0:00 welcome to a completely new format here on lineus Tech tips it's our video
0:05 version of a guide we found somewhere on the internet oh wait so hold on a second
0:10 so you're saying that's not different from what we normally do oh come on I
0:13 mean there is at least a unique spin on it this time and on the subject of spin
0:18 if you haven't checked out empty Warehouse chair racing and subscribed to
0:22 our other channel Channel Super Fun maybe now is the time
0:35 The Cooler Master Nova touch tkl is powered by toer hybrid capacitive
0:39 switches for the ultimate typing experience and is now available for a
0:43 reduced price click my face to learn
0:47 more all right so what's different about
0:50 this online guide conversion is that we
0:53 are basing the video on content that was posted on our own website by the user
0:58 lays where he or at least I assume he
1:01 based on the pitch of his voice but you never can know demonstrates that you
1:05 don't have to buy an ASUS strick or EVGA
1:09 card with a fanless mode to get your GTX 900 series Maxwell based graphics card
1:14 to run completely silent at idol or even in lightweight games so let's start by
1:19 addressing the big question that a lot of people have first why on Earth would
1:23 you want your fans to turn off they're not that loud in the first place and
1:27 they're just going to turn back on again when can you fire up any kind of
1:31 demanding game or other application anyway get a good pair of noise
1:35 isolating headphones and call it a day well that's where you're partially wrong
1:41 for one thing perceived loudness is dependent on the environment in which
1:45 the PC is being used and personal tolerances to you the ambient noise in
1:50 the room or the other fans in your system might overpower the quiet idle
1:55 noise of the NVIDIA reference or MSI twin frozer or whatever other cool you
2:00 have on your graphics card but for people up late writing for example in a
2:04 quiet room a nice quiet PC can be pretty
2:08 important and as they start replacing fans in their system they quickly get to
2:12 the point where the graphics card fan one that they have is pretty tough to
2:16 replace is the loudest part and to address the whole get headphones
2:22 suggestion I mean not Everyone likes headphones and why should I have to put
2:28 something on my face or just deal with
2:31 it when there is literally no reason my
2:34 computer should be making any noise when I'm playing music for example something
2:39 that's been possible to do on fanless low power portable devices for decades
2:44 at this point which leads us to the guide now normally unless your GPU
2:49 supports fanless operation out of the box your MSI afterburner custom fan
2:54 profile which you can access like this will have these dotted lines on it to
2:58 denote the maximum and minimum values that your fan will operate at you can
3:04 drag the button down to Zer RPM but it won't do anything without the
3:09 modification posted by lays which will summarize but I'm sure he'd also
3:13 appreciate if you check out the link in the video description and post some
3:16 positive comments in the Forum thread if you liked his guide all right so first
3:21 you need to gather the tools you'll need Maxwell BIOS tweaker GPU Z and envy
3:26 flash save your BIOS using GPU Z to a
3:30 folder of your choice in the root of your drive we're going to call it Envy
3:33 flash by pressing this button copy all
3:37 the zipped files from Maxwell BIOS tweaker and envy Flash and blah blah all
3:42 that stuff into the same folder as your backed up BIOS open the BIOS tweaker app
3:47 open BIOS by clicking here and navigating to it it should be pretty
3:51 close by then there's a bunch of stuff that you can tweak in here but most of
3:55 it goes beyond the scope of this guide we're just going to change RPM 11 per 01
4:01 and RPM 01 to zero to change the minimum
4:05 value in RPM and percentage of our fan to zero when that's done save your BIOS
4:11 as some other file name so you retain a
4:14 copy of your original BIOS that you can Flash the card back to so that it's in
4:19 its stock configuration in the event that you ever need to send it in for
4:22 warranty service then go into device manager and disable your graphics card
4:28 don't worry if the screen goes black or does anything funny this is only
4:31 temporary next press Windows and type
4:34 command then right click and open as administrator type in CD space see colon
4:40 back Envy Flash and press enter Then type Envy flash space- 6 space and the
4:47 name of your BIOS. ROM then press enter
4:51 press y wait for the flash process to complete I'd actually highly recommend
4:56 being connected to a battery backup during this time restart reenable your
5:00 graphics card and Device Manager reboot again for good measure then fire up MSI
5:04 afterburner and it's Off to the Races now you can configure your custom fan
5:09 profile however you want so depending on if you just want silence at idle and
5:13 otherwise a pretty normal fan curve or if you want to be able to you know limit
5:18 your gpus load through the use of vsync gsync or some other frame rate limiter
5:22 in-game for example to try and get silent gaming going you'll want to tune
5:26 this differently but this follow-up Post in the Forum from L has a solid looking
5:31 suggested curve that ramps up the fan to keep your GPU safe as it heats up while
5:36 keeping it quiet when nothing's shaken once you've got it dialed in and you
5:41 like the GPU's overall behavior and
5:44 noise level under various loads simply put a value between 10 and 15° into the
5:50 hysteresis box this keeps the fan from
5:53 constantly ramping up and down when the
5:56 temperature is right on the threshold of a of a major RPM shift which can be
6:00 annoying and then you're done so the last things to address in this video are
6:04 these lonus I did this and my GPU is running at like 60 to 65° at idle at the
6:11 desktop is that okay the answer is
6:14 pretty much yeah while lower temperatures are better for electronics
6:18 60° is nowhere near the fast and painful
6:22 death danger zone and if NVIDIA thought that this was bad for it none of these
6:27 cards would feature a fanless mode what about this one then lonus how does
6:32 this affect the warranty of my card well
6:35 if your GPU manufacturer does not allow BIOS flashing under the warranty terms
6:40 my recommendation would be to like I said before flash that backup that you
6:45 saved back onto the card before attempting to get any kind of warranty
6:48 service they can't tell you did it but
6:52 with that said if you were to Brick your card as part of this process the honest
6:56 thing to do would be to suck it up since it's not covered and take better
7:00 precautions like using a battery backup next
7:04 time speaking of taking better precautions crunchy roll is a way to
7:09 take precautions against missing your favorite anime shows it's the anime site
7:14 created by anime fans for anime fans they offer the most current episodes of
7:18 new shows straight from Japan like parasite the maxim and Koko's basketball
7:22 3 with a large collection of the most popular anime series like Naruto and one
7:27 piece and all the content on their site is professionally subtitled so all you
7:31 got to do is head over to crunchyroll.com Linus you can sign up
7:35 for a 30-day free trial of crunchy roll premium which gives you a whole month of
7:40 free anime completely adree then if you
7:43 enjoy the many benefits of Premium you know membership like 1080p streaming
7:48 getting new episodes of shows within an hour of their Premiere and being able to
7:52 stream anywhere from a variety of devices like your phone tablet game
7:56 console um you know your etes sketch
7:59 actually that doesn't work because an edge of sketch doesn't have a network
8:03 connection unless you have like a really great edge of sketch like I I really wonder if that
8:08 would be a successful product like smart etes sketch anyway the point is that
8:12 crunchy roll is only $6.95 a month if you enjoy it so head over to crer
8:16 roll.com Linus to check them out so
