9:28 involving HR involving our hiring involving our our our our content

9:34 involving our overall strategy involving the way that we address things publicly

9:38 like our PR um so she's very much a part of what we do and uh and she's approved

9:43 and like if if people are worried about content control and stuff she's approved

9:48 stuff that was like we were pretty unsure about it yeah

12:03 GPU technology conference they've unveiled some details about their 2016

12:07 Graphics architecture code name oh the name of this G is the Afterparty I'm

12:37 whole lot here that we didn't kind of see coming um up to 16 gab of hbm memory

12:43 is is what it's going to be launching with but it can support up to 32 yes um

12:49 so we're talking one terabyte per second in bandwidth although uh and this will

12:53 be hbm2 by the way so NVIDIA apparently

12:57 just kind of went yep we're going to sit this first generation we're going to

13:01 wait until there's a die shrink and then we are going to pack as many more

13:05 transistors as we can into our GPU and we're going to go hbm at the same time

13:10 and deliver hopefully something really

13:13 really groundbreaking um it'll be the

13:16 GPU Market kind of needs to be completely honest because with VR around

13:20 the corner they're going to be really far behind and it has been we have been

13:24 stuck at the same manufacturing process node for so long long it's a problem

13:30 actually right now it's been awful like they have had to do so many crazy tricks

13:35 both NVIDIA and AMD have been like

13:44 well they've been clever chip design why don't we call it that um but they have

13:49 also revealed that Pascal will be available in multi-GPU packaging Envy

13:54 link is going to enable up to 80 Gigabyte per second communication

13:59 um they're going to they're going to have higher performance through the use

14:02 of the uh oh man why am I having trouble talking today there's hbm2 will help

14:07 from performance there's also a manufacturing no strength that he's talking about 16 nanometer finfet

14:12 process which is still going to be done by

14:15 tsmc um yeah yeah and we're expecting it

14:18 sometime in the first half of 2016 so should be that long stay tuned I wonder

15:32 of the examples of of fair use would be things like reviews where you'll be

15:38 using clips of you know Hollywood movies or AAA games things that would normally

15:44 be well I guess games to a lesser extent but would normally be you know very

15:48 protected no unauthorized reproduction of the blah blah blah Etc fines and jail

15:53 time Etc but for the sake of critique uh

15:57 you know this is how channels that do movie reviews for example are able to

16:02 show what they're actually talking about in the video the point of the video and

16:06 and that's that's what that's what that's what helps them get around uh the

16:10 copyright law the point of the video is not the movie the point of the video is

16:16 their own content that's illustrated by

16:19 them pointing at what they're talking about in the movie

16:22 so with that said there there have been

16:26 some there have been some um some issues

16:31 with uh here there were a couple of couple of examples uh total biscuit I

16:36 believe was one of them unfortunately that didn't make it into that

16:41 unfortunately didn't make it into the notes really okay well unfortunately

16:47 there have been a couple situations where folks that feel like they really

16:50 should be protected by fair use are not

16:53 being and YouTube is offering up to a million dollars to protect them so

16:58 that's that's pretty interesting and it actually comes on the heels for me this

17:03 news um of a really unfortunate

17:06 situation that we ran into this week where we used a classical piece of music

17:11 from the YouTube music library that was

17:15 composed over 50 so it was uh the compo

17:18 the original composer died over 50 years ago making it public domain making the

17:23 actual sheet music itself the composition public domain in the US and

17:27 Canada but um and then the the the

17:31 um uh the the player who actually the recorder who went ahead and and played

17:37 the music and then uh made their made

17:40 their recording of it free for commercial use and all that stuff and

17:44 you know allowed it to be in the YouTube music library said you know yep

17:47 everything's cool with me but International copyright law it turns

17:52 out is a bit of a bear and in Germany

17:56 you have to wait until 70 years after

18:00 the artist passes so it hasn't been 70 years yet so we actually got a letter

18:04 about a video that we uploaded ages ago that's got like a million views now um

18:09 we got a letter saying that we owe $4500 oh my God as a retroactive

18:14 worldwide license for this song because they are the rights holder of the sheet

18:18 music even though in our territory it is not uh it is not protected now this is

18:24 this is one of those situations where I really don't think there's going to be a

18:28 whole lot that going to come of it because this music has been used an

18:33 awful lot over a span of a year and the fact that they're just sitting on it now

18:38 waiting for an opportunity to to go after people like I really don't think

18:42 they're going to be able to Target the potentially tens of thousands of YouTube

18:46 creators who have used that particular composition and extract €4,500 from all

18:51 of them um and there was already a post on Reddit where someone went through the

18:55 same thing whose lawyer advised them not to pay and eventually it the whole thing

18:59 went away um but it really it really

19:02 does it really does bring up an excellent point

19:06 about whose responsibility is what in

19:10 this whole online content creation thing because if YouTube's providing the music

19:14 library which technically they do have a disclaimer on saying you know we're not

19:17 responsible for whatever um but that

19:21 opens up like let's say in all of our 3,000 videos we had used this song we

19:26 could potentially owe you know whatever ever that works out too so

19:30 4500 time 3,000 sorry I'm not that great

19:33 at this is going to be really brutal so we could owe 13 and a half million euros

19:38 potentially um which I don't know how

19:41 much you guys know about how much YouTube channels make but that sure as

19:46 heck ain't it um there's there's a lot of misconceptions there a lot of people

19:51 think we make way more than we do right okay well no in the entire time that

19:56 lonus Media Group has ever existed and for the foreseeable future 13.5 million

20:01 EUR will be Out Of Reach way more yeah

21:41 that story after that's pretty that's pretty funny story um but it's so easy

22:39 it so so we got a copyright strike because a successful dmca takedown had

22:43 been issued for some of our content and

22:46 I was like what and it was like uh uh

22:50 what was it it was one of the um the Silverstone headphone stand design

22:54 contest videos and I was like I I don't even think there was any music in there

22:58 what what is this even what is this even about and so finally because my account

23:03 is so limited and because the video has been pulled down it's hard to find any

23:06 information about it but I finally got to the right page and the claimant was

23:10 lonus Media

23:13 Group so when I dug into it the contact

23:16 email was for Colton so I was like okay that guy who's

23:22 uh whose bio on the site says that he's just not as good at Nick not as good as

23:27 Nick and Nick light so uh apparently he's not as good as Nick at uh filing

23:32 takedowns because he managed to do a takedown on our own damn video which

23:39 okay and this was after I had sent a super iate email to YouTube being like

23:44 hey yo I need my account back right away we've got uploads to do and stuff and

23:49 they're just like um it was issued by you have you

23:53 tried retracting the takedown no I will look into that

24:05 better but we might need to add to that also tries to attack own company yeah

53:47 principles of good design I don't know how else to wreck a company more than

54:00 thing that you could kind of say is well okay A lot has changed since the Apple

54:04 po you need to be able to do more yeah and you need to be able to do more and

54:17 versus you know what specs does it have and you know how many lines of code can

54:22 it show on the screen in you know one color green you know or whatever like

54:32 necessarily go away and there are some very legitimate criticisms here so uh

54:37 they criticize Apple for having no Universal back or undo button this is

54:42 something that I have been hating on for so long and I'll hear people say well no

54:49 and and one of the things I complain about is most of the time according to

54:52 Apple's guidelines it's in the top left and I said well hold on a second Apple

54:56 still hasn't fixed this crap even though they've got big phones that you can't

54:59 reach with one hand anymore and people are like no cuz you can swipe from the

55:03 left sometimes usually even not always

55:08 and inconsistencies that's a huge problem

55:11 huge you need to have the UI work the same way kind of all the time or else

55:16 that's not good another one is what they

55:19 call hidden gesture-based menus and I

55:23 know that there are freaks on Earth you

55:26 heard me Taran freaks who can have

55:30 literally 30 macro buttons on their

55:33 computers and have multiple profiles of

55:37 different sets of macros remember where they are and can actually use them it's

55:41 insane it's amazing like they're not labeled but for most people a lot of the

55:47 gestures that are showing up in iOS are

55:50 going to be ones that they're just plain not going to remember exist I mean

55:53 there's the ones that are really handy like swipe to search uh you swipe up for

55:59 you know being able to turn on the flashlight or disable Wi-Fi but for

56:02 whatever reason not enable portable hot

56:05 spot um but there's but there's ones that are

56:10 just like yeah it's like two fingers to do this and three fingers for that and

56:13 four fingers for this and it's just like who's going to even use this stuff how

56:18 about you just make that functionality accessible in a way that's actually meaningful to me and then the last one

56:23 is pushing visual Simplicity over usability testing

56:26 in the new human interface guidelines that they're publishing for

56:31 developers um to be clear they're not only criticizing Apple for this they're

56:34 also criticizing Google Maps um Google Maps like used to be so easy to use and

56:40 now because I don't use it very often pretty much every time I try to find the

56:44 satellite view I can't find it I'm just for Google Maps yeah yeah just like

56:49 where the crap did they put it

56:57 trying to navigate somewhere with someone who uses Apple Maps is actually

57:04 infuriating cuz it'll just suck the whole time and I'm just like yeah I

57:08 don't mind it it's been really it at least doesn't take me literally 25

57:13 minutes away from where I'm trying to go like Google Maps has done a couple of times really yeah what when I was

57:18 shopping for this place I missed the appointment to see this place the first

57:34 because in Europe no offense to Europeans but the way streets are laid

60:10 people are are in a feast and famine industry yeah so when there's no work

60:15 they're getting paid nothing which means that when they are getting paid they need to be making like so can kind of

60:26 lecture us um to be fair he's pretty good at it if he was a teacher I would
