0:54 time skeptic when it comes to NVIDIA and AMD conspiracy theories

1:04 purchase decision reinforcing rants and frankly they make my brain hurt
1:09 seriously Jake tried a lot of different search terms all the way from NVIDIA
1:14 driver hertz performance to NVIDIA broken how please
1:19 and not even one post contained concrete
1:22 evidence of a legitimate decrease in performance over time i mean don't get
1:27 me wrong there were a lot of posts about the 375.86
1:31 drivers memory clock issue but no one has gathered sufficient or
1:36 really any evidence showing that NVIDIA has purposely harmed performance of
1:41 older cards to force their users to upgrade through a driver update so
1:48 i decided to painstakingly
1:51 assign Jake the task of testing it ourselves
1:55 first we needed to pick some games we wanted a mix of ones that use only
2:00 standard features of the directx API and at least one example that uses NVIDIA's
2:06 proprietary gameworks then to ensure we weren't missing out on
2:11 a particular architecture that got kneecapped because it was like too good
2:15 compared to the new thing they needed to sell we grabbed a flagship from every
2:20 generation from gtx 680 all the way to
2:24 1080 ti with games and cards selected the next challenge was drivers we can't
2:30 test all of them so we eventually settled on the drivers one release after
2:35 the launch of each card that we used and
2:39 the most recent one available at this time so the idea then was that this
2:44 would show us a clear progression over
2:47 time is NVIDIA improving ignoring or
2:50 outright harming the performance of older cards once the new generation
2:55 comes out so driver by driver
2:59 card by card Jake ran almost 200 rounds
3:03 of benchmarks collecting three metric ass tons of data then he sat down to
3:08 organize it into some charts and the results are astonishingly boring the
3:14 most recent release seems to be a bit of a turret across the board so there's
3:17 that but in general not only did performance not decrease there were
3:22 small but noticeable increases over time in almost every case
3:28 due to the minuscule nature of these improvements
3:31 it's hard to see where they actually start and end so we're not much closer
3:35 to a clear picture of NVIDIA's internal policy with respect to product software
3:41 support but it does at least tell us that NVIDIA has never rolled out a
3:45 sandbag edition driver which doesn't mean they've never rolled
3:50 out a bad driver 375.86 hurt performance and sli issues
3:57 seem to come and go like shadow from final fantasy 6.
4:01 so what is going on then where are
4:05 people getting these ideas we think the perception mostly stems
4:09 from this when a new game launches
4:13 older gpus don't get the full
4:16 optimization treatment the way that the current ones would
4:20 that means that you might run into situations where older cards with more
4:26 raw power might be beat by newer ones
4:29 with less tech spot showcased this in their articles on project cars and
4:34 battlefield 1 performance which are linked down in the video description

4:41 outperforming a 780 ti
4:44 and there's another major factor the tech
4:48 not all graphic solutions are the same the goal with every new generation is to
4:54 tailor it for the features of the game engines that are in wide use or are
4:59 right on the horizon examples would be NVIDIA specific
5:03 features like hair works or general rendering techniques like hbao
5:08 plus ambient occlusion older silicon doesn't handle either of these things as
5:13 well because they either didn't exist
5:17 when it was being designed or NVIDIA guessed it wouldn't be widely
5:21 implemented the work of designing a GPU
5:25 starts years before you'll be able to buy one
5:29 i mean if you were in the pc scene a few years back you might remember this
5:32 happening with tessellation NVIDIA cards were and still seem to be much faster at
5:39 rendering tessellated meshes to such a
5:42 degree that AMD had to add AMD optimized
5:45 tessellation to their drivers basically removing a bunch of it and when crytek
5:50 controversially put an overkill amount of tessellation in crisis too
5:55 it completely tanked the ability of similarly performing AMD cards compared
6:01 to their NVIDIA counterparts so in this case your older hardware
6:06 literally wasn't made for the questionable decisions of game devs
6:11 in newer games so in conclusion then from our testing
6:16 NVIDIA does not appear to be slowing down older cards to encourage upgrades
6:21 the better performance from newer cards probably has more to do with their
6:25 engineers not just sitting on ass all day i mean look at it from their
6:29 perspective if they don't optimize this from generation to generation jensen
6:34 will yell at them what does seem like it's happening is
6:38 that newer game features aren't getting as much optimization for older cards
6:44 but i also think it's a little unreasonable to get too mad at NVIDIA
6:48 for this they support cards as far back as the 8000 series on Windows 10 and
6:54 while they might not perform clock for clock the same as they used to they
6:58 simply weren't built for modern rendering technologies so if you want
7:02 bleeding edge performance you need to be on the bleeding edge in terms of
7:05 hardware whether or not that's worth bleeding your wallet dry
