grip record
5:40 button claiming that it was normal wear and tear on the button and i was over a
5:44 month out of warranty i mean it turns out that they diagnosed it wrong anyway
5:48 so i found some other eighth inch cable
5:52 with a jack on the end soldered it onto it and it works like a charm now in fact
5:56 i think it even gives our camera a bit more you know character but it was still
6:00 a little frustrating the next one was a big upgrade the
6:04 second most expensive item for us yet including all the accessories so we
6:08 picked up some eneloop pro xx batteries for our wireless mic so we wouldn't have
6:12 to change out the batteries as much that was no big deal but then we got the
6:15 recording unit that we needed to finally record in 4k
6:20 or so we thought it cost five thousand
6:23 dollars for our convergent design odyssey 7q recorder an anson bauer
6:29 battery charger and mounting plate two 512 gig ssds with proprietary firmware
6:34 to work with it and a couple cables and it was only when our pre-order arrived
6:38 that i realized i hadn't really read the fine print and 4k recording wasn't even
6:42 enabled yet i mean we did get higher bitrate 1080p recording a slightly
6:48 bigger and noticeably better OLED external display with more onboard
6:51 diagnostics and stuff and the firmware update to record 4k raw including
6:57 continuous 240fps raw recording did come
7:00 pretty quickly and that did come in handy but i'd have probably held off if
7:05 i'd known that the 4k prores firmware was going to take a year after that time
7:10 because the 4k raw workflow is terrible
7:14 it's so much data it takes up so much space it's really hard to work with
7:19 it was at this stage that i finally bought some lenses so that brandon and
7:23 edsel wouldn't have to bring their own to work there wasn't a real quality
7:26 upgrade to the content or anything at this time though because we've replaced
7:29 brandon's tampon 24 to 70 with our own
7:32 tampon 24 sorry did i say tampon just a
7:35 bug brandon because i meant tamron and then we
7:38 picked up tamron's 90 millimeter macro lens for close-ups as well
7:43 the next round of upgrades has some pretty cool stuff in it our sennheiser
7:46 kit lav cable started fraying for the
7:50 second time so we preemptively picked up a countryman b6 lavalier
7:55 pretty sweet it sounds better than our old one it is so small that i can just
7:59 tape it to anything with tuck tape on the inside of my shirt or hide it in a
8:03 buttonhole and it's actually waterproof something we took advantage of when i
8:07 did the ice bucket challenge and it was also around this time that we finally
8:10 upgraded our old tripod head to the manfrotto 509 hd and man
8:16 i'm not a camera dork but
8:20 even i can tell the difference it makes smooth tilts and pans so easy that i'm
8:26 not convinced we even need brandon around anymore and unlike our old one
8:29 which in its defense did serve us well and has seen so much overburdened action
8:35 that the rubber on one of the knobs like came right off the lock is much more
8:40 conveniently placed on the left side of the tripod so a right-handed shooter
8:44 doesn't always have to be reaching around the tripod which is pretty nice
8:49 which i guess brings us to wrap-up time and the reason for us to do this video
8:53 now out of the box two years ago the fs700 could record 1080p at up to 60
8:58 frames per second continuously with audio and up to 240 FPS slow-mo with an
9:02 8-second burst and up to 960 FPS in a
9:06 2-second burst if you were willing to sacrifice three quarters of your
9:09 resolution the issue was that for both continuously
9:13 recorded and slow-mo burst footage
9:17 the sd card media was simply not fast
9:20 enough for high bitrate video files that are suitable for color correction and
9:24 while physically the camera has been rock solid other than that time we got it wet
9:29 and it wouldn't turn on until i disassembled the housing and dried it out for the weekend some significant
9:33 upgrades were needed for it to stay competitive now and moving into 2015 but
9:38 they pulled it off and i've got to hand it to sony i don't always like their way
9:41 they run their business but through their partnership with convergent design
9:45 they really delivered and we love this camera it was a great investment which
9:50 leads us to the last upgrade one we actually didn't have to pay any extra
9:53 for now while you may have noticed that we've done some 4k uploads in the last
9:57 little while we were actually using an older firmware that
10:02 took 4k raw footage and then down sampled it to 1080p prores
10:07 i mean we did discover that it looked really good even when you re-up
10:10 converted it to 4k so that's why some of our videos have been in 4k but it's
10:14 actually been kind of feco4k two days ago though the proper 4k prores
10:20 firmware dropped and now we are ready to go full 4k whenever we shoot with our
10:25 fs700 because we've also got our brand new secondary camera a panasonic gh4
10:30 that does internal 4k recording to high-speed sd cards and we've got our
10:34 upgraded workstations from the whole room water cooling project so
10:39 bring on the 4k baby we are ready
